Je ne vois pas bien comment rendre cette tournure en français sans que cela soit trop littéral.
C'est un homme qui parle d'un de ses amis, soldat, mort au combat.

"On" = c'est un ami qui parle, peut-être pourrait-on utiliser un ton plus colloquial.

en parlant d'un militaire mort au combat
Il mérite d’être remémoré comme tel: un extraordinaire battant
Comme tel= allège la phrase et pointe à une évidence: ce qu'il était
Un battant est une personne combative ( moralement) et peut être employé à double sens pour un soldat

Si cet ami parle devant le cercueil au moment de faire ses adieux, je crois qu'il dirait qc comme : Il avait du cran et son courage restera à jamais gravé dans nos mémoires (et dans nos coeurs).
