Cheney schreibt seine Memoiren. Die Nachricht sorgt in Amerika für Aufsehen, denn der Autobiograf ist eigentlich ein großer Schweiger, ein berüchtigter Geheimniskrämer. Einer, der Fragen stellt, schweigend zuhört, Notizen macht, die er sich mitnimmt, nach den vielen Sitzungen im Weißen Haus, im Pentagon, bei der CIA. Der ultimative Insider. Einer, der wenig Wert legt auf Anerkennung beim breiten Publikum.
So jemand schreibt seine Memoiren nicht nur aus Selbstbeweihräucherung. Cheney will ein paar Dinge geraderücken, die in Schieflage geraten sind, so viel lässt er seine Getreuen streuen. Für die Fehlentwicklung macht er George W. Bush verantwortlich, der sich in seiner zweiten Amtszeit als große Enttäuschung erwies, indem er sich seinem Rat entzog. Er zeigte moralische Schwäche, er verkannte, dass der "Krieg gegen den Terror" im Zentrum aller Überlegungen stehen sollte. Ein unverzeihlicher Fehler von historischer Tragweite, den Barack Obama aus Ahnungslosigkeit verlängert, das sagt Cheney seit Monaten auch öffentlich.
Der Krieg gegen den Terror war sein Werk - als Prinzip des Umgangs der Weltmacht mit der Welt nach dem 11. September 2001 und in den beiden Fällen der Anwendung auf die Wirklichkeit. Der Krieg gegen Afghanistan war ein Selbstläufer, ein guter, ein richtiger Krieg, der allerdings nicht zum gewünschten Ergebnis führt, wie Amerika langsam einzusehen beginnt. Den Krieg gegen den Irak hat Cheney unablässig vorangetrieben und die Rechtfertigung manipuliert. Das war der schlechte, der falsche Krieg von Anfang an. Der Krieg gegen Irans Atomanlagen kam nicht zustande, gegen seinen Ratschlag. Nun verteidigt er sein Werk.
Cheney ist ein Getriebener, spätestens seit 9/11. Ihm war es, aus seiner Sicht, seither aufgegeben, sein Land zu erziehen, es auf die tödliche Gefahr einzustimmen, die von Terroristen ausgeht, die sich in den Besitz nuklearer Waffen bringen könnten. Seit den mörderischen Angriffen auf Amerika, die sich zum achten Mal jähren, hat er die "Ein-Prozent-Theorie" entwickelt, die so geht: Falls es nur eine geringe Wahrscheinlichkeit dafür gibt, dass Gefahr von einzelnen Ländern oder Gruppen ausgeht, dann muss Amerika so handeln, als wäre die Bedrohung schon Gewissheit.
Nun ist Cheney politisch kontaminiert, nach allem, was die Welt von ihm weiß. Von seiner Vorliebe für die Entfesselung der Präsidentenmacht, der Manipulation des Geheimdienstes oder seiner Vorliebe für Foltermethoden wie dem Waterboarding. Von seiner Überzeugung, dass Leute wie er weder Fehler noch Irrtümer einräumen sollten und auch gut daran tun, keine Erklärungen für ihr Handeln zu geben - "never apologize, never explain". Er ist der denkbar schlechteste Kronzeuge für seine Doktrin.

He is the ultimate insider -- and someone who places little value on recognition from the general public.
In writing a memoir, a man like this is motivated by more than a high opinion of himself. The little that we know about the memoirs comes from those of his faithful followers who have been given the green light to leak that Cheney is using his memoir to set straight a few things that he thinks have been skewed. He blames the unfortunate turn of events of the past few years on George W. Bush, the man who greatly disappointed him during his second term in office by ignoring his advice. As Cheney reportedly sees it, Bush showed moral weakness and failed to realize that the focus of all considerations needed to stay on the "war on terror." This was an unforgivable error of historic proportions, which -- as Cheney has been saying publicly for months -- Barack Obama is prolonging out of ignorance.
The war on terror was Cheney's idea. Since 9/11, it has guided America's interactions with the rest of the world, and it became a real war in the real world twice. Starting the war in Afghanistan was essentially a political no-brainer; it has been viewed as a good and just war that unfortunately hasn't lead to the desired results, as the US is slowly beginning to realize. Cheney pushed relentlessly for the war on Iraq and manipulated the justifications for military intervention. From the very beginning, this has been a bad war -- and the wrong war. And, although he pushed hard for it, the war on Iran's nuclear facilities has never materialized.
Now he is busy defending his creation. Since 9/11, he has also been a particularly driven man. In his own imagination, he was chosen to educate his country, to make sure that it really understands the deadly peril that will arise if terrorists get their hands on nuclear weapons. Since the murderous attacks on America eight years ago, he has developed a 'one percent' theory that goes like this: If there is even a remote possibility that individual countries or groups could pose a danger, the US must act as if this threat were already firmly established.
Today, now that the world knows so much about him, Cheney is a political leper. They know about his fondness for expanding presidential powers, the joy he takes in manipulating intelligence agencies and his support for using methods of torture like waterboarding. They know that Cheney is convinced that people like him should never admit errors or mistakes and believes that such people would be wise to give no explanations for their actions. "Never apologize," he says. "Never Explain." It's seems rather strange, then, that Cheney is writing this memoir.

"Inhaftiert" beschreibt das Leben hinter Gittern in einem ostdeutschen Gefängnis zur Zeit des Kalten Krieges. Die Berliner Fotografin Franziska Vu nähert sich dem Thema aus zwei Richtungen. Durch die Linse ihrer Kamera betrachtet, nimmt sie uns mit auf eine fotografische Führung durch das Gebäude. Wir erleben die Machtlosigkeit, die Angst und die Einsamkeit, die die Gefangenen empfunden haben, aber auch Hoffnungsschimmer, gesehen durch die Augen der Künstlerin. Interviews, die Franziska Vu mit ehemaligen Gefangenen führte, helfen uns dabei die visuellen Eindrücke mit realen Lebensgeschichten zu verbinden und verleihen den damals hinter dicken Mauern Totgeschwiegenen eine Stimme. "Detained" examines what life was like behind bars in an East German jail, at the height of the Cold War. Berlin photographer Franziska Vu has taken a dual approach to this topic. Looking through the eye of her lens, she has created a photographic tour of the premises – an artist's view of the powerlessness, fear, and isolation, but also the hope experienced by prisoners. At the same time, Vu has also conducted interviews with former inmates to link these visual impressions with eyewitness accounts and give a voice to those who were silenced behind these concrete walls. By combining photographic art with real-life experiences and merging artistic expression with political issues, she has created a powerful exhibition that compels us to reflect on recent German history and the country's efforts to come to terms with its past.

Det er en dag som ingen anden, en helt speciel forventning hviler over byen allerede fra morgenstunden. I dag kommer Princess til byen. Ikke alene fylder det gigantiske skib hele horisonten, og får vore egne skibe og både til at ligne miniature-legetøj, men byens befolkningstal bliver også for en stund fordoblet. Ikke sært at en sådan dag skaber forventning og glæde. Hele byen rykker sammen om at gøre anløbet til en succes. En succes for skibets gæster, for rederiet – men i lige så høj grad en succes for byen selv. Og netop denne blanding er dét som gør et Princess anløb i Sydgrønland så specielt.

It’s a day not like any other, and there has been a special sense of anticipation in the air since early this morning. Today, a Princess is coming to town. Not only does the gigantic ship fill up the horizon, it also makes our own ships and boats look like playthings in comparison – and briefly doubles the number of inhabitants here. No wonder a day like today generates delight and enthusiasm. The whole community has pulled together to make this visit a success. And it’s precisely this constellation that makes it so special when a Princess anchors in South Greenland.

The magic of the Internet makes it all possible
After paying my dues as a subtitler in Paris and a TV producer & translator in Berlin, my German wife and I packed up our belongings in 2001 and headed for the breathtaking wilderness of the Arctic, where we can contemplate the icebergs drifting by our office window. I can't think of a more inspiring place to juggle verbs and adjectives or ponder the best translation of "Vollstreckungsunterwerfungsklausel". Thanks to the magic of the Internet, I can live on top of the world, yet remain in close contact with clients. We've never regretted the move.
Translator in Greenland
In addition to being the only translator you will probably ever meet who lives in Greenland, I'm a stickler for accuracy, always searching for "le mot juste." For the past 25 years, I've worked in journalism, advertising and public relations. I do translations in a wide range of fields, including art, architecture, Holocaust research (oy vey!) … and slightly more exotic areas like raspberry cultivation techniques and ergonomic footwear.
Connected, living on high ground and ready for winter
Now that we've finally sold off the igloo (the damn roof leaked) and moved into an office with central heating and broadband Internet access, we're totally connected and linked with the outside world. Skype also allows us to place inexpensive calls, making it even easier to work for customers and keep in touch with colleagues thousands of kilometers away from the frozen wastes. The world is getting smaller, the ice cap is rapidly melting, the office is on high ground and the freezer is filled with chunks of blubber.
