Giles Watson Apr 14, 2014:
Plateatico The trouble with "plateatico" is that the term is metonymic. In other words, it doesn't refer to the outside tables themselves so much as the local tax that the restaurateur pays to put them there.

Unless you actually have a picture of the eatery, you can't know whether the tables are on decking, a terrace, a patio or set up directly in the street. And even if you did, it's not clear whether the shade comes from overhanging trees or some sort of gazebo, many of which are plastic because that makes them easier to classify as temporary structures for tax purposes. In the absence of any further info, I'd be inclined to go for a prudent solution such as "outside dining area".

I'm sure the customer will have a posted a photo of the place somewhere on the web, though. You could always ask.

research Why not research the word first, before asking questions here. The definition is easy to find online. It is probably faster than posting a question here. http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plateatico

Thank you Lara, that would be my choice as well.
agree Janice Giffin : patio is the best choice since it belongs to the bar/cafe that is serving drinks or sandwiches. A patio is generally private, whereas a plaza is public

shady plaza

it seems to me to be a sort of public "square".
