“Comparing Area of Leaves:

Tell the children are to study different sizes of leaves. Go to your preselected plant to model what they will do. Show how to trace a leaf on an overhead transparency.
- Place the leaf between the transparency and a clipboard.
- Trace around the leaf with a transparency pen. This allows the leaf to remain on the plant and lets you keep the outline.

Hold the transparency up for all to see. Point to the space inside the leaf tracing. Ask children if know the mathematical name for the space inside. This is area.”
