Con el contexto disponible, entiendo que se refiere a la "signatura" de un buque, teniendo en cuenta que, con la cantidad (y calidad) de los sensores disponibles (y los que se están investigando) se puede establecer una base de datos (electroópticos, sónicos, ultra e infrasónicos (Sonar), de radar...) que puede permitir la identificación, sea de la clase de buque sea -incluso- de uno individualmente.

La base (para "signatura") fue la que sigue (teniendo en cuenta que "signatura genética" es el término que se usa en genética, con exclusión de firma, y que este es un campo que, precisamente, permite aislar un individuo entre MILLONES:
