Not a question of 'like to' in my case Aug 27, 2016

It's essential that I learn to speak Spanish fluently, since I live in Spain. I doubt I'll ever be able to use it as a source language but it's shameful for a translator to have such a low level in their country's language.

All of 'em Aug 27, 2016

It'd be kinda cool to be able to talk to anyone anywhere about anything.

I hate being places where I can't speaka the local lingo.

Which is why all you minority peeps should just learn English.

Life on Earth would be so much easier.

More specifically I would love to speak Norwegian and Danish but I'm not sure it's possible to speak Norwegian, Danish and Swedish as separate languages.

Continental Portuguese Aug 27, 2016

I'm going to Portugal next month to start my first PhD semester and I'll need to use my very limited Portuguese to get around and to listen to some of the lectures.

Good thing I am allowed to write my homework in English and Spanish, though. But mastering Portuguese would be a cool thing.

Aside from the fact that I would really love to learn each and every language here on this planet, I'd like to learn Diné (Navajo) and continue my studies of Salish.

Italian, Slovenian, Welsh and Esperanto Aug 27, 2016

My first priority would be to take up Italian again, I studied it for two years. I feel this would give more job openings in the translation field. (I studied French at school but 'j'ai forgettait tout' so Italian would be easier).
Other languages I have toyed with:
Slovenian - Slovenia is a beautiful country, definitely on my wish list. However, the grammar is a challenge, especially with the dual form.

Slovenian - Slovenia is a beautiful country, definitely on my wish list. However, the grammar is a challenge, especially with the dual form.
Welsh - My mother was Welsh, born near Pontypridd. I can say 'Cymru am byth' already and I can also pronounce LLANFAIRPWLLGWYNGYLLGOGERYCHWYRNDROBWLLLLANTYSILIOGOGOGOCH (the longest place name in the world, in North Wales - you can get an idea how to say it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BXKsQ2nbno)
Esperanto - An international language, good for world peace and understanding. Not much of a market for translation EnglishEsperanto though.

Arabic Aug 27, 2016

I have been interested in it for many years, but have only taken two classes so far. I couldn't continue because I just did not have enough time. It is soooo difficult, though. It also seems like two languages really because of the modern standard version versus dialects.

One reason why I like it is because it seems poetic and colorful to me.

Someday....

Many, as a matter of fact Aug 27, 2016

But I stopped studying the "other" languages (the ones I don't work with) many years ago, and never resumed my studies. I'm not sure I ever will, although I would like to.

All of them. Aug 28, 2016

Including Klingon.

I don't think I'm likely to live long enough to learn them all. For now, I would cheerfully settle for French and Hebrew.

I like a challenge. It would be commercially useful as well, but I think it is too late for me to get up to professional proficiency.

I could speak German and French very well, but when I moved to England I did not use them so after 16 years I can understand something, I can say something simple, but I would like to speak both languages again.

Latin and classical Greek Aug 28, 2016

Yes, dead languages!

I studied Latin for seven years and classical Greek for four and could read almost everything without the aid of a dictionary by the time I went to Uni and then proceeded to forget them both. Such a waste! You forget languages because you fail to speak them.

So much to learn and do, and so little time in which to do it. Sigh.....
