If you Google "a pris l'instruction" (with the quotes), hundreds of examples come up which indicate that this is indeed one of those slightly confusing cases: "take (prendre) an instruction" in French can either mean "issue" or "obey". It's really prendre in the sense of "(deign to) take up... and put in a slot where your minions will deal with it in due course".
