I don't get the whole idea. It's about Life magazine, in the 60's. La empresa no escatimaba gastos para lograr las mejores fotografías (aunque a veces se pasaba de la raya).

“Many a” is a correct construction in English, so it’s no mistake. The meaning is basically the same as just “many”.

La idea es que muchos empleados de la revista pagaron los abrigos de visón (de sus esposas o... ) a través de sus notas de gastos, incluyendo gastos no legítimos o poniendo cantidades que no correspondían a los gastos reales. Poco a poco, estas cantidades se van sumando, y así poco a poco (o “pelo a pelo”) se puede “financiar” un abrigo de visón.
