German term or phrase: Erkenntnisgrundlage
Wichtig bei allen Entscheidungen sind belastbare Daten- und Erkenntnisgrundlagen.

I am looking for a way to translate both "Daten- und Erkenntnisgrundlagen" without it sounding awkward.

Thanks!

English translation:knowledge base
Explanation:
Along the lines of Paul's "foundation" - I'd translate this as "it is crucial that all decisions/decision-making processes be based on a sound/robust (and reliable) data and knowledge base".

All the answers were good. I ended up rephrasing the whole sentence but your input was helpful. Thank you.

disagree  Kim Metzger: Erkenntnis is knowledge. "a ground for insight"? "a basis to grasp"?

foundation of knowledge

Explanation:
I think a straight translation would work fine here.

For all decisions it is important to have strong foundations of data and knowledge.

Instead of "strong" you could write "firm" or even "reliable."

(Reliable data and) robust evidence ...

Explanation:
... are key to all decision-making processes.

All decisions must be based on/underpinned by reliable data and robust evidence.

Certainly room for improvement, but you get the general idea. Whether you start with "decisions" or put it at the end really depends on what the next sentence says.
