German term
Kompetenzprofil
German to English
Marketing

... of a company, not somebody who's looking for a new job.
"Der neue Report unterstreicht das produkt- und anwendungstechnische Kompetenzprofil von Firma ABC GmbH."
ABC is a manufacturer of construction equipment, and the report is about one of their machines in operation.
Kompetenz is another one of my 'hate' words. Help much appreciated.

It was 'never "competence"'. If you want to disagree, quote correctly. I would never use competence in such a context, it's translatorese.

Comment: "Thanks all for your help. I went with Alan's "portfolio of expertise" but will include Steffen's equally good suggestions in the glossary for future reference."

Note from asker:
Can you provide any references that would support a literal translation? |
I'm sorry, Sven, but I simply have to say it because it won't go away. If I had thought that a literal translation was all that was needed here, I wouldn't have posted the question at all. Doing just that - offering a literal translation without bothering to back it up by any references - isn't helpful at all. Thanks anyway. |

: :o( // @ C.H. There is a subtle difference between ‘competencE’ (= being just about good enough at your job not to get fired) and ‘competencY' (http://www.roi-learning.com/guides/terms.htm ). Explanation :0) deserves no better than disagree :0(

Another possibility:
The new report highlights the product and outlines ABC's technical expertise.
The new report highlights the product and outlines ABC's technical expertise.

skill set
Another way I have heard this. Usually applied to individuals, but what is a company but an assemblage of individuals?

([wide] range of) expertise
Ich frage mich gerade, ob das "Profil" hier nicht ganz wegfallen kann (mit der Alternative "[wide] range of expertise").
Daher mein Vorschlag mit Alternative in []:
The new report underscores/underlines/emphasises/highlights ABC's product and application expertise [(wide) range of product and application expertise].

Noch ein Gedanke: Wenn Du nur "expertise" verwendest, könntest Du davor noch "extensive" oder "comprehensive" einfügen:
The new report underscores/underlines/emphasises/highlights ABC's extensive [comprehensive] product and application expertise.

: prefer"expertise profile" (or competency profile),don't think "wide range of expertise" would work here, simply "expertise" might represent the most eleg. of all sol's//not my fav.,but could work: http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/eval/stud_etud/Compcontext_e.asp
