Does anyone have a neat way to translate the above phrase and others like it into English. This particular example is taken from a passage that talks about the scenic location of a factory! It seems to me to be rather Japanese to describe a location as being one of the best out of a specified number in a particular area, so how can this be rendered in English without sounding odd? I sometimes wonder whether a much freer translation would be more meaningful to English readers, most of whom would be unfamiliar with the area being talked about anyway, and would also sound more natural. What are the thoughts of others on this?

Some of well-known ones could be specifically mentioned, but I think it is too much to be "accurate" in this case especially because it does not seem to have much to do with the plant. Maybe something like this:

By the way, do you know if it is Wajiki Line or Wajiki Rhine. I don't know... but I I know that a well-known 日本ライン is Rhine, not line (I used to think it was "line" until I biked along it and saw a sign in English. It is named after a German river. I am guessing that this Wajiki Rhine is named after 日本ライン).

I think in this particular sentence the focus is upon the second part, while the first one just emphasizes it and you don't need to translate the details. I therefore would translate it as "Moreover, being located near Wajiki Rhine (mountain stream), one of the scenic beauties in Tokushima Prefecture, the plant puts efforts into environmental sustainability."

You know the Japanese are more keen on their number rankings than we are, but less interested in who actually promulgated 'the top 18 enka', etc. So I think you could leave it as 'one of the the region's top environmental treasures' without being too lyrical
