doslovno znacenje izraza 'to trim the sails' jeste: 'spustiti jedra', 'smotati jedra'.
kada talasi postanu previsoki i cini se da ce se jedrenjak prevrnuti, onda se jedra spustaju, kako bi se smanjio otpor udarcima vjetra i pusta se da talasi nose brodic.

to je doslovno znacenje, a i vasa fraza ukazuje na to.
u prenesenom znacenju - to trim the sails and ride the wave - bi znacilo: prilagoditi se novonastaloj situaciji (saviti jedra jer je pocela bura)i prepustiti da sve ide svojim tokom.

ova fraza nema negativno znacenje, jer cinjenica da su se oni prilagodili situaciji znaci da su ipak pronasli neko rjesenje za sebe.

ljudi koji su nezadovoljni nacinom na koji se razvija njihovo mjesto mogu ili da protestuju, galame, pokusavaju da zaustave promjene ili -da se jednostavno prilagode toj novonastaloj situaciji i cekaju da vide sta ce dalje biti (da talasi prodju)

drugo znacenje izraza 'to trim the sails'jeste: smanjiti troskove, svesti ih na minimum.
U kombinaciji sa 'and ride the wave' moglo bi znaciti:

ne znam o cemu se govori u tekstu (na koji se to nacin razvija njihovo mjesto) pa zato predlazem kao prvo rjesenje 'prilagoditi se novonastaloj situaciji...' jer je to relativno neutralno rjesenje.
