This applies both to the translators whom I studied with at university and who are now my colleagues as well as to those I have met through ProZ.com. I've had the pleasure and privilege of attending several powwows and a regional conference, where I met many translators who I now consider to be my friends. And of course, fellow translators are enriching in more ways than one. So I don't understand why anyone would be wary of their colleagues. All the best from Montevideo,... Both enriching (which I voted), but also friendly in most of the cases. I developed a nice friendship with a few of my local colleagues, and not only do we share personal experience, but also a good time every once in a while! Cheers to all my friendly colleagues | | | ooh, aren't we a nice bunch! | Oct 29, 2008 |
I voted "friendly", but it was a close call between that and "enriching". it's good to see that (so far at least) the overwhelming majority of us see our relationships with fellow translators in a positive light.

Other than "uninteresting/useless", it would be possible to put one translator into all the categories. | | | andres-larsen Venezuela Local time: 12:05 Spanish to English + ... competitive rather than enriching and friendly | Oct 29, 2008 |
it might be enriching as well as friendly, but above all it definitely is competitive, all other things considered | | | One person could fit into several categories! | Oct 29, 2008 |
Jack Doughty wrote: Other than "uninteresting/useless", it would be possible to put one translator into all the categories. I agree with Jack - it is possible for one person to be described as friendly + competitive +...+... Friendly and competitive are not mutually exclusive, are they? But let us face it - there are also collagues around whom one has to be wary of and keep at "an arms' distance" | | | Erzsébet Czopyk Hungary Local time: 18:05 Member (2006) Russian to Hungarian + ... SITE LOCALIZER definitely enriching | Oct 29, 2008 |
I learn a lot from my translator colleagues and I just love them. We have a friendly nest of night owls If anything bad happens in the company, I can share my problems with my colleagues and if any bad happens to them, they know (and I always let them know) I am ready for help. I think my company is far more for us than a simple business relationship.

So OK, maybe I'm a leech (aside from a parrot), but I always find something to learn from my colleagues. I'm friendly with most, but all of them enrich me. (Sometimes, whether we like it or not) | | | Odile Breuvart United Kingdom Local time: 17:05 Member English to French + ... other translators ? | Oct 29, 2008 |
Actually, I hardly know any translators at all! Most of my friends and colleagues are not translators, I happen to have more friends amongst other categories of workers. By its nature, translation work is a job that suits an individual like me, independent and casual. Even though I admit I'd be happy to count many translators amongst my friends. | | | Wary, Uninteresting / Useless? | Oct 29, 2008 |
It would be interesting to hear someone who voted for these options elaborate. Cecilia
Someone who voted "wary" is, almost by definition, unlikely to be very forthcoming on the topic. And that is all you're getting out of me

I learn a lot from many others who are, by the way, very friendly! | | | Williamson United Kingdom Local time: 17:05 Flemish to English + ... Depends upon the character of the person | Oct 30, 2008 |
Translation is mostly an egocentric profession without life feed-back from the work-environment. Hence some are very competitive: Look how good "I" am and look how bad the "others" are. Others are friendly, helpful and receptive.
