truth cannot capture reality

synonymic to 'master' but also appropriate, I would also say 'reveal'

agree Henry Schroeder : better than the literal translation

Without...truth cannot be realized

Obviously, this has two meanings in English. I think, nevertheless, it's the best translation .

Additional note: ideals are realized. That's the sense in which "realized" is used in this instance.
Peer comment(s):

agree Alexandra Goldburt : I'm with Judith. I don't think literate translation will work here, whichever synonim of "master" you select. Our job is to capture the meaning, not words, and I think Judith captured perfectly what Solovyov meant here.

Thank you, Alexandra. I agree. Anything else sounds peculiar and isn't very clear.
agree Anton Kunin : I'd go along with this translation.

Thank you, Anton.
agree Dr Davies (X) : Could not agree more. The phrase means not that truth is coming to its senses and 'masters' or 'gets a grip on' reality, but becomes that reality. We have the luxury of the full sentence and must use this, not translate bits in isolation.

Thank you, Dr Davies. I'm with you, of course.
