Source text - Hebrew איריס קלת הרגלים ובעלת הכנפיים הכחלחלות- זהובות היתה שליחת האלים. היא נהגה לעטות צעיף שקוף ומתנפנף בעל צבעים רכים ומתחלפים ובאור הזריחה או ביום גשם, ניתן היה לראות את ההילה בצבעי הקשת מעל לראשה. בעיקר שירתה היא את הרה, מלכת השמים. היא נהגה להעביר הודעות מן האלים לאלים אחרים ועשתה תמיד שליחותה במהירות ובנאמנות. היא עברה מקצה העולם לקצהו במהירות הרוח ויכולה היתה לחדור ולהגיע בשליחויותיה אף למעמקי הים או אל השאול. היא נהגה ללוות את נשמות הנשים שנבחרו לשהות אחר מותן בשדות השלווה של עולם המתים. כאשר רצו האלים למסור הודעות לבני תמותה והעדיפו שלא להשתמש בשרותי הכוהנים, נדרשו לשירותי הבלדרות שלה. או אז היתה היא פורשת את גשרה הזוהר, את הקשת בענן, כדי לגלוש עליו ממרומי האולימפוס וממהרת להביא את דבר האלים לאדם הנבחר.

Translation - English Iris – light of foot, with wings of purplish-blue and gold - was the messenger of the gods. She was always clothed in a sheer, flowing veil - woven from the softest hues that changed in the sunlight, or on a rainy day - and a halo, made from all the colors of the rainbow, adorned her head. Mostly, she serves Hera, Queen of the Heavens. Quickly and devotedly, she would take messages from one god to another.
She would fly to the ends of the world with the speed of the Wind, and on these missions she could reach to the depths of the oceans, or into the netherworld. She could accompany the souls of those women who were selected, after their deaths, to spend eternity in the tranquil fields of the world inhabited by the dead.
When the gods wanted to send messages to mortals, and preferred not to use the services of the high priests, they asked for Hera’s courier. Then, she would spread a shimmering arc - her rainbow in the clouds - so that she could glide along it to the heights of Olympus, and swiftly bring messages from the gods to whomever they had chosen.
One day, Hera called her, the tears flowing from her eyes. Iris was startled, because Hera did not usually cry, and she rushed to her side. “Yes, my lady, how can I help you?”, she asked, concerned. “Please, sit and I will tell you, because I need your assistance”, said the goddess. “Surely you remember that Cyex, King of Thrace“, she said breathlessly, “was on his way to consult with The Oracle, and his ship sunk in the ocean. There were no survivors. I am sure you recall that his wife, Alcyone, created a magnificent shrine in his memory on the cliff where she lives, where she faithfully honors my priestesses. Since her husband left, she spends all her time in my temple, offering up sacrifices and praying for his safety. She doesn’t know that he is dead”.
Hera breathed deeply, and wiped away a tear that had rolled down her cheek. “She must be told of his death, but I don’t want the priestess to do that. I want you to fly to her and, gently, break the sad news.
Faithful Iris left on this sorrowful mission with the speed of summer lightening. She found Alcyone at the entrance to the temple, her eyes red from tears - or from the smoke of the sacrifices – as she gazed out over the ocean. Iris approached her, caressed her softly and enfolded her within the veil of many colors. Alcyone did not understand the message of the gods, and asked for an explanation, which Iris knew did not usually happen. Iris told her what had befallen her husband, and remained by her side, embracing her. Alcyone stood, silent and still, her gaze far away into the ocean. Suddenly, Alcyone shook herself free from her thoughts, rushed to the edge of the cliff, and from there, floated towards the water, still wrapped in Iris’s veil.
Hera, who had watched all of this from above, could not let her die like that, crashing from the clifftop. On her way down, she was transformed. She became smaller, and wings grew from her. Her body became the same color as the veil she was enfolded in. By the time she reached the water she was no longer a woman, but a beautiful seabird, the same colors as the veil. Above her, in the skies, floated another seabird. Cyex her husband, had also become a seabird. The two of them, from the very depths of their seabird hearts, performed a dance of thanksgiving to Hera. Since that time, they have made their home on the shores of the Aegean Sea, and during breeding time the sea is peaceful, so that the fruits of the god’s love will have nothing to fear.
In gratitude for this job, and for many other tasks, Hera decided to hold a banquet in honor of Iris, her faithful messenger. She invited all of the gods to the banquet. Each of them brought a gift for the guest of honor. One god brought colored feathers, another, a scarf; others brought necklaces of coral, and the god of the ocean brought a shell in which you could hear the sound of the waves.
Hera wanted to surprise Iris with a special gift. She created, in her honor, a beautiful flower, with colors reminiscent of the rainbow she had used as a glimmering arc that stretched between the heavens and the earth. Emotionally Iris thanked the gods, and asked Hera the name of the amazing flower. Hera smiled and said, “This flower was created in your honor, and thus, it will be named for you - Iris”.
