Кстати, один из магазинов сети Х был открыт недавно в Москве, но через некоторое время его УСПЕШНО ЗАКРЫЛИ - расположение оказалось не благоприятным ...

"Successfully closed" obviously won't do here! Does it simply mean "closed down" or is it more subtle like "sold off"?

Explanation:
The sence of this sentence "in the end, the shop was happily closed after a certain time" - which means an ironically given (and thus skightly selfcontradicting) sense (since, as a rule, shops are someting to be successfully opened!:)).

The subtle underlying meaning is that the store did not live up to expectations, due to bad choice of location.

Согласна с Вашим close down, но решила, что еще вариант не помешает. Встречала эту надпись в американских магазинах: " We are running out of business" - причину,естественно,не указывают,но они могут быть различные.
To run out - a/come to an end(The America Century Dictionary,1999)

В принципе понятно, что авторы имеют в виду- вышли из бизнеса почти безболезненно,\"отделались легким испугом\", не было значительных убытков (если это не ирония, как Вы полагаете). Но, согласитесь, если это даже так, то по аналогии можно сказать: \"этот человек успешно упал с 3-го этажа - только подвернул ногу\". Суть ясна, действительно ему повезло - успех налицо, но ведь форма, в которой выражена правильная мысль - явно неудачная!

Explanation:
There is definitely no misprint :) this expression is sometimes used in Russion it's partially based on the play of words. Сначала предприятие "успешно открывают" а потом "успешно закрывают".

I would put it in this way:

"First ... they managed to (successfully) open XXX shop .., and then they managed to (successfully) close it just as well "

Another possible meaning is just as described in your added note but I'am SURE IT IS NOT THE CASE IN THIS CASE :)
