Source text - Korean 100주년 기념의 물결 속에서 나타난 특징은 무엇이었을까? 문재인 대통령의 3·1절 100주년 기념식 연설은 다음과 같이 시작되었다. “100년 전 오늘, 우리는 하나였습니다. 3월 1일 정오, 학생들은 독립선언서를 배포했습니다. 오후 2시, 민족대표들은 태화관에서 독립선언식을 가졌고, 탑골공원에서는 5천여 명이 함께 독립선언서를 낭독했습니다. (…) 노동자와 농민, 부녀자, 군인, 인력거꾼, 기생, 백정, 머슴, 영세상인, 학생, 승려 등 우리의 장삼이사들이 3·1 독립운동의 주역이었습니다. 그날 우리는 왕조와 식민지의 백성에서 공화국의 국민으로 태어났습니다. 독립과 해방을 넘어 민주공화국을 위한 위대한 여정을 시작했습니다. 100년 전 오늘, 남과 북도 없었습니다.”
Translation - English Certain tendencies that surfaced during the commemorative period are noteworthy, some of which manifested in President Moon Jae-in's speech during the celebration:
"One hundred years ago today, we were one. On March 1st, 1919, the students began to distribute the Declaration of Independence at noon. As the national representatives declared independence in T'aehwagwan at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, about five thousand people gathered at T'apkol Park and read out loud the proclamation together. ... It was the ordinary people who led the independence movement, such as workers, farmers, women, soldiers, rickshaw drivers, kisaeng, butchers, house servants, merchants, students, and monks. Those who were formerly royal and colonial subjects transformed into members of a republic, and embarked on a great journey toward a democratic republic, for which liberation and independence were only the beginning. One hundred years ago today, we were not even divided into North and South."

My name is Hangil Jang, and I am currently a freelance writer, translator, and interpreter working mostly in the field of performing arts and East Asian studies. I have undertaken various jobs from conference interpretation, tech interpretation, forum interpretation to publication translation--ranging from conference papers, small booklets, essays, academic articles, and book chapters to monographs--and subtitles translation for independent films. I myself have also written and published journal articles and book chapters in both English and Korean. I have received a master's degree in Humanities from the University of Chicago, and moved to South Korea in June 2016, where I have started my work as translator. Currently, I am based in Berlin, Germany.
