Italian term
fare il punto della situazione
Italian to English
Social Sciences
General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
This non-technical phrase shows up in the instructions for administering the DSST - Digit Symbol Substitution Test - to subjects in a clinical trial.
The complete sentence reads: "Tenga in mano il foglio DSST per *fare il punto della situazione* al paziente e indichi la chiave sopra ogni voce del test e dica al paziente: ... "
I think it has to do with explaining the instructions to the patient/subject, but I need help with a nice way to phrase this in this context. This question has been asked here before (in 2002) but I'm not completely happy with the answers given there.
Grazie per l'aiuto!

to explain the situation
In the context I would just use this. Before seeing the context, I had thought of "to sum up the situation" " to see where we are", but in your context, I think this is sufficient Joseph.

Comment: "Thank you again, Jim."
2 hrs
to bring him up to speed
would also work, though maybe too casual
tell him about the latest developments - fare il punto tends to convey the notion that it is an update

+4
3 hrs
sum things up
colloquial, as you say in your question.

: In this context Jim's solution is ok, but this is the correct translation if it comes to "fare il punto...."
