Source text - English We are happy to announce that our contribution to projects fighting energy poverty has exceeded 1,000,000 €!
For each MWh of EKOenergy consumption, 0.10 € goes to our Climate Fund. With these contributions, we finance new renewable energy projects in developing countries. These projects change lives by improving access to reliable, clean energy and bring our world closer to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.
With our 47th Climate Fund project, our contribution has exceeded 1,000,000 € since 2015. To learn more about how purchasing EKOenergy-labelled energy creates additional impact, see our results.
EKOenergy makes it easy to go the extra mile
From small businesses to large corporates and households, all EKOenergy consumers contribute to our Climate Fund and we are proud to see this network of positive energy grow. This wouldn’t be possible without the energy consumers who choose EKOenergy-labelled renewable energy to take an extra step for nature. We are also thankful to licensed EKOenergy sellers for making EKOenergy-labelled renewables available.
To ensure local support and maximise opportunities for replication, the projects selected to receive financing from the EKOenergy Climate Fund always have local partners involved. Special thanks go to the humanitarian and development NGOs that manage these projects.
EKOenergy also has a separate Environmental Fund to mitigate the damage done by hydropower plants. This Fund finances mainly river restoration projects to improve living conditions for aquatic species.

Source text - English L’Arbre à Café is a coffee roastery that imports its specialty coffees directly from farmers and does the roasting in Paris using EKOenergy-labelled gas. L’Arbre à Café‘s coffees come from sustainable, regenerative agriculture and diversified forests, and are sold online and in its two Parisian shops. We asked Hippolyte Courty, founder of L’Arbre à Café, a few questions to find out more about the importance they place on sustainable energy and what led them to choose EKOenergy-labelled gas.
How and when did the idea of using EKOenergy-labelled gas come about?
The idea was born this year when we moved our offices and production sites. In designing this new space, one of our priorities was to reduce our energy consumption by switching to 100% renewable, clean and, as far as possible, certified energy.
With regard to energy saving, we have equipped ourselves with the most energy-efficient production equipment, including roasters. Today, for example, we have a roaster that consumes up to 40% less energy than its predecessor.
In addition, we wanted to find suppliers of renewable energies that offered extra guarantees that their energy was truly renewable and green. However, as we are non renewable energy professionals, this was not an easy task. Indeed, when looking for a supplier, it is very easy to see the cheapest one, but on the other hand finding one who certifies that 100% of the gas or energy you buy is renewable is much more difficult than it seems.
This is why we decided to ask for EKOenergy-labelled gas. We first signed a contract without an ecolabel and asked our supplier to check whether he can offer renewable gas with the EKOenergy label. Once we became sure it’s possible, we switched to an EKOenergy labelled contract with the same supplier.
Why are sustainability and renewable energy important to L’Arbre à Café?
L’Arbre à Café is a pioneer in sustainable coffee and has always regarded taste quality, social quality and environmental quality as equally important. Our supply of gas, electricity or energy is just as important to us as our coffee and other goods. We want that our ingredients as well as all steps of the production process are of high-quality right up to the end, right up to the management of energy. Energy management is crucial for L’Arbre à Café and we want to communicate about it, and show that words and actions can go hand in hand and be as attainable and concrete as possible.
Prior to working with the EKOenergy ecolabel, we already had a focus on sustainability. Our coffees are certified organic and/or biodynamic, we are direct producers and we are an Ecotable supplier (Ecotable is a label for eco-responsible restaurants in France). It was already obvious to us that our fleet of vehicles had to be electric and that we had to use installations and equipment with the highest performance, however, we now wanted them to be energy efficient too. Perhaps the most important point, for us, is that the EKOenergy ecolabel allows us to find gas that is not only 100% renewable, but also fulfills additional sustainability criteria.
This allows the consumer, our customers and our partners to see the depth and reality of our commitment. We have to be as clear and transparent as possible with our consumers, and have unambiguous communication and actions. We buy 100% renewable energy and we proudly use the labels and certificates that guarantee our words and our source.

What was the purchasing process for the EKOenergy-labelled gas for L’Arbre à Café in France?
We contacted EKOenergy to find out which suppliers they work with. In France, energy companies are very efficient at offering green tariffs to individuals yet there seem to be much less options for commercial enterprises. We contacted all the renewable energy suppliers to ask if they were working with EKOenergy, and if they could provide energy not for domestic use but for commercial purposes. It turned out that only ekWateur could supply us with EKOenergy-labelled gas.
How do you communicate about your use of EKOenergy-labelled energy?
We do joint communication and we add the logo on our packaging. We are currently installing our Wall of Fame in the workshop too, listing all our partners. Also, we explain that our coffee is roasted using green and renewable natural gas. We are quite proud to say that we are among the first roasters in the world to use EKOenergy-labelled gas.
In addition to your energy choice, what other “sustainable” choices are you pursuing or planning to pursue?
Our first sustainable choice is regarding agriculture as our plantations are, at the very least, certified as organic and often by Demeter, a renowned biodynamic agricultural certifier in France. Also, we have a carbon neutrality objective. We are working on the life cycle analysis of our coffees and, by reducing our emissions and offsetting our carbon emissions, we aim to become carbon neutral by September 2020. We participate in many conferences and podcasts in order to promote our green and sustainability focus, which is anchored in reality and in each and every coffee bean. Gas is the driving force behind roasting and roasting is the core of our business. Putting sustainability at the heart of our business and at the heart of our craftsmanship, is, to us, truly fundamental.

Quando e como surgiu a ideia de usar gás rotulado EKOenergy?
A ideia nasceu esse ano quando transferimos nossos escritórios e áreas de produção. Ao projetar este novo espaço, uma de nossas prioridades era reduzir nosso consumo de energia mudando para energia 100% renovável, limpa e, dentro do possível, certificada.
Quanto à economia de energia, nós nos equipamos com os equipamentos de produção mais energeticamente eficientes, incluindo torrefadoras. Hoje, por exemplo, nós temos uma torrefadora que consome até 40% menos energia que sua antecessora.
Além disso, nós queríamos encontrar fornecedores de energias renováveis que oferecessem garantias extras de que sua energia é realmente renovável e verde. Entretanto, como somos profissionais de energia não renovável, essa foi uma tarefa difícil. De fato, quando se procura um fornecedor, é muito fácil ver o mais barato, mas, por outro lado, encontrar um que certifique que 100% do gás ou energia que você compra é renovável é muito mais difícil do que parece.
É por isso que nós decidimos encomendar gás rotulado EKOenergy. Por que a sustentabilidade e a energia renovável são importantes para a L’Arbre à Café?
A L’Arbre à Café é pioneira em café sustentável e sempre encarou a qualidade de sabor, qualidade social e qualidade ambiental como igualmente importantes. Nosso suprimento de gás, eletricidade ou energia é tão importante quanto nosso café e outros produtos. Nós queremos que tanto nossos ingredientes como todos os passos do processo de produção sejam de alta qualidade até o final, inclusive no gerenciamento de energia. O gerenciamento de energia é crucial para a L’Arbre à Café e nós queremos nos comunicar sobre isso, e mostrar que palavras e ações podem andar lado a lado e ser o mais atingíveis e concretos o possível.
Antes de trabalharmos com o rótulo ecológico EKOenergy, nós já tínhamos um foco na sustentabilidade. Nossos cafés são certificados orgânicos e/ou biodinâmicos, nós somos produtores diretos e somos um fornecedor Ecotable (Ecotable é uma marca para restaurantes ecologicamente responsáveis na França). Já era óbvio para nós que nossa frota de veículos tinha que ser elétrica e que nós tínhamos que utilizar instalações e equipamentos da mais alta performance, mas, nós agora queríamos que eles também fossem energeticamente eficientes. Talvez o ponto mais importante, para nós, é que o rótulo ecológico EKOenergy nos permite encontrar gás que não apenas é 100% renovável, mas também preencha critérios adicionais de sustentabilidade..
Isto permite que o consumidor, os clientes e os nossos parceiros vejam o nível e a realidade de nosso comprometimento. Nós temos que ser o mais claros e transparentes o possível com nossos consumidores, e ter comunicação e ações inequívocas. Nós compramos energia 100% renovável e orgulhosamente usamos as etiquetas e certificados que garantem nossa palavra e nossas fontes.

Qual foi o processo de compra do gás rotulado EKOenergy para a L’Arbre à Café na França?
Nós contatamos a EKOenergy para descobrir com quais fornecedores eles trabalham. Como vocês se comunicam quanto ao seu uso de energia rotulada EKOenergy?
Nós fazemos comunicação conjunta e adicionamos o logo em nossas embalagens. Nós estamos atualmente instalando nossa Parede da Fama na oficina também, alistando todos os nossos parceiros. Além disso, nós também explicamos que nosso café é torrado utilizando gás natural renovável e verde. Nós estamos bem orgulhosos de dizer que estamos entre as primeiras torrefadoras do mundo a utilizar gás rotulado EKOenergy.
Além de sua escolha de energia, que outras escolhas “sustentáveis” vocês estão buscando ou planejando buscar?
Nossa primeira escolha sustentável é com relação à agricultura já que nossas plantações são, ao menos, certificadas como orgânicas e frequentemente pela Demeter, uma renomada certificadora de agricultura biodinâmica na França. Também, nós temos um objetivo de neutralidade de carbono. Nós estamos trabalhando na análise do ciclo de vida de nossos cafés e, por reduzir nossas emissões e compensar nossas emissões de carbono, nós almejamos ser carbonicamente neutros por setembro de 2020. Nós participamos em muitas conferências e podcasts com o objetivo de promover nosso foco na sustentabilidade e no verde, que está presente na realidade e em todo e cada grão de café. O gás é a força motora por trás da torrefação e a torrefação é o centro de nosso negócio. Colocar a sustentabilidade na alma de nosso negócio e na alma de nossa perícia é, para nós, realmente fundamental.

Source text - English Ritex, a German condom and lubricant producer, is now using EKOenergy-labelled electricity, incorporating the EKOenergy logo into their newest product line PRO NATURE. We asked them a few questions about this recent development, to learn more about their focus on sustainability and what led them to choose EKOenergy-labelled electricity.
Why did you choose to start an environmentally friendly product line? What are the most important messages you want to convey with this choice?
Ritex is what we call in Germany a “KMU” – a small/medium sized company which is typical to the traditional German economy. We are still completely family owned, now in the third generation, and we are specialised in a quite narrow product field (condoms and lubricants). For us, branding our products as “Made in Germany” is not only about striving for the best possible quality and efficiency but also a dedication to sustainability. While the latter, in previous times, applied almost completely to questions of economic stability, the meaning of sustainability has broadened in Germany, and especially for Ritex, in recent years due mainly to ecological issues. With this, we have already found ourselves putting in a lot of effort trying to make our company more sustainable in ecological terms. Time and time again we undertake steps to boost the efficiency of our company – aiming for the best for our economic and ecological future. Our new PRO NATURE product range then isn’t really a new approach for us but more a consequent step in an already long lasting journey.
Apart from consuming EKOenergy, what other decisions have you taken to be more sustainable?
Ritex uses EKOenergy labelled electricity
Almost ten years ago we invested in a new production structure to reuse the heat-excess of one production-step to lower the demand for heat in other production-steps. This has been very helpful in reducing our overall energy demand and thus our CO2 emissions. We also try to identify all smaller possibilities to save energy, such as more energy-efficient lighting, better insulation for buildings, the reduction of waste in all steps of our production, in our administration and so on. Our first aim, when it comes to ecological issues, is to reduce our energy demand (in any form whatsoever) so that CO2 emission is prevented from the beginning. If this is not possible, we try to find an alternative with as little impact on the environment as possible, like EKOenergy for electricity or FSC-certified plantations for Natural-Rubber-Latex. If that isn’t possible, we try to compensate for our impact on the environment with climate certificates like we do for our natural gas demand. Also, we have a cooperation with the largest German environmental organisation _NABU e.V._ to protect insects – especially wild bees. This year we have a special Condom-Promotion-Package called BEE HAPPY for instance. Out of the sales revenue of this promotion we are donating EUR 10.000 to NABU.
How did the process of choosing EKOenergy labelled electricity go for you?
Since our entire production is located in Bielefeld, Germany, we were fortunate that it was easy, only having to speak to our local energy provider (the Stadtwerke Bielefeld), with him proposing some options for using environmentally friendly electricity. We decided to choose EKOenergy because it was important for us to use electricity in which generation had been not only CO2-neutral, but also had as little impact on the environment as possible.
Do you think that consumers are valuing products made in a more sustainable way? Has the new product line been received well?
From our experience the vast majority of consumers choose a more sustainable product, as long as other important parameters (such as price, performance and so on) meet an acceptable standard. In the end the overall package of the product has to convince the consumer but we believe, that ecological sustainability is becoming a more and more important factor. Our new Ritex PRO NATURE condoms have just been launched on the European markets, but initial feedback looks quite promising. Upon aiming to create a perfect-overall-product-package, we are very confident that Ritex PRO NATURE condoms will meet the needs of the market.

Por que vocês decidiram começar uma linha de produtos favorável ao meio ambiente? Quais são as mensagens mais importantes que vocês desejam transmitir com essa decisão?
A Ritex é o que nós chamamos na alemanha de uma “KMU” – uma empresa de pequeno/médio porte que é típica da economia tradicional alemã. Nós ainda somos uma empresa totalmente familiar, atualmente na terceira geração, e somos especializados em uma área bastante estreita de produtos (preservativos e lubrificantes). Para nós, marcar nossos produtos com “Feito na Alemanha” não é apenas sobre se empenhar pela máxima qualidade e eficiência mas também uma dedicação para com a sustentabilidade. Apesar de este último, em tempos passados, ter sido aplicado quase que exclusivamente à questões de estabilidade econômica, o significado de sustentabilidade se expandiu na Alemanha, especialmente para a Ritex, em anos recentes devido principalmente a questões ecológicas. Com isto, nós já nos pegamos fazendo um grande esforço para tornar nossa companhia mais sustentável em termos ecológicos. Vez após vez nós empreendemos medidas para aumentar a eficiência de nossa companhia – visando o melhor para o nosso futuro econômico e ecológico. Nosso novo leque de produtos PRO NATURE então não é realmente nenhuma nova abordagem para nós, mas sim um passo subsequente em uma já duradoura jornada.
Além de consumir EKOenergy, que outras decisões vocês tomaram para serem mais sustentáveis?
Ritex uses EKOenergy labelled electricity
Há quase dez anos nós investimos em uma nova estrutura para reutilizar o calor excessivo de uma etapa de produção para reduzir a demanda de calor em outras etapas. Isto tem sido de grande ajuda na redução geral de nossa demanda de energia e, consequentemente, nossas emissões de CO2. Nós também tentamos identificar todas as possibilidades menores de economizar energia, como iluminação mais eficiente, melhor isolamento térmico para os edifícios, redução do desperdício em todas as etapas de nossa produção, em nossa administração e assim por diante. Nosso primeiro alvo, quando se fala em questões ecológicas, é reduzir nossa demanda de energia (de todas as formas possíveis) para que as emissões de CO2 sejam evitadas desde o início. Se isso não for possível, nós tentamos encontrar uma alternativa com o menor impacto ambiental possível, como EKOenergy para a eletricidade ou plantações com certificado FSC para látex de borracha natural. Se isso não for possível, nós tentamos compensar por nosso impacto ambiental com certificados climáticos como fazemos com nossa demanda de gás natural. Além disso, nós temos uma parceria com a maior organização ambiental alemã _NABU e.V._ para proteger insetos – especialmente abelhas silvestres. Este ano nós temos um pacote de preservativos especial de promoção chamado BEE HAPPY, por exemplo. Nós estamos doando 10.000 EUR do rendimento das vendas desta promoção para a NABU.
Como foi o processo de escolher eletricidade classificada como EKOenergy para vocês?
Já que nossa produção é inteiramente localizada em Bielefeld, Alemanha, nos beneficiamos de ter sido bem fácil, precisando somente falar com nosso provedor local de energia (a Stadtwerke Bielefeld), com ele nos propondo algumas opções para utilizar eletricidade ambientalmente amigável. Nós escolhemos a EKOenergy porque era importante para nós utilizar energia cuja geração tenha sido não apenas neutra em CO2, mas também tenha tido o mínimo impacto ambiental possível.
Vocês acham que os consumidores estão valorizando produtos produzidos de um modo mais sustentável? A nova linha de produtos foi bem recebida?
Pela nossa experiência, a grande maioria dos consumidores escolhem produtos produtos mais sustentáveis, contanto que outros parâmetros importantes (como preço, qualidade, e etc.) atinjam um padrão aceitável. No fim das contas o pacote geral do produto tem que convencer o consumidor, mas nós acreditamos que a sustentabilidade ecológica está se tornando um fator cada vez mais importante. Nossos novos preservativos Ritex PRO NATURE acabaram de ser lançados nos mercados europeus, mas o retorno inicial parece bastante promissor. Ao focar em criar um pacote geral perfeito do produto, estamos confiantes de que os preservativos Ritex PRO NATURE vão atingir as necessidades do mercado.

Source text - English Athens, Greece - Racist attacks targeting the homes of migrant workers have surged in Piraeus, a port city near the Greek capital, since Christmas, according to an anti-racist activist group.
More than 30 homes where migrant labourers reside - most of whom are Pakistani nationals - have been targeted since December 25, the anti-racist group Keerfa said on Friday.
Petros Constantinou, Keerfa's national director, said the sharp uptick in violence comes amid a 40-day period of attacks on migrant homes in the area.
"It's been happening at least three times per week," he told Al Jazeera. "They are targeting homes where it is obvious migrants are living."
The incidents have taken place primarily in Renti and Nikaia, two neighbourhoods in Piraeus with large immigrant populations.
Constantinou said anti-Muslim slogans had also been spray-painted on the entrances and walls of several homes. "These appear to be organised attacks," he said, explaining that the assailants were swiftly picked up by getaway cars after the incidents concluded.
He added that similar attacks have taken place to a lesser degree in nearby neighbourhoods in recent weeks.
"It seems that the attack squads of Golden Dawn are coming back and teaching new members how to attack migrants," Constantinou argued, referring to the Greek neo-fascist party that currently has 16 seats in the national parliament.
Javed Aslam, president of the Pakistani Community in Greece organisation, explained that the attackers broke the glass of windows in several homes while shouting xenophobic comments.
"They are saying 'you're dirty, leave our country' while they do it," he told Al Jazeera.

"Parece que os esquadrões de ataque da Aurora Dourada estão retornando e ensinando novos membros como atacar imigrantes," argumentou Constantineau, referindo-se ao partido neo-fascista grego que atualmente ocupa 16 assentos no parlamento nacional.
Javed Aslam, presidente da organização Comunidade Paquistanesa na Grécia, explicou que os agressores quebraram os vidros das janelas de muitas residências enquanto gritavam comentários xenofóbicos.
"Eles dizem 'você é sujo, deixe nosso país' enquanto o fazem," disse ele ao Al Jareeza.
