Podniosło Wam sie kiedyś ciśnienie na wieść o tym, że sąsiad kupił sobie nowy samochód? albo że koleżanka z pracy dostała awans, o któym Wy też marzycie, ale nie macie na to perspektyw? Przypuszczam, że znacie to uczucie nieprzyjemnego ukłucia, gdy zdajemy sobie sprawę, że ktoś posiada skarb, który i nam się śni. Niekiedy temu uczuciu towarzyszy nawet pewna doza naszych złorzeczących myśli w kierunku owego szczęściarza....
Ostatnio, w dość poczytnej serii książek dla dzieci znalazłam fragment, w którym kilkuletnia bohaterka, po upadku na swoim rowerku „troszczeczkę się cieszyła, że również jej kolezance przydarzył się rowerowy upadek”. Mój chwilowy szok po przeczytaniu tego zdania, zastąpiła myśl, że uczucie zawiści jest naturalnym ludzkim uczuciem, obecnym w każdym z nas, niezależnie od płci czy wieku, co resztą dobrze pokazuje przykład małej dziewczynki z książki, jak i dorosłego autora, spod którego pióra ten tekst wyszedł.
Nie zmienia to faktu, że jest to wstydliwe uczucie, czego i mój szok jest zwiastunem („ale jak to? Tak bez ogródek ten autor o tym pisze? Czego on uczy dzieci?”). Ano niczego on uczyć nikogo nie musi, bo i i tak każdy z nas w sobie takie uczucia posiada. Czego się więc tu wstydzić? Zawiść, a raczej jej świadomość, jest bardzo krępująca. Musimy wtedy przyznać się przed sobą, że nienawidzimy kogoś za to, co ma i znieść upokorzenie, że my tego nie mamy. A nie lubimy wiedzieć o sobie, że moglibyśmy komuś źle życzyć, bo to kłóci sie z obrazem nas jako dobrych. Jeszcze trudniej jest czuć swój brak- że nie mamy czegoś, na czym tak bardzo nam zależy...To tylko niektóre powody, dla których często z naszej zawiści nie zdajemy sobie sprawy.
Wszyscy od czasu do czasu czegoś komuś zawiścimy. Natomiast różnimy się między sobą ilością takich uczuć oraz ich świadomością. Gdy podejrzewamy, że nasze uczucia do kogoś są podszyte zawiścią, możemy coś z tym zrobić. Natomiast gdy tkwimy w błogiej nieświadomości, wtedy to dopiero zaczyna się dziać.... Scenariuszy jest kilka: najprostszy to: (1) zabiorę ci, i ja bedę miał, a Ty nie; albo (2) zabiorę Ci i żadne z nas nie będzie miało, cierp tak jak ja! Scenariusz (1) znamy dobrze z obserweacji małych dzieci, które nie przebierają w środkach ani czynach, by wyrwać drugiemu dziecku np. upragniona zabawkę. Scenariusz (2) jest bardzo podobną wersją scenariusza (1), tylko w wykonaniu dorosych. Dorośli raczej nie wyrywają sobie nic dosłownie, ale tak dewaluują znienawidzonego szczęśliwaca, że jego skarb staje się „czymś godnym pożałowania”. „Ciekawe skąd sąsiad miał pieniądze na ten samochód?” I tu produkujemy serię nieprzychylnych wyobrażeń na temat kolegi, który szybko zamienia się w naszych oczach z szczęśliwego posiadacza nowego samochodu, w zwykłego krętacza!
Zawiść jest niszcząca i dla osby której zawiścimy (kto by chciał być nazywany krętaczem?) i dla nas samych. Dlaczego? Gdy zawiścimy nieświadomie idealizujemy daną osobę, a siebie dewaluujemy. Wyobrazmy to sobie na przykładzie gry w karty. Powiedzmy, że mamy na stole 4 karty do gry. Karta nr 1 to nasze zalety, karta nr 2 to nasze wady, karta nr 3 to zalety osoby, której zawiścimy, a karta nr 4 to jej wady. W sposób nieświadomy dokonujemy takiego przetasowania, w którym nam przypadają w udziale dwie katry z wadami, a drugiej osobie dwie karty z zaletami! Tym okropnym rozdaniem pozbawiamy się większości naszych mocnych stron! Jestesmy wtedy pod wpływem iluzji, w której nie możemy ani adekwatnie widzieć siebie, ani tej drugiej osoby. Nieźle to sobie ukartowalismy! Szkoda tylko, że nic o tym nie wiemy! Efekt jest natomiast ławty do przewidzenia. Skoro ten ktoś ma wszystko, a my nic, nie pozostaje nam nic innego, jak tylko tej osoby nienawidzieć („Przecież mówiłem, że to krętacz!”).
Wyobraźmy sobie teraz związek, w którym jeden z partnerów zarabia dużo wiecej niż drugi. Ten, który zarabia mniej, może wybrać nienawidzenie lepiej zarabiającego partnera, czego przejawem będzie rozliczanie go z tego, na co wydał pieniądze (na pewno na kolejne drogie perfumy dla siebie!), żadanie, by dzielił się z nami wszystkimi swoimi zarobkami, wpuszczanie go w poczucia winy wobec nas.
Zarabiający mniej może też wybrać inną drogę, np. zacząć myśleć: czy na pewno zarabiam za mało? co mogę zrobić, by zarabiać więcej, skoro chcę mieć więcej pieniędzy? czy w pracy wykorzystuję dobrze swój potencjał i swoje talenty, by mi w tym pomogły? Jak mogę uruchomić własne możliwości, by lepiej na mniepracowały? Próba odkopania własnego skarbca opłaci nam się dużo bardziej niż czyhanie na cudze bogactwo.
A co zrobić, jeśli nie da się niczego z siebie wykrzesaś? Gdy np. ktoś marzy o tym, by efektownie tańczyć, a ma do tańca dwie lewe nogi? Ważne wydaje się, by zadać sobie pytanie,czemu tak zależy nam na tym efektownym tańcu? Czemu nie możemy tańczyć po prostu, tak jak umiemy, czerpiąc przyjemność z muzyki i z ruchu? Albo czemu chcemy tańczyć w ogóle? Czy to lubimy?A co z innymi naszymi talentami? Czy je odkryliśmy? Czy umiemy docenić, że jestesmy dobrzy w czym innym?
Czas na nowe rozdanie: takie, w którym każdy będzie grał własnymi kartami. Szukajmy własnej mocy, badajmy jej ilość i rodzaj, no i korzystajmy z tego, co mamy w sobie fajnego, inspirowani również sukcesem tych, którym wcześniej zawiściliśmy.
Przy pisaniu tego tekstu korzystałam z książki Nevilla Symingtona „Becoming a person through psychoanalysis” (Karnac Books, 2007, Londyn), rozdz. XIX „Zawiść: analiza psychologiczna”.
Translation - English Step into your own power – or, how to resist the green-eyed monster
Have you ever felt your blood pressure rise on hearing that your neighbour has bought himself a new car? or that your colleague has been promoted to the position you’ve also been dreaming of – but that you have no chance of reaching? I imagine you know the unpleasant needling sensation we get when we realise that somebody has the treasure we’ve been dreaming of. Sometimes this feeling is even accompanied by some hostile thoughts towards the lucky person in question…
Recently, in a popular series of children’s books, I came across a passage in which the heroine, a little girl, falls off her bike and is “a little by cheered up by the fact that her friend also had a bike accident”. My momentary shock on reading this sentence was replaced by the thought that the feeling of jealousy is a natural human emotion, present in each of us, irrespective of gender and age, - which is demonstrated by the example of the little girl in the book, and the adult author who penned the text.
This doesn’t change the fact that it is an embarrassing feeling, and my own shock is a symptom of this (“Seriously? The author is just going to write about this without beating about the bush? What kind of a lesson is this for children?”) Well, no lesson is necessary here, because each of us has this feeling inside us anyway. So what is there to be ashamed of? Jealousy, or rather the awareness of it, is very embarrassing. We have to admit to ourselves that we hate somebody for what they have, and to endure the humiliation of not having it ourselves. And we don’t like to know that we could wish somebody ill, because this challenges the picture we have of ourselves as good people. It’s even harder to experience the sense of lack – that we don’t have something that we want so much … These are some reasons why we often are not aware of our jealousy.
We are all jealous of somebody else at times. But we differ in terms of the intensity of the feeling and our awareness of it. When we suspect that our feelings towards somebody are underpinned with jealousy, we can do something about it. However, when we are blissfully unaware of our feelings, that is when things can really get out of hand …. There are several possible scenarios: the simplest is (1) I’ll take it, and then I’ll have it and not you; or (2) I’ll take it from you and then neither of us will have it – you can suffer like me! We know scenario (1) well from observing small children, who don’t waste time choosing their tools or actions when they want to tear a coveted toy out of the hands of another child. Scenario (2) is very similar to scenario (1), except it’s the adult version. Adults don’t usually tear anything out of each other’s hands literally, but they put the resented lucky person down so much that their treasure starts to appear unattractive. “I wonder where our neighbour got the money for that car?” and here we produce a series of unfavourable possibilities in our imaginations about someone who, in our minds, is fast changing from the lucky owner of a new car to a simple crook!
Jealousy is destructive both for the person we are jealous of (who would want to be labelled a crook?) and for ourselves. Why? When we are jealous, we unconsciously idealise that person, and devalue ourselves. We can picture this as a game of cards. Let’s say we have 4 playing cards on the table. Card nr 1 is our assets, card nr 2 is our faults, card nr 3 is the assets of the person we are jealous of, and card nr 4 is their faults. Without realizing it, we shuffle the cards in such a way that we get the two cards with faults, and the other person gets the two cards with assets! When the cards are dealt in this horrible way, we deprive ourselves of most of our strengths! We are then in the grips of an illusion that stops us seeing ourselves or the other person clearly. What a hand we have dealt ourselves! The only problem is we don’t know that’s what we’ve done! The effect, however, is easy to predict. Since this person has everything, and we have nothing, then what can we do but hate them? (“I always knew he was a crook!”)
Now let’s take a relationship, in which one partner earns much more than the other. The person who earns less can choose to hate the high earning partner, which will result in checking what she is spending money on (surely on some more expensive perfume!), demanding that he shares all his earnings, or making her feel guilty.
The person who earns less can also choose a different path, for example by thinking: is it really true that I don’t earn enough? What can I do to earn more, if I want to have more money? Do I make good use of my potential and talents at work, so that they can help me achieve this? How can I put my abilities to use, so that they can work better for me? Attempting to uncover our own treasure trove will pay off far better than eyeing somebody else’s wealth.
What can you do when you can’t get any more out of yourself? When, for example, you dream of being able to dance elegantly, but you have two left feet? It seems important to ask yourself why dancing elegantly is so important to you. Why can’t you just dance the way you are able to, enjoying moving to the music? Or why do you want to dance at all? Do you enjoy it? What about your other talents? Have you discovered them? Are you able to appreciate yourself for being good at something else?
It’s time for a new deal: one in which everyone plays with their own cards. Let’s look for our own strength, see how much we have of it and what it’s like, and then make use of the good things we have, inspired by the success of those we used to be jealous of.
