Discussion

liz askew Oct 1, 2013:
No problem! I don't think we'll forget this one..."rabbit droppings"!
Take care:)
Ninon Dion Oct 1, 2013:
Darnit Liz, you're right! I'm sorry, my mind must have switched the times around.
liz askew Oct 1, 2013:
hmmm
Unless I am mistaken, you posted at 6 minutes, and I posted at 5 minutes:)
Ninon Dion Oct 1, 2013:
Strangely, I was the first entering the chosen entry but didn't get a single vote. Oh well.
Carol Gullidge Sep 23, 2013:
jmleger: no need to worry Reading the question, I'm pretty sure that "thrombus hémorroidaire" and "crottes de lapin" are two separate symptoms - i.e., one doesn't describe the other!
jmleger Sep 23, 2013:
The thing is... would a British medical professional resort to the rabbit pellet imagery to describe hemorroids. I don't know, I am not a doctor and I don't play one on TV.
Drmanu49 Sep 23, 2013:
Quite right I will change that.
liz askew Sep 23, 2013:
It doesn't take much to have the English having a bit of a giggle!
liz askew Sep 23, 2013:
@Drmanu49 - your entry clearly says "rabbit like pellet stools", which is somewhat different to "rabbit pellet-like stool"!
Carol has a point, and I think "rabbit-like pellets" would have the English physicians having a bit of a giggle:)
Carol Gullidge Sep 23, 2013:
No doubt it is! And everybody knows exactly what it means. But whether or not you use it depends on the level and accuracy of English you're aiming for.

Pedantic, I know!
Drmanu49 Sep 23, 2013:
rabbit-pellet-like stools is a commonly used term in GE.
Carol Gullidge Sep 23, 2013:
rabbit like unfortunately, strictly speaking, "rabbit like" means "resembling a rabbit". I'm sure none of these stools actually look like rabbits!

rabbit feces /cecal pellets

(hard, round) rabbit feces.
Healthy rabbits produce two types of feces:

· Hard round feces of intestinal origin are rich in small pieces of hay and other debris. They can be seen around or in the litter-box.

· Smelly soft grape-like cecotropes (also called soft cecal pellets) coated with a thin layer of mucus that are produced in the cecum. They are rich in minerals, vitamins, proteins, water, and bacteria. To avoid the loss of these precious nutrients, the rabbit will re-ingest them as soon as they pass the anus, without chewing, to avoid breaking the outer coats of the grains. This enables the continuation of fermentation and the survival of bacteria inside the grains while passing the acid hostile environment of the stomach

scybala

(Sorry, misspelled my first attempt)

Without quotation marks. It's the very name of the things observed, not a description by analogy.

Obscure, but it's in the (unabridged) dictionaries (sing. scybalum).:-)

--------------------------------------------------

I've known this word for 50+ years, but I confess I've never seen it in print anywhere BUT in dictionaries. For that reason, I probably wouldn't use it myself. Too recondite.

If I've prompted ANYONE to go look it up, though, I've had my fun for the day.:-)
