English term

'WHAT'

English Other Other grammar
In the phrase "..., what means that...", is it grammatically correct to use what? Please, do not tell me 'which' would be preferable instead of 'what'. Any other option to replace the 'what' will be welcome.

Give us the complete sentence, if you want a correct answer.
As it stands, you would have to use 'which'
"XXX, which means that YYY...
Can Altinbay Jun 1, 2005:
Well, depending on context, "which" could be correct. :)
Will Matter Jun 1, 2005:
Yes, please give us more to work with.
David Hollywood Jun 1, 2005:

Still wondering. "What" is incorrect, i've tried to think of any way in which "what" might make sense & nothing fits. It's definitely not a question of preference, English has rules just like every other language, some can be dispensed with, some cannot.
agree Can Altinbay : Yes, "what" is incorrect.

"what" is incorrect in this case

Non-native here, meddling...

An alternative would be to use the gerund: "..., meaning that..."
Peer comment(s):

agree Marijke Singer : You could also use ...; this meant that ... as in: He went home at 2; this meant that he missed his appointments.

agree Can Altinbay : You may be non-native, but you are correct.

What does that mean? = Ok.

What is the meaning of that? = so so.

What is your meaning / the meaning of (that) = okay.

What do you mean by that? = Ok, but vernacular
As it is, it sounds like English by way of Chinese, Latvian and Arabic.
