Erstgenannte waren sehr hübsche Wesen, mit denen ich gerne Freundschaft geschlossen hätte. Allerdings führte bereits der zaghafteste Versuch der Annäherung zur sofortigen Flucht der Tiere. Die Kühe fand ich weniger interessant. Vor allem in der Nähe von Kälbern befindliche Bullen machten auf mich mit ihren spitzen Hörnern einen doch eher gefährlichen Eindruck. Hinzu kam, dass einige von ihnen genau auf meinem Wanderweg standen. Als Krone der Schöpfung wollte ich nicht ewige Umwege gehen, nur um ihnen auszuweichen. In einem Youtube-Video hatte ich einmal gesehen, wie jemand brüllend mit hochgerissenen Händen auf einen Elch zugegangen ist und ihn dadurch verscheucht hatte. Ich dachte mir, was bei Elchen geht, das muss auch bei Rindern funktionieren. Meine ersten Opfer waren allein stehende Kühe. Zunächst ließen sie sich nicht von meiner gespielten Dominanz beeindrucken. Erst als ich etwa 1,5-2m vor ihnen stand, ergriffen sie wie von der Tarantel gestochen die Flucht. Schritt für Schritt traute ich mich an gefährlicher wirkende Exemplare heran, bis ich die Sicherheit erlangte, dass der Trick wirklich funktioniert. Schnurstracks konnte ich daher meinen geplanten Biwakpunkt ansteuern und habe diesen nach insgesamt fünf Stunden wie vorgesehen erreicht.
Da ich mittlerweile ziemlichen Hunger hatte, wollte ich mir zunächst etwas kochen, bevor es an den Aufbau des Nachtlagers ging. Auf dem Menü stand Reis mit Pilzcremesuppe. Das neue gekauft Piezo-Gasfeuerzeug, von dessen Funktion ich mich vor Abfahrt überzeugt hatte, funktionierte nun auf einmal allenfalls zufällig. Nach zig dutzendmal Drücken ließ sich ihm doch noch ein Funken zum Zünden des Gaskochers entlocken. Da ich mittlerweile großen Hunger hatte, war die Vorfreude auf das warme Essen riesig. Das sehnliche Erwarten schlug nach und nach in Frust um. Selbst nach einer halben Stunde war der Reis immer noch recht hart. Zu Hause ging das mit der Zubereitung irgendwie immer schneller. Da ich keine Lust auf weiteres Warten hatte, gab ich das Suppenpulver oben drauf und schlürfte die schleimige aber knusprige Kost gierig herunter.
Bis zum Sonnenuntergang waren es noch ca. 1,5 Stunden. Inmitten von Büschen fand ich einen idealen Zeltplatz. Hier brauchte ich nicht zu befürchten, dass mich nachts umher irrende Kühe versehentlich treten oder mir eine Tellermine vor das Zelt legen würden. Kaum hatte ich das Innenzelt ausgepackt, stellte ich bei näherer Betrachtung fest, dass dieses über Tunnel für die Aufnahme von zwei (separaten) Stangen verfügte. Im Zubehör war jedoch nur eine lange Stange enthalten. Nach längerem Ausprobieren war klar, dass Zelt und Stange nicht zusammenpassten. Zudem war die Stange zu kurz, um sie in zwei Stücke für jeweils einen Tunnel aufzuteilen. Das Zelt war von keinem Nutzen, da nicht aufbaubar. War es vorher noch der Hunger, der meinen Magen quälte, war es nun die Wut, die ihn jetzt fast schmerzend zum Schäumen brachte. Wie konnte die Agentur nur so leichtsinnig sein und mir trotz versprochener Überprüfung ungeeignetes Material mitgeben? Nach 10 Minuten voller Groll holte mich die Realität wieder auf den Boden der Tatsachen zurück. Der Rückweg war ausgeschlossen, da schon bald die Sonne untergehen würde. Zwar hatte ich eine Stirnlampe, hätte mit dieser jedoch nicht Sumpf- von Trockensteppe unterscheiden können. Somit war ich gezwungen, eine Lösung zu finden.

I didn’t need to be afraid there of errant cows accidentally stepping on me during the night or of a mine being in front of the tent. I had hardly unpacked the inner tent when I realized by looking closer that the inner tent required two separate poles. But there was only one long pole in the parts. After trying it out for a long time, it was clear that the tent and pole didn’t work together. The pole was too short to break it into two pieces. The tent was useless as I couldn’t set it up. Hunger had my stomach churning before but now it was almost painfully seething with rage. How could the agency be so careless and give me parts that had nothing to do with the tent despite promising to check? After ten minutes of total anger reality brought me back to Earth. Cientistas da University of Leeds, na Grã-Bretanha, e da Universidade de Agricultura e Tecnologia de Tóquio, no Japão, estão fazendo experimentos com micróbios que se alimentam de ferro.
Uma vez ingerido pelos micróbios, o ferro é transformado em pequenos ímãs, semelhantes aos que são encontrados em discos rígidos de computadores.
De acordo com os pesquisadores, a pesquisa, que foi divulgada na publicação científica Small, pode permitir a fabricação de discos rígidos muito mais rápidos.
Desafio em escala nano
As bactérias Magnetospirilllum magneticum, utilizadas na pesquisa, são micro-organismos naturalmente magnéticos, que costumam viver em ambientes aquáticos em regiões abaixo da superfície, onde o oxigênio é escasso.
Eles nadam para cima e para baixo, seguindo as linhas dos campos magnéticos da Terra e se alinhando aos campos magnéticos como as agulhas de uma bússola, em busca de suas concentrações preferidas de oxigênio.
Quando a bactéria ingere ferro, proteínas dentro de seu corpo interagem com o metal para produzir pequenos cristais do mineral magnetita, o mais magnético existente na Terra.

"We are quickly exhausting the limits of traditionally manufactured technology in regard to smaller components." said the coordinator of the study, Sarah Staniland, from the University of Leeds.
"Machines that are traditionally used to construct them are too clumsy on such a small scale. Nature offers us the perfect tool for this problem." she says.
Biological Wiring
Besides using micro-organisms to make magnets, the researchers also were able to create electrical wires made of living organisms.
The created nano-tubes made from the membranes of artificial cells grown in a controlled environment, with the help of a protein present in human fat molecules.
The membrane is a biological wall that separated the interior of the cell from the outside environment. These tubes could be used in the future as microscopic wiring for genetic engineering as they are capable of transmitting information just like our cells do in our bodies but in a computer, the scientist Masayoshi Tanaka from the University of Agriculture and Technology of Tokyo explained to the BBC.
"This bio-wiring could have electrical resistance and transmit information from one group of cells inside a bio-computer to all the other cells."

A menina já nascera diferente, resultado talvez de alteração genética que a Ciência ainda não explica, ou, quem é que sabe? Um enigma que somente pela fé se pode decifrar. Espírito de luz de volta ao planeta, energia um dia desfeita e agora refeita sem perda da grandeza de gerações passadas. Assim queria a avó eclética, misturando crença e meia-ciência.
Pequenina, já indaga sobre os seres do universo. E extrapola: se olha uma estrela, vê galáxias. Na areia da ampulheta, vê desertos, o desfilar de camelos no ondulado das areias, oásis, tâmaras ao sol, beduínos...O comum é incabível na sua pequenina mente privilegiada.
A vida transcorre sem pressa, o tempo flui preguiçoso, quase só presente, sem antes, sem depois, entre descobertas, o gato e as bonecas, a tristeza inexistindo. Gato gordo que ronrona felicidade à sombra das mangueiras, ouvindo silencioso as histórias da menina, sempre divagando, perguntando, mas os olhos felinos são dois faróis baixíssimos, se perdem entre as palavras e o sono irresistível... São tantas as perguntas sem respostas... Vê a lagarta virando borboleta, a nuvem se tornando chuva... E vê um dia o avô enregelado partindo para sempre... Quer explicações. Mas vive agora apenas com a quase calada avó e o gato na casa imensa entre o jardim e as árvores do pomar...
Um dia, a menina vai à praça. O vento, ou a estrela, ou a coruja com quem conversa à noite, talvez o avô em sonhos, ou a entristecida avó entre orações, o certo é que ouvira falar sobre o homem humilde que afirmava saber nada, mas tudo descobria através de indagações. Leva uma rosa, colhida ainda com o orvalho da manhã. Um presente. Quer saber sobre o avô, sobre a chuva e as lagartas.
Faz perguntas ao homem rodeado de gente na praça da cidade. Que parece de partida. Estranhamente, algumas pessoas choram. Tem uma taça na mão. Diz se chamar Sócrates. E, como ele, é filósofo, ama a sabedoria, busca a verdade. Desfolha na taça a rosa da menina, a olha pensativo, meneando a cabeça,
- Houve um tempo, faz tempo, em que pensei que alguma coisa eu soubesse. Hoje, só sei que nada sei. Procura conhecer a ti mesma.
E sorrindo, mastiga as pétalas da rosa, que ele chama de cicuta...
- É psicótico... Porém inofensivo... Assim falava o homem todo vestido de branco. São ainda inexplicáveis os caminhos que levam à loucura... Mas tem algo de santo, de iluminado, como aquele outro, morrendo em nome do Saber...
Lentamente, o tempo ganha algum passado, o gato gordo já não dorme à sombra das mangueiras, a avó o enterrara no jardim, onde crescem agora margaridas brancas, mas com ele a descuidada avó enterrara também a alegria da menina, a vida se impregnando de saudade... Está em algum outro lugar, afirma ela, querendo consolar, muitos são os caminhos do Senhor... Palavras de difícil entendimento. Debalde a menina perscruta o céu entre as galáxias... Debalde procura na ampulheta, no deserto, entre camelos, no oásis, nas tamareiras, junto aos beduínos... O gato não está em canto algum.
Então ouve falar do outro homem, um professor ensinando na escola da colina, os discípulos sempre interessados. Vai até ele, leva o presente, outra rosa orvalhada, fala da chuva, da lagarta, do avô, do gato e da procura, e de não saber como conhecer a si mesma...
- As mesmas leis regem o suceder das estações, da noite e do dia, do calor e do frio, da tempestade e da bonança... Também os seres vivos, gatos e humanos incluídos. Um determinismo de que ninguém escapa. A Natureza se transforma. Sempre. O processo é eterno. O gato se transformou em margaridas...
A menina não alcança o entendimento completo das palavras, por mais que se esforce, ainda não se conhece bem, há que melhorar como aconselhara o outro, aquele Sócrates que mastigara sua rosa chamando-a de cicuta. Mas sorriem todos para ela, conta mais sobre o gato gordo que ouvia suas histórias cochilando sob a mangueira, ganha palmas dos alunos... O professor a leva para casa, agora interessado, vê as margaridas, a avó, pensa no gato e na enterrada alegria da menina. Vai voltar, promete.
Mas a avó já lhe fala de outro homem, o que curava cegos e ressuscitava mortos, bastava ler o livro sagrado, ali o encontraria em seus ensinamentos, mas o homem encontrado na leitura embora ame os pequeninos como ela, tem um reino que não é deste mundo, talvez por isso nada encontre sobre o avô, nem sobre o gato gordo enterrado pela avó e brotado em margaridas...
É domingo, o tempo ganhara mais passado, as mangueiras se cobriram de frutos amarelos, lagartas são agora borboletas aos pares no jardim... O professor da colina está de volta, conversa com a menina, conta a história do gato gordo, o dela, que gostava das gatas bonitas dos vizinhos, ia lá namorar nas noites enluaradas, e fazer filhinhos. Todos os seres vivos deste mundo se transformam, sim, chegando a vez de cada um, como acontecera com o gato se transformando em margaridas, depois que a avó o enterrara no jardim. Mas os filhinhos, agora desprotegidos, precisam de ajuda. Um cão enorme na vizinhança late ferozmente à noite, fazendo-os tremer de medo. E o vento da madrugada traz muito frio. It is a puzzle that only faith can solve, the Spirit of light coming to the Earth, energy that is dissolved and reconstituted over and over without losing the grandeur of past generations. That is how her eclectic grandmother whose views were half-science and half-faith wanted it.
Just a little girl but she already asks questions about the universe and extrapolates: If she looks at a star, she sees galaxies, sand in an hourglass - deserts, a convoy of camels amongst sand dunes - an oasis, dates in the sun - Bedouins… Everyday things are just not enough for her privileged little mind.
Life goes on without any hurry, time flows lazily, almost only in the present, no before or after between discoveries, her cat and her dolls, no sadness whatsoever. The fat cat purrs happily in the shadow of the mango trees, listening silently to the girl’s stories which are always questioning, asking, but the feline’s eyes are two small lights that become lost amongst all of the words and irresistible sleep… So many questions without answers… She sees a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, a cloud beginning to rain… And she sees her grandfather frozen and leaving forever… She wants answers but lives with her almost silent grandmother in an immense house between a garden and an orchard.
One day she goes to the square. The wind, or the star, or the owl with which she speaks at night, maybe her grandfather in her dreams, or her sad grandmother between sentences, what is certain is that she had heard about the humble man that assured he knew nothing but that could discover anything by questioning. She brings a rose, picked as dew still covered it. A gift. She wants to know about her grandfather, about the rain and about caterpillars.
She questions the man who is surrounded by people in the city square, the whole thing almost looking like a farewell gathering. Strangely, some people are crying. He has a cup in his hand. He calls himself Socrates. And, as he is a philosopher and loves wisdom; he looks for the truth. He takes the petals off the rose and drops them in the cup, looking at the girl and shaking his head.
“There was a time, long ago, when I thought that I knew things. Now, I know that I know nothing. Seek to know yourself.” And laughing, he chews the rose petals which he calls hemlock…
“It’s psychotic… But inoffensive…” So spoke the man dressed in white. “The paths to insanity are unexplainable…. But they are saintly, in a way, enlightened as the One who dies in the name of knowledge…”
Slowly, time begins to gain ground; the fat cat no longer sleeps in the shadow of the mango trees, the grandmother having buried him in the garden where white daisies now grow. However, the careless grandmother also buried the girl’s happiness with him, filling her life with longing… He is in some other place, she assures herself, making some attempt to remedy the sadness, the actions of God are complicated… Such words are difficult to understand. In vain, the girl examines the sky between galaxies. In vain, the girl looks into the hourglass, into the desert, at the camels, the oasis, the dates, together with the Bedouins… The cat is nowhere to be found.
Then she hears of another man, a professor that teaches at the school on the hill to students who are always interested. She goes to him, bringing the gift, another rose moist with dew. She speaks about the rain, the caterpillar, her grandfather and the cat she seeks and of not knowing how to know herself.
“The same laws reign over the seasons, night and day, hot and cold, storms and the calm… Over living beings, cats and humans alike. A fact that nothing can escape from. Nature changes. Always. It is an eternal process. Your cat became daisies…”
The girl cannot fully comprehend the words. As much as she tries; she still does not know herself well. She must try harder, however, as the other man had advised, Socrates that chewed rose petals, calling them hemlock. But all smile to her as she tells more about her fat cat that listened to her stories while napping under the mango trees. The students congratulate her for her story. The professor takes her to her house, interested in the story, and sees the daisies, the grandmother and thinks about the girl’s buried cat and buried happiness. He will come back, he promises.
But her grandmother already is talking about another man who cured the blind and brought the dead back to life. Reading the sacred book would work; there she could find his teachings. The man that she found in the texts, however, loves the humble like her and has a kingdom that is not of this world. For this reason, maybe, she learns nothing about her grandfather or her fat cat that was buried by her grandmother and that now helps daisies grow…
It is Sunday, time has gained more ground recently and the mango trees are covered by yellow fruit, caterpillars are now butterflies mating in the garden… The professor from the hill is back. He talks with the girl and she tells him about her fat cat that liked the neighbors’ cats and that went to court them on moon-lit nights to cast his seed. All living beings of this world change, yes, every one of them, just like the cat that changed into daisies after her grandmother buried him in the garden. But the kittens, now unprotected, need help. An enormous dog barks fiercely at night, frightening them. And the dawn wind carries the harsh cold with it. They need the hands of a girl for their fur, to tell them stories like those she told the fat cat. That is why the professor is there, to offer her the kittens…

En este capítulo se analiza la actualidad y perspectivas de la oferta y
la demanda de gas natural en Colombia. Asimismo, se presenta el marco
jurídico y regulatorio. El objetivo es clarificar las posibilidades físicas,
técnicas y económicas de obtener excedentes que podrían exportarse hacia
el Istmo Centroamericano.
A. Oferta
La geología del país permite establecer un amplio potencial de
hidrocarburos. Para convertirlo en reservas explotables se requiere
incrementar la exploración y la producción. Para ello resulta crucial el
desarrollo de los campos tanto de la Costa Atlántica como del Interior. En
el primer caso se trata de yacimientos localizados en La Guajira y aquellos
que resulten de las actividades exploratorias ya iniciadas en la plataforma
continental. En el segundo caso, se refiere a los campos de los Llanos
Orientales, que cuentan con reservas ya probadas y cuyo aprovechamiento
requiere de inversiones en plantas de tratamiento del gas.
1. Recursos y reservas
Colombia dispone de un importante potencial de hidrocarburos aún
inexplorado. De 13 cuencas potencialmente productoras, 6 han sido objeto
de actividad petrolera y representan el 10% del área sedimentaria (véase el
mapa 1). Las reservas probadas de gas natural se estiman en 6.8 Tpc
(véase el cuadro 1). El potencial es casi tres veces más importante, pues
alcanza los 18.7 Tpc.

In this chapter, an analysis of the current perspectives for the supply and demand of natural gas in Colombia will be conducted, including the present regulatory and legal framework. Its aim is to clarify the physical, technical and economic potential of exporting excess production capacity to Central America.
A. Supply
The country’s geology allows for the development of a wide variety of hydrocarbons. To establish exploitable reserves, an increase in exploration and production is necessary. For this, it is crucial to develop fields along the Atlantic coast as well as in the interior. The first case deals with deposits found in La Guajira and those resulting from the exploration work that has already begun on the continental shelf. The second case refers to fields in the Eastern Plains which have proven reserves whose exploitation requires investment in gas treatment plants.
1. Resources and Reserves
Colombia has significant hydrocarbon potential yet to be explored. Of 13 possibly productive basins, 6 have been the focus of oil production and represent 10% of the sedimentary area (see map 1). Proven reserves are estimated to be 6.8 trillion Cft (see table 1). The possible amount is three times greater, reaching 18.7 trillion Cft.

From a geographic perspective, proven reserves are located in two large regional blocks: the Atlantic coast and the interior of the country. The first consists mainly of free gas while the second has predominantly associated gas. The Atlantic coast makes up 44.4% of proven reserves, its main fields being Chuchupa and Ballena, located off the coast of Guajira and Güejape (Lower Magdalena Valley). The interior contributes to 55.6% from the deposits in the Eastern Plains (Cusiana, Cupiagua, Pauto, Floreña and Volcanera), the Middle Magdalena Valley (Opón, Payoa, Provincia and others) and the Upper Magalena Valley (see table two). La Guajira and the Eastern Plains are the most important regions as they contain 44% and 50%, respectively, of the total.

Laut einer WWF-Studie wird die Natur so stark beansprucht, dass eigentlich 1,5 Erden nötig wären, um den Ressourcenbedarf nachhaltig zu decken. Die Folgen für die Lebensräume von Tieren und Pflanzen sind dramatisch.
Berlin - Der weltweite Raubbau an der Natur nimmt nach einer neuen Untersuchung der Umweltschutzorganisation WWF immer dramatischere Formen an. Die Menschheit beanspruche die globalen Ökosysteme inzwischen derart, dass sie rechnerisch die Kapazität von 1,5 Erden bräuchte, um ihren Bedarf wirklich nachhaltig decken zu können, erklärte der WWF am Montag in Berlin unter Berufung auf eine Studie zum sogenannten ökologischen Fußabdruck. Setze sich der Trend fort, beanspruche die Menschheit bis 2030 doppelt so viel Kapazität, wie die Erde eigentlich bereitstellen könne. 2050 wären es sogar fast dreimal so viele.
Der ökologische Fußabdruck ist eine Messgröße, die veranschaulichen soll, wie die Menschheit, einzelne Länder oder Individuen die natürlichen Ressourcen und die Regenerationsfähigkeit der Ökosysteme beanspruchen. Sie wird in der Einheit globaler Hektar (Gha) angegeben. Ein Abdruck gibt an, wie viel Fläche und damit Biokapazität für einen Lebensstil benötigt wird. Dabei geht es um den Platz für Siedlungen und Nahrungsproduktion, aber auch um die Fläche, die nötig wäre, um den Ausstoß des Treibhausgases CO2 natürlich zu binden.
Nach WWF-Angaben hat sich der ökologische Fußabdruck der Menschheit seit 1966 verdoppelt und wächst weiter. Derzeit beträgt er 18 Milliarden globale Hektar. Umgerechnet auf einen Menschen sind das 2,7 Globale Hektar (Gha). Die Kapazität des Planeten unter der Maßgabe einer natürlichen Regeneration liegt demnach aber bei nur zwölf Milliarden Gha oder 1,8 Gha/Person. "Damit verbraucht die Menschheit 1,5-mal so viel natürliche Ressourcen wie sie sich jährlich erneuern", erklärte der WWF. Das sei in der Gesamtrechnung vor allem der hohen CO2-Emissionen geschuldet.
Einwohner wohlhabender Staaten haben aufgrund ihres Lebensstils und der weit entwickelten Wirtschaft ihrer Länder einen wesentlich größeren ökologischen Fußabdruck als Menschen aus Entwicklungsländern. Die zehn Länder mit dem größten Abdruck pro Kopf sind dem WWF zufolge Katar, Kuwait, die Vereinten Arabischen Emirate, Dänemark, die USA, Belgien, Australien, Kanada, die Niederlande und Irland. Deutschland liegt auf Platz 30. Hätten alle Menschen den Umweltverbrauch eines Deutschen, wären 2,5 Erden zur Bedarfsdeckung nötig, im Fall der USA wären es fünf.
Wirbeltiere in Gefahr
In seiner Studie mit dem Titel "Living Planet Report" schlägt der WWF auch wegen des fortschreitenden Artensterbens Alarm. Weltweit sei die Artenvielfalt seit 1970 um 30 Prozent zurückgegangen, in tropischen Regionen durchschnittlich sogar um 60 Prozent, teilte die Organisation unter Berufung auf einen von ihr zu diesem Zweck erhobenen Index mit.
Besonders dramatisch ist die Situation bei den Wirbeltieren. Die Zahl der Tiger (Panthera tigris) ist seit 1980 um 70 Prozent zurückgegangen. Heute gibt es weltweit noch 3000 bis 3500 frei lebende Exemplare. Besonders bedroht sind die Tiere auf Sumatra und in Malaysia. Grund: Wilderei, weniger Beutetiere und Abholzung der Wälder.
Ähnlich bedroht sind die Flussdelfine, die im Amazonas, aber auch im Ganges, Mekong oder Jangtse leben. Mit Ausnahme des Indus-Delfins, der offenbar von einem Fangverbot profitiert, schrumpfen die Bestände seit Jahrzehnten rapide. Immer mehr Dämme, Überfischung, Umweltverschmutzung sind Gründe dafür, dass der Baiji-Flussdelfin in China nun als ausgestorben gilt.
Bekanntestes Opfer der Überfischung im Atlantik ist der Kabeljau: In den vergangenen 50 Jahren gingen seine Bestände um 74 Prozent zurück. Die stärksten Verluste gab es im Nordwest-Atlantik. Vor Schottland leben kaum mehr als drei Prozent der Menge, die dort vor der industriellen Fischerei zu finden waren.
Der Bestand des im Südatlantik beheimateten Wanderalbatroses ist seit 1972 stark zurückgegangen: Für die Halbierung seiner Bestände sei vermutlich vor allem die Langleinen-Fischerei verantwortlich, in deren Ausrüstung sich die Vögel fatal verfangen.
Der WWF zählt rund 30 Arten auf, die endgültig komplett oder in der Natur ausgestorben sind - darunter das Java-Nashorn (Vietnam), dessen letztes Exemplar 2011 von einem Wilderer erlegt wurde, die in Costa Rica vorkommende Goldkröte, chinesische Weißhandgibbons oder der Waldrons Roter Stummelaffe (Ghana/Elfenbeinküste). Die tatsächliche Zahl ausgestorbener Arten ist jedoch wesentlich größer, da mit gut zwei Millionen nur ein Bruchteil der Gesamtartenzahl bekannt ist, die auf bis zu 100 Millionen geschätzt wird.

The environment is under so much pressure, according to a WWF-Study, that 1.5 Earths would be necessary to continue to supply our present resource needs. The consequences for animal and plant habitats are dramatic.
Berlin - The worldwide over exploitation of the environment, according to research from the environmental protection organization WWF, is taking place in increasingly dramatic ways. Humanity's pressure on the global ecosystem such that it would need the capacity of 1.5 Earths to sustain its resource use, explained the WWF on Monday in Berlin in reference to the so called ecological footprint. If such trends continue, humanity would need double the capacity of the Earth by 2030. In 2050, it would need three times as much.
The ecological footprint is a measurement that is supposed to illustrate how humanity, individual countries or people, use the environment. It is determined in global hectares (gha). One point that is made is the amount of surface area and bio-capacity that is needed for different lifestyles. It measures the amount of space for planting and cultivation but also the surface area of the planet necessary to naturally displace the greenhouse gas C02.
According to the WWF data, the ecological footprint of humanity has doubled since 1966 and continues to grow. Presently, the footprint is 18 billion hectares. Divided among all of humanity, it is 2.7 global hectares (gha) per person. The sustainable capacity of the planet is around 12 billion gha. or 1.8 gha/person. "That means humanity is using 1.5 times more natural resources than can be renewed annually." explained the WWF. Overall, that is to blame on the high CO2 emissions.
The citizens of well-off nations have a much larger ecological footprint due to their lifestyles than people from developing countries. The ten countries with the largest footprint per capita are Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Denmark, the USA, Belgium, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Ireland. Germany is the 30th. If everyone lived like Germans, 2.5 Earths would be necessary to sustain our resource use, 5 Earths in the case of the USA.
Vertebrates in Danger
In its study with the title "Living Planet Report" the WWF raises alarm about continuing species extinctions. Worldwide, the diversity of species has declined 30% since 1970, in tropical regions the average is even close to 60%, commented the organization in reference to their species index.
Especially dramatic is the situation for vertebrates. The number of tigers (Panthera tigris) has declined by 70% since 1980. Today, there are 3,000 to 3,500 wild tigers remaining. The most threatened are those in Sumatra and Malaysia. Reasons: Poaching, less prey and deforestation.
Similarly, river dolphins of the Amazon, Ganges, Mekong and Yangtze rivers are threatened. With the exception of the Indus dolphins, which benefit from a clear ban on hunting, the numbers are rapidly shrinking. More and more damns, over fishing and pollution are reasons for the extinction of the Baiji river dolphin.
A well-known victim of over fishing in the Atlantic is the cod: In the last 50 years, their numbers have decreased by 74%. The worst case is that of the northwest Atlantic. Hardly 3% of the fish to be found near Scotland before industrial fishing remain.
The numbers of the south Atlantic albatross have decreased significantly since 1972: The halving of their population is due presumably to long line fishing in which the equipment fatally traps them.
The WWF counts around 30 species which are definitely extinct either in the wild or completely, among them the rhino of Java (Vietnam), the last one having been killed by a poacher in 2011, the soon extinct golden turtle of Costa Rica, Chinese white-handed gibbon, or the Waldron red colobus (Ghana/Ivory Coast). The actual number of extinct species is much larger given that only a small portion of the total of 100 million species is known.

Los procesos de transnacionalización en las migraciones son propiciados por la búsqueda del bienestar familiar e incluso de las comunidades de origen. Las prácticas transnacionales son realizadas desde distintos ámbitos y con la participación de diversos agentes. La familia es el primer agente de transnacionalización; los proyectos migratorios surgen de estrategias familiares que buscan la movilidad social o supervivencia cotidiana. Por tanto, es la familia la que respalda la decisión individual de uno de sus miembros. De ahí que exista una constante necesidad de mantener un contacto mutuo, facilitado por los medios de comunicación mejorados y abaratados. Por otra parte, la economía se constituye como un potente ámbito transnacional. Hay autores que afirman que, con la globalización, el flujo de información es más inmediato y con ella los modelos de consumo y modos de vida. Así las personas tienden a desplazarse allí donde se mueven capital, trabajo y beneficios económicos superiores a los que ofrecen sus países. Junto a la familia y la economía, coexisten actores importantes que allanan y dinamizan los espacios transnacionales. Las asociaciones de migrantes fungen como puente entre un país y otro.
Los clubes de oriundos o Hometown Associations (HTA’s por sus siglas en inglés), constituyen una herramienta para mantener los hábitos y costumbres del colectivo migrante que los integra. Asimismo, estas organizaciones son un espacio en donde los migrantes organizados pueden cuestionar o demandar al gobierno sobre el estado de abandono de sus comunidades, así como mejoras y cambio sociopolítico de sus lugares de origen. Es importante destacar que, el trabajo de la HTA’s es voluntario y, por tanto a pesar del trabajo y el liderazgo que han alcanzado estas organizaciones, no se puede exigir más allá de las posibilidades de cada organización y estructura humana. Con todo, continúan siendo una minoría los migrantes que conocen y se afilian a este tipo de organización. El incremento de la visibilidad de estas organizaciones en Estados Unidos, es el resultado de una larga tradición de actividades filantrópicas transnacionales, más que por su tamaño o su capacidad organizativa de cara a proyectos políticos, sociales y económicos. En la mayoría de los casos, los líderes de las HTA’s trabajan de manera solitaria y no consiguen formar cuadros que puedan sustituirlos o apoyarlos, lo que repercute negativamente en el desarrollo y crecimiento de la organización. Por tanto, la posibilidad de recibir recursos de agentes externos, más que ayudarles los pone en problemas al no poder ejecutarlos en forma y tiempo (Escala y Rodríguez 2011).
Estas asociaciones proliferaron en la década de los 80, sobretodo en áreas metropolitanas, y a partir de fines de los 90 son organizaciones formadas sobre todo por mexicanos y centroamericanos. La mayoría se inició con redes informales que tenían como objetivo juntar a los paisanos para celebrar fiestas nacionales o religiosas, organizar equipos de fútbol o basket. Posteriormente, algunas organizaciones proveían de servicios sociales a los grupos más excluidos: salud, créditos a interés bajo, vivienda y trabajo. A partir de redes informales se empezaron a generar organizaciones formales (HTA’s), muchas veces iniciadas por un grupo de migrantes cuya motivación central eran cuestiones filantrópicas en sus zonas de origen. Dichas organizaciones han crecido y extendido por todo el territorio norteamericano, aunque la ciudad de Los Ángeles es la zona en donde mayor presencia tienen, quizá porque es donde han llegado y se han establecido la mayor parte de los migrantes latinos –mexicanos y centroamericanos los más numerosos-.
Translation - English 2.1. Evolution of networks into formal organizations
The processes of trans-nationalization in migrations are encouraged by the quest improving the wellbeing of one’s family and even the place of origin. Transnational practices are carried out in many frames of reference and with the participation of many different actors. Family is the first actor in trans-nationalization; migratory projects stem from family strategies seeking social mobility or to just meet their every-day needs. For this reason, it is family that supports a family member’s individual decision. Therefore, a constant need to maintain mutual contact exists which is facilitated by better and cheaper means of communication. On the other hand, the economy can be a powerful transnational frame of reference. There are authors that claim that, with globalization, the flow of information is more immediate and consumption models and lifestyles with it. Thus, people tend to move to where the capital, work and economic benefits are superior to those offered in their own countries. Along with family and the economy, there are important actors that lay the ground of and drive trans-national spaces. Migrant associations act as a bridge from one country to another.
Hometown Associations (HTAs) constitute a tool for maintaining habits and customs of the migrants that make them up. Furthermore, these organizations are a place where organized immigrants can challenge or bring legal action against the government because of the abandoned state of their communities as well to improve and make socio-political change for their places of origin. It is important to emphasize that the HTAs’ work is voluntary and, because of this fact, they can do more than what the individual capabilities and human structure of each organization allow despite the work and leadership that these organizations have accomplished. Nevertheless, migrants that are familiar with and members of these types of organizations are a minority. The increase in visibility of these organizations in the United States is the result of a long tradition of transnational philanthropic activity and more so because of their size and organizational ability for political, social and economic projects. In most cases, the leaders of the HTAs work alone and are not able to train other colleagues that can substitute for them or support them, something which negatively impacts the organization’s development and growth. For this reason, the possibility of receiving resources from external agents gets them into difficulties more than helping them as they are not able to implement them effectively or on time (Escala and Rodríguez, 2011). These associations proliferated in the 1980s, especially in metropolitan areas and, since the end of the 1990s, they have been made up of mainly Mexicans and Central Americans. The majority were started with informal networks whose aim was to gather fellow ex-patriots together to celebrate national or religious holidays and to organize soccer or basketball teams. Subsequently, some organizations came about from social services for the most excluded groups: Health care, low-interest credit, housing and work. Formal networks (HTAs) began to form from informal networks, often initiated by a group of migrants whose main motivation consisted in philanthropic projects for their places of origin. These organizations have grown and spread throughout all North America though the city of Los Angeles is the area with the largest presence of them, perhaps because it is where most Latin immigrants have arrived and established themselves, Mexicans and Central Americans being the most numerous.

1.2 Zweckbestimmung
Der Wärmestrahler ISOTHERM dient zur Vorwärmung von Untersuchungstischen und Säuglingswickeltischen sowie zur Aufrechterhaltung der Körpertemperatur von Neugeborenen, Kindern und Erwachsenen.
1.3 Elektromagentische Emissionen und elektromagnetische Verträglichkeit
Der Wärmestrahler ISOTHERM erfüllt alle Anforderungen der Norm EN 60601-1-2.
Die elektromagnetischen Emissionen des Geräts sind daher sehr gering und können die Funktion von elektronischen Geräten in der unmittelbaren Umgebung nicht beeinflussen.
Achten Sie unbedingt darauf, dass in der Umgebung des Wärmestrahler ISOTHERM nur elektronische Geräte eingesetzt werden, die ebenfalls die Anforderungen der Norm EN 60601-1-2 erfüllen. Geräte mit zu hohen elektromagnetischen Emissionen können die sichere Funktion des Wärmestrahlers beeinträchtigen.

1.2 Intended Use
The ISOTHERM radiant heater can be used to preheat examination tables and baby changing tables as well as to maintain the body temperature of newborns, children and the elderly.
1.3 Electromagnetic Emissions Compatibility
The ISOTHERM radiant heater complies with all of the requirements of standard EN 60601-1-2.
The electromagnetic emissions of this device are very low and cannot affect the functioning of other nearby electronic appliances.
Be sure that any other electronic devices used near the ISOTHERM radiant heater also comply with the requirements of standard EN 60601-1-2. Appliances with too high of electromagnetic emissions can impair the safe functioning of the radiant heater.

Uso del Presente
El uso del presente en alemán es casi equivalente al presente en español. Se utiliza para:
• Tratar sucesos del presente
• Hechos atemporales como leyes físicas, etc.
• En alemán se usa frecuentemente el presente para acciones futuras con un adverbio de tiempo.
Ejemplo:
Ich komme morgen
Volveré mañana
Conjugación Regular
En la conjugación regular la raíz del verbo se mantiene invariante en todas las personas y a esta raíz se le agrega diferentes desinencias dependiendo de la persona.
Por ejemplo mostramos la conjugación del verbo: leben (vivir) con las desinencias en negrita:

Añadido de -e- entre la raíz y la desinencia
Si la raíz del verbo acaba en:
• -d, -t. como es el caso de bitten (pedir), arbeiten (trabajar).
• consonante fuerte (b, ch, d, f, g, p, t) seguida de -n o -m como es el caso de eröffnen (abrir algo), rechnen (calcular)
Se añade una -e- entre la raíz y la desinencia para que la pronunciación sea más sencilla.
Veamos por ejemplo como es la conjugación del verbo arbeiten en presente:

Fusión de la -s
Los verbos que sus raíces acaban en -s, -z, -x o -ß pierden una -s en la segunda persona.
Por ejemplo el verbo sitzen (sentarse), en segunda persona tendría que ser "sitzst", pero esto es realmente impronunciable. Por eso se pierde una s y queda simplemente como sitzt

Conjugación de los verbos acabados en -eln
Los verbos acabados en -eln como klingeln (llamar al timbre) en ocasiones pierden una e en la 1ª persona del singular. También hay que tener en cuenta que la 1ª persona y la 3ª persona del plural se forma en -n y no en -en

Conjugación de los verbos acabados en -ern
Los verbos acabados en -ern como ändern (cambiar) como en el caso anterior de los verbos acabados en -eln forman la 1ª persona y la 3ª persona del plural en -n en lugar de -en.

El presente en el lenguaje coloquial (Umgangssprache)
Es muy frecuente en lenguaje oral, y a veces en el lenguaje escrito, eliminar la e final de la 1ª persona del singular:

Un error habitual (entre los alemanes) es escribir esta contracción con apóstrofo: ich leb' o ich hab'.

Presente Continuo. Partícula "gerade"
En alemán se construye el presente continuo con la partícula gerade. Esta partícula aporta el significado que la acción se está realizando en este mismo momento. Gerade equivale al gerundio en español.

Hay una importante diferencia de matiz, la primera significa que aunque estudio alemán no tengo por qué estar haciéndolo en este mismo momento. La segunda significa que ahora estoy estudiando alemán.
La pasiva
Cuando el sujeto carece de importancia y lo que se quiere resaltar es el complemento directo, la oración se construye en pasiva:

A los pronombres que se comportan como artículos se les denomina pronombres en función atributiva.
Determinantes
A los artículos definidos, artículos indefinidos y pronombres en función atributiva se les denomina determinantes (Artikelwort).

• Un artículo definido
• Un artículo indefinido
• Un determinante posesivo
• Kein
Dado que la declinación es distinta según sea determinante o no.

El uso del presente en alemán es casi equivalente al presente en español. Se utiliza para:
The use of the present in German is almost the same as the present in English. It is used for:
• Tratar sucesos del presente
• Talking about events in the present
• Hechos atemporales como leyes físicas, etc.
• Things that are independent of time such as physical laws, etc.
• En alemán se usa frecuentemente el presente para acciones futuras con un adverbio de tiempo.

En la conjugación regular la raíz del verbo se mantiene invariante en todas las personas y a esta raíz se le agrega diferentes desinencias dependiendo de la persona.

Por ejemplo mostramos la conjugación del verbo: leben (vivir) con las desinencias en negrita:

En alemán se construye el presente continuo con la partícula gerade. Esta partícula aporta el significado que la acción se está realizando en este mismo momento. Gerade equivale al gerundio en español.
In German the present continuous tense is formed with the particle gerade. This particle makes the action sound like it is taking place at this very moment. Gerade is the equivalent of the gerund form in English.

Cuando el sujeto carece de importancia y lo que se quiere resaltar es el complemento directo, la oración se construye en pasiva:

El hecho de que los agentes económicos se reúnan en una cercanía geográfica y establezcan relaciones unos con otros con el fin de realizar mejor ciertas actividades económicas, se remonta a la época de los primeros complejos urbanos1. Los clústeres geográficos estrechamente relacionados siguen siendo un importante fenómeno económico incluso a principios del siglo XXI, consolidando a algunos de los actores más exitosos a lo largo de una amplia variedad de sectores globales, incluyendo (paradójicamente) el propio sector de la tecnología de la información que nos permite trabajar y comunicarnos de forma virtual.

The fact of economic actors come together in a single geographical community and establish relations with one another in order to better carry out certain economic activities is traced back to the time of the first urban centers.1 Tightly linked geographic groups continue to be an economic phenomenon even at the beginning of the 21st century, bringing some of the most successful actors together with a wide variety of global sectors, including (paradoxically) the very technology sector that allows us to work and communicate virtually with one another.
During the second half of the 20th century, actively belonging to an industrial cluster provided one of the best chances for small and intermediate-sized companies to survive and remain competitive on a regional, international and global scale. At the same time, large international, multi-national and global companies risked losing entire sectors of value chains in key areas in which they were competitors (such as manufacturing, product design, research and development (R D)) to capable and powerful companies closely tied in to specific geographic areas. Some of these large companies were capable of taking advantage of the enormous potential and capacity that industrial clusters offer. Der Ausdruck Explosion beschreibt eine schnelle Hitzefreisetzung (oder einen schnellen Druckanstieg) [Kinney, 1985]. Bei einer Explosion eines chemischen Sprengstoffs wird durch eine chemische Reaktion rasch Energie frei. Ein chemischer Sprengstoff wird durch eine initiale Einwirkung zur Explosion gebracht, die wiederum angrenzendes Material zur Explosion bringt. Dieser Vorgang kann sich durch die gesamte Masse des Sprengstoffs fortpflanzen. Es wird dabei zwischen einer Detonation und einer Deflagrantion unterschieden [Glassman, 2008]: Eine Detonation ist eine Schockwelle, die aufgrund der freigesetzten Energie einer chemischen Reaktion unterhalten wird und sich in einem hoch komprimierten Medium und mit Ueberschallgeschwindigkeit fortpflanzt. 1.2 Brandgase
1.2.1 Voraussetzungen für die Gefahrenabschätzung bei Bränden
Drei wichtige Bereiche müssen bei den Brandgasen erfasst werden:
Die Mengen müssen erfasst werden um quantitative Aussagen machen zu können. Die nichttoxischen Komponenten liefern dabei einen ganz wesentlichen Beitrag zum Volumen der Verbrennungsgase und damit auch zur Abschätzung der Konzentration. Die Toxizität liefert zusammen mit den Mengen als Dosis Angaben über Wirkungen. Der Geruch schliesslich ist von Bedeutung, weil er einerseits ein natürliches Element der Warnung darstellt und andererseits eine gewisse Validierung des verwendeten Modells ermöglicht.
1.2.2 Brandgaszusammensetzung
Ein Feuer oder ein Brand wird aus chemischen Reaktionen zwischen reduzierbaren Stoffen und dem oxidativ wirkenden Luftsauerstoff gebildet. Bei diesem Vorgang, der Verbrennung wird in vielen Lehrbüchern nur auf die vollständige Verbrennung eingegangen, bei der z.B. aus Alkanen Kohlendioxid und Wasserdampf entstehen. Diese beiden Gase sind toxisch ungefährlich. Allerdings sterben bei Bränden mehr als 60 % aller Toten durch Vergiftung mit akut toxischen Gasen [Basmer, 2004]. Bei Bränden, die unvollständig sind, müssen ausser Kohlendioxid und Wasser noch andere toxische Gase entstehen. So entstehen bei unvollständiger Verbrennung eines aliphatischen Kohlenwasserstoffes neben Kohlendioxid und Wasserdampf weiteren Gasen wie das unsichtbare, geruchlose und giftige Kohlenmonoxid (CO). Bei Vorhandensein von Heteroatomen im Brandgut können zusätzlich Blausäure (HCN), Salzsäure (HCl), Ammoniak (NH3), Stickoxiden (NOx) und vielen weiteren Gasen gebildet werden. Deshalb ist der Schutz von Einsatzpersonal und Bevölkerung vor den akut-toxischen und weiteren, latent gefährlichen Giftstoffen wichtig [Basmer, 2004].
Die Brandgaszusammensetzung ist von mehreren Parametern abhängig, wie der Zusammensetzung des Brandgutes, der Temperatur, des Drucks, der Anordnung des Brandgutes, der Umgebung des Brandgutes und der Zeitpunkt der Messung. Die Reproduzierbarkeit der Brandgas¬zusammen¬setzung von mehrfach wiederholten Testbränden, unter kontrollierten Laborbedingungen, liegt bei Gasen wie Kohlendioxid oder Kohlenmonoxid bei verschiedenen Serien zwischen ±20% und ±75%. Bei anderen Gasen ist die Reproduzierbarkeit ungünstiger [Gann, 2003]. Bei nicht kontrollierten Bedingungen, wie Unfällen, sind mit grösseren Abweichungen zwischen der Brandgas¬zusammensetzung und einem in der Literatur publizierten Brand zu rechnen.
Eine Abschätzung der toxischen Wirkung durch Brandgase bei einem Unfall wird von verschiedenen Autoren als ausgeschlossen beschrieben [Marshall, 1987]. Diese Feststellung hilft nicht über die Tatsache hinweg, dass die Verantwortlichen bei einem Brand trotzdem verhältnismässige und angemessene Entscheidungen treffen müssen. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es sinnvoll das verfügbare Wissen über Brände und Brandgase als Entscheidungsgrundlage zu verwenden.
1.2.3 Die Ermittlung der Brandgaszusammensetzung in einem Modell
Die Modellierung der quantitativen Zusammensetzung eines Brandgases bei kontrollierten Parametern lässt sich mit einem kinetischen Modell approximativ vorhersagen [Glassman, 2008]. Die chemischen Teilreaktionen sind von der Temperatur abhängig und je nach Teilreaktion wird Wärme frei (exotherm) oder wird gebraucht (endotherm). Das Gleichungssystem der Teilreaktionen, das einen Brand beschreibt ist daher gekoppelt. Die Verbrennung der Reinsubstanz Oktan führt, wie im folgenden Schema aufgezeichnet für die Moleküle CO2, H2O, C, CO, O2 und H2, zusätzlich zu einer grossen Anzahl von Kopplungen, weil die Konzentration einer Substanz in mehreren Teilreaktionen vorhanden sind:
Für Ermittlung der Brandgaszusammensetzung bedeutet dies, dass die Kinetik des Verbrennungsprozesses bekannt sein muss. Die Quellgeometrie und die nächste Umgebung beeinflusst den Abbrand durch die Wärme- und Druckverteilung, Zuströmung von Luft (Sauerstoff) und Ausbreitung der Brandgase. Die vielen nötigen Ausgangsparameter und Kenntisse der Kinetik erlauben die Anwendung dieser Methode nur für Einzelfälle. Für eine allgemein einsetzbare Methode, die auch bei Unfällen mit rollendem Gefahrgut angewendet werden kann ist diese Methode ungeeignet.
Deshalb wird in MET ein pragmatischer Ansatz angewendet. Die Brandgase in MET können mit zwei unterschiedlichen Methoden erfasst werden. Beiden Methoden ist dabei gemeinsam, dass nur die Gaskomponenten erfasst werden die entweder für das Gasvolumen und/oder die akute Gesamttoxizität einen nicht vernachlässigenden Beitrag leisten. Physikalische und toxische Eigenschaft des Gemisches werden dort wo möglich aus den einzelnen Eigenschaften der Gaskomponenten ermittelt. Diese Gemischeigenschaften werden dann für die eigentliche Ausbreitungsrechnung verwendet. Dieser Ansatz deckt sich mit den Richtlinien der Vereinigung zur Förderung des Deutschen Brandschutzes, die eine Beurteilung aufgrund von mehrerer Leitsubstanzen vorsieht [vfdb-Richtline 10/03]. Bei beiden Methoden ist es auch möglich nach Abbrandtemperatur, Sauerstoffüberschuss und –unterschuss oder Pre-Flashover oder Post-Flashover Phasen zu unterscheiden.
1.2.3.1 Methode 1: Brandgaszusammensetzungen aus Literaturdaten
In MET kann die Brandgas¬zusammensetzung eingegeben werden. Diese Methode ist bei Brand¬gasen, die auf Grund von Literaturdaten bekannt sind anwendbar. Beispielsweise gilt dies für Brände von Kunststoffen, wie z.B. der Brand von Polyvinylchlorid [Huggett, Levin, 1987].
1.2.3.2 Methode 2: Ableitung der Brandgas¬komponenten mit Mustererkennung
Heute sind über 40 Millionen chemische Sustanzen kommerziell erhältlich [CAS, 2010]. Von der überwiegenden Mehrzahl von Stoffen sind keine Brandgaszusammensetzungen, im Brandfall durch experimentelle Messungen bekannt. Deshalb ermittelt das Modell durch Mustererkennung mit Hilfe der chemischen Struktur automatisch eine Brutto¬reaktionsgleichung und setzt die Brandgutsubstanz in die chemische Reaktionsgleichung ein und leitet die Brand-gaszusammensetzung ab [Buff, Greim 1997]. Das Modell ermittelt dabei die Stöchiometrie der chemischen Bruttoreaktionsgleichung automatisch. Der Vorteil dieser Methode ist, dass eine schnelle erste Abschätzung der Gefahren durch die entstehenden Brandgase erhalten werden kann, auch wenn für die Substanz keine gemessenen Brandgaszusammensetzungen bekannt sind. Im folgenden Bild ist die vom Modell für Chlormethan gewählte Bruttoreaktionsgleichung oben ersichtlich. Weiter ist die daraus abgeleitete Brand¬gaszusammensetzung unten links ersichtlich.
1.2.4 Die Ausbreitungsrechnung von Brandgasen
Bei einer unvollständigen Verbrennung entstehenden eine grosse Zahl an ver-schiedenen Gasen. Mit der Anwendung des Konzentrationskriteriums in einem Reingasmodell auf die verschiedenen Gaskomponenten würden mehrere Gefährdungsdistanzen erhalten. Deshalb wird in vielen Modellen Brandgase nicht oder nur eine Gaskomponente, als sogenannte Leitsubstanz betrachtet und die Ausbreitungsrechnung mit dieser ausgeführt. Es stellt sich die Frage, wie gross der Fehler von Modellrechnungen etwa sein kann, wenn anstelle der Gemische Leitsubstanzen (z.B. die toxischste Komponente) eingesetzt werden. Isolierte Rechnungen für alle prozentualen Bestandteile mit ihren entsprechenden Anteilen, und die Wahl der Komponente mit dem konservativsten Ergebnis, ist eine heute weit verbreitete Methode. Eine Summation der so erhaltenen Resultate zu einer einzelnen Wolke ist in keinem Modell möglich, da die Summe der einzelnen Gaswolken nicht der Konzentration im Volumen der Wolke des Gemisches entspricht. Die Konzentrationen der Einzelsubstanzen in der Wolke entsprechen nicht der Superposition der Konzentrationen der Wolken der einzelnen Bestandteile.
Die Mängel bei der Anwendung von Reingasmodellen sind grundlegender Natur. Werden zum Beispiel 100 kg Chlor zusammen mit 1000 kg Hexan freigesetzt, dann bildet sich an der Quelle eine volumenmässig grössere Gaswolke, als wenn das Chlorgas alleine eine Gaswolke bildet — die Wolkenform einer reinen Chlorwolke, die Distanz und damit auch die betroffene Fläche verändern sich durch die Zumischung des toxisch vergleichsweise „inerten“ Gases Hexan. So haben die 1000 kg des etwa 50 - 100 mal weniger toxischen Hexans für die Toxizität des Gemischs der Gaswolke eine erhebliche Bedeutung; sie ergeben für diesen Fall eine grösseres Gefährdungsgebiet — der „inerte“ Anteil darf somit nicht, wie heute meist üblich, vernachlässigt werden. Dieser Fall ist insofern einfach, als Hexan sozusagen als Inertgas behandelt werden und im Quellterm der meisten Modelle berücksichtigt werden könnte.
Wer beispielsweise die toxischen Wirkungen der Gase eines Brandes [Roth, Weller, 1990] in einem Lager mit Wolle, Seide oder einem Polyamid abschätzen will, braucht Kenntnisse der Zusammensetzung dieser Materialien und eine Vorstellung über die Mengen der beteiligten Brandgase. Bei Wolle oder Seide sind die Bestandteile CO2, CO, H2O, NOx, SO2, NH3 und HCN aus Experimenten für einige typische Brandsituationen bekannt. Die Wirkungen solcher Gemische in Gaswolken werden wegen der grossen Komplexität heute entweder nicht abgeschätzt oder dann mit Hilfe einer Leitsubstanz vereinfacht.
Im MET-Modell sind, gegeben durch dessen Aufbau, auch Berechnungen für Stoffgemische mit unterschiedlichen Mengen und ihren Toxizitäten möglich [Bützer, Silvestri, 1994]. Damit könnten z.B. sehr reaktive Stoffe, die mit Luft (Sauerstoff) oder Luftfeuchtigkeit reagieren, aber auch Brände oder ganz allgemein Gemische der chemischen Produktion (Reaktionsansätze mit Produkten, Nebenprodukten und Lösungsmittel) korrekter erfasst werden, als dies mit einem Reingasmodell der Fall ist. Der Ansatz entspricht dem Vorgehen für die Abschätzung der unteren Explosionsgrenze für Gase nach Le Chatelier [Le Chatelier, 1891].
Das Modell MET verwendet ein Dosis/Effekt-Modell, in dem aus dem Konzentrationsverlauf integrieren über die Aufenthaltszeit die Dosis und mit einem Kurzzeittoxizitätswert Reizungen bei Personen ermittelt wird. Für die Beurteilung der Toxizität eines Brandgases von verschiedenen Substanzen in demselben Volumen werden in den Verhältnissen der Mole der Komponenten, also nach der Anzahl der Teilchen, gewichtet [Bützer, 1994]. Auch andere Toxizitätsmodelle [Forell, 2009] sind mit dem in MET verwendeten Verfahren zugänglich. Die Abbruchkriterien in MET sind entweder das Erreichen eines Populations¬anteil (10%) bei denen Reizungen nur noch beobachtet werden oder das Unterschreiten der Schwell¬konzentration [Bützer, 1992].
1.2.5 Zusammenfassung
Der Einbezug von Brandgasgemischen ermöglicht Gefahrenabschätzungen im MET-Ausbreitungs¬modell, die bisher nicht oder nur unter grösserem Zeitaufwand möglich waren. Die Methode mit der Wahl der Bruttoreaktionsgleichung auf Grund der chemischen Struktur erlaubt eine schnelle erste Abschätzung der Gefahren durch die entstehenden Brandgase, auch wenn für die Substanz keine gemessene Brandgaszusammensetzung bekannt ist.

1.1.1 Estimating the Peak Excess Pressure Value

1.2 Combustion Gases
1.2.1 Requirements for Estimating Hazards with Fires
Three important areas must be included for fumes from fires:

Quantity Toxicity Odor
The quantities must be included for quantitative evidence. By doing so, the non-toxic components make a very large contribution to the volume of the combustion gas and, therefore, also to the concentration estimate. The toxicity, together with the quantities, contributes as an indication of the dose on effects. Finally, the odor is of importance because it represents a natural warning element on one hand and, on the other, it allows for validation of the model to a certain extent.
1.2.2 Composition of Combustion Gas
A fire is made up of chemical reactions between reducible substance and atmospheric oxygen with its oxidative effect. In regard to this combustion process, many text books only deal with complete combustion, from which alkane carbon dioxide and vapor are produced. Both of these gases are not dangerous due to toxicity. However, more than 60% of all deaths due to fires occur from intoxication from acute toxic gases [Basmer, 2004]. Other toxic gases in addition to carbon dioxide and water must be produced from fires in which the material is not completely burned. That is how other gases like the invisible, odorless and poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) are produced in addition to carbon dioxide and water vapor with incomplete combustion of an aliphatic hydrocarbon. With the presence of hetero-atoms in the material being burned, additional hydrocyanic acid (HCN), hydrochloric acid (HCl), ammonia (NH3), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and many other gases can be formed. That is why protection for staff and the population against acute, toxic and other latent, dangerous toxic substances is important [Basmer, 2004].
The composition of a combustion gas depends on various parameters such as the composition of the fire, the temperature, the pressure, the position of the fire, the area surrounding the fire and the time at which measurements are taken. The reproducibility of the composition of a combustion gas of test fires reproduced various times under controlled laboratory conditions is between ±20% und ±75% for gases such as carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide for various series. Reproducibility is worse for other gases [Gann, 2003]. Larger deviations between the composition of the combustion gas and a fire published in literature are to be calculated for with uncontrolled conditions such as accidents.

1.2.3 Ascertaining the Composition of the Combustion Gas in a Model
Modeling the quantitative composition of a combustion gas with controlled parameters allows for approximate predictions with a kinetic model [Glassman, 2008]. The partial chemical reactions depend on temperature and heat is released (exothermic) or it is needed (endothermic) depending on the partial reaction. For this reason, the system of equations for partial reactions which describes a fire is interconnected. The combustion of the pure substance, octane, also leads to a large number of interconnections because the concentration of a substance in several partial reactions is present as depicted in the following scheme for the molecules CO2, H2O, C, CO, O2 and H2:
This means that the kinetics for the combustion process must be known to ascertain the composition of the combustion gas. The source geometry and the nearby surroundings influence the burning of material due to the distribution of heat and pressure, the flow of air (oxygen) to the fire and spread of the combustion gas. The many necessary starting parameters and knowledge about the kinetics allow for the use of this method only for individual cases. This method is not suitable as a general- use method that can also be used for accidents with rolling HAZMAT.
That is why a pragmatic approach is used in MET. The combustion gases in MET can be included with two different methods. Both methods only include gas components that either contribute significantly to gas volume and/or the acute total toxicity. Physical and toxic properties of the mixture are ascertained whenever possible from the different properties of the gas components. These mixture properties are then used for the basic propagation calculation. This approach is in accordance with the guidelines of the German Association for the Promotion of Fire Protection Transport of German which provides for assessment based on various indicator substances [vfdb-guideline 10/03]. With both methods it is possible to differentiate between burning temperature, excess/lack of oxygen or pre-flashover or post-flashover phases.
1.2.3.1 Method 1: Combustion Gas Compositions from Information in the Literature
The combustion gas composition can be entered in MET. This method is applicable for combustion gases that are known thanks to information in the literature. For example, this applies to fires with artificial substances like polyvinylchloride [Huggett, Levin, 1987].
1.2.3.2 Method 2: Deriving the Combustion Gas Components with Pattern Recognition
Today more than 40 million chemical substances are available commercially [CAS, 2010]. No combustion gas compositions are known of from experimental measurements for the large majority of substances in the case of fires. That is why the model ascertains an overall reaction equation with pattern recognition and the help of the chemical structure and uses the material being burned in the reaction equation and derives the combustion gas composition [Buff, Greim 1997]. By doing so, the model automatically ascertains the stoichiometry of the chemical overall reaction equation. The advantage of this method is that a quick initial estimate of the hazards due to the combustion gases being produced can be obtained, even if no measured combustion gas compositions are known for the substance. The overall reaction equation selected for chloromethane by the model is visible at the top in the following image. In addition, the combustion gas composition derived from it is visible at the bottom left.
1.2.4 Propagation Calculation of Combustion Gases
With incomplete burning of material, a large number of different gases are produced. By using the concentration criterion in a pure gas model for the different gas components various hazard distances are obtained. That is why no combustion gases or only a gas component are considered as a so-called indicator substance in many models and the propagation calculation is carried out with the component. The question presents itself of how large of an error may result from model calculations if indicator substances (the most toxic component, for example) are used instead of the mixture. Isolated calculations for component percentages with their corresponding proportion and the selection of the component with the most conservative result are the widely used method today. Summing the results obtained in this manner for one single cloud is not possible in any model as the sum of the different gas clouds does not correspond to the concentration in the volume of the mixture’s cloud. The concentrations of the individual substances in the cloud do not correspond to the superposition of cloud concentrations for the different components
Deficiencies when using pure gas models are inherent by nature. If 100kg of chlorine are released with 1000kg of hexane, for example, then a larger gas cloud is formed by volume at the source than if the chlorine gas were to form one alone. The pure chlorine cloud’s shape, the distance and thus the affected surfaces change with the mixing in of the toxic, comparatively “inert” hexane gas. That is why 1000kg of the approximately 50 – 100 times less toxic hexane make are very significant for the gas cloud; they create a larger hazard area in this case – therefore, “inert” parts cannot be ignored as is usually the case nowadays. This case is simple, in this respect, as hexane might be treated as a so-called inert gas and taken into account in most models’ source terms.
For example, anyone that wishes to estimate the toxic effects of gases from a fire [Roth, Weller, 1990] in a location with wool, silk or a polyamide needs to know about the composition of these materials and to have an idea about the amount of the combustion gases involved. For wool or silk the proportions of CO2, CO, H2O, NOx, SO2, NH3 and HCN are known from experiments for some typical fire situations. The effects of such mixtures in gas clouds are either not estimated due to its very complex nature or simplified with the help of an indicator substance.
Calculations for mixtures of substances with different amounts and their toxicity are possible [Bützer, Silvestri, 1994], given with this setup. This makes it possible to more appropriately document very reactive substance, for example, which react with the air (oxygen) or humidity but also fires or very general mixtures of produced chemically production (reaction mixtures with products, by-products and solvents) than is the case with a pure gas model. The approach corresponds to the procedure for estimating the lower explosion limit for gases according to Le Chatelier [Le Chatelier, 1891].
The MET model uses a dose/effect model in which irritations for people are determined by means of incorporating the retention time, dose and a short-term toxicity value from the concentration process. For the evaluation of the toxicity of a combustion gas of various substances in the same volume, the ratios of moles of the components are weighted, or according to the number of particles. Other toxicity models [Forell, 2009] are accessible with the approaches used in MET. The abort criteria in MET are either reaching a segment of the population (10%) for which irritations are still observed or for which the threshold concentration falls short of [Bützer, 1992].
1.2.5 Conclusion
The inclusion of combustion gas mixtures allows for estimating hazards in the MET propagation model which either was not possible up to this point or was only possible with very large amount of time. The method with the choice of the overall reaction equation based on the chemical structure allows for a quick initial estimate of dangers from the combustion gases produced, even if no measured combustion gas composition is known for the substance.
