But there are only 390 respondents so far. Let's hope the rest are fiddling around replacing graphics cards, adding RAM or doing something to cool those mainframe valves down.

Is your PC pretty much like Trigger's (ex-Only Fools and Horses) broom that he got a medal for as he had had it for years (20 or so), even though the handle and head had been changed over and over again?

I keep upgrading my hardware regularly, sometimes 'cos I LOVE the features offered by a new component, sometimes because my poor EDGAR (yes, that's been my computer's - actually computers' - name for years now) can't keep up with my irregular hours of work and a day having more than 24 hours, so occasionally some of its decrepit parts need be amputated and replaced.
I agree with Steven's remark on "throw-away society".
And I remember the triple R's (hmm...in the 80's it was the triple H that kept me busy):
Reduce - Reuse - Recycle.
We could try to be a "give-away society" - somebody can use our old translation HW buddies - at least the IT repair shop next door seems to be always glad when I hand them a monitor or a card. ▲ Collapse

My PC is probably 5 years old so could really do with replacing. It was a hybrid machine, built by my dad, to start off with, and I have replaced lots of parts - upgraded RAM, new hard drive, graphics card, two monitors, lots of extra bits and bobs. I think the only original parts are the motherboard and the floppy disk drive It still works but is now somewhat crippled by the processor's speed - it takes forever to load a PPT presentation in TagEditor.
I wouldn't want to throw the whole lot away and start again (if only because of the investment that has gone into still perfectly usable and up-to-date parts) but am not sure the old stuff would be compatible with a new motherboard. Still, there's always Freecycle so I don't actually have to throw any of it away.
Thankfully I have a high-powered year-old laptop which will do most of the grunt work.

I was quite surprised to see the results. Aren't we always complaining about rates and income? That doesn't prevent us from investing in new hardware, it seems...
My newest computer is a PC laptop of 2,5 years old, which I still think of as 'new'. I bought it to run some CAT tools and accompany my desktop computer, a Mac mini of 4 years old.

Although the one I use most is about 6 or 7 years old. I upgraded it a couple of years ago but I'm going to have to replace it soon - I need some more RAM but haven't been able to find anywhere that can source it (although admittedly I haven't tried that hard). It's also really irritating because all the USB drives are in the back and it's a pain to fiddle round trying to plug things in. I have a laptop 2 yrs old but do most stuff on a 4yrs old desktop machine. I'm trying to find the courage to switch, since the laptop has a dual core processor and is mcuh faster, and it handles big files better. But all my applications are on the desktop (althopugh most also loaded on the laptop) and my UPS and external backup hard disk are linked to my desktop machine- not to mention migrating my e-mail etc.
I bought a 7-port USB 2 hub for 35 euros - great value as it gives my laptop a total of 10 USB ports. Marie Helene should get one, although her machine may not handle USB 2 speeds.

Though I actually "traded my old one in" (sold it to an old computer dealer) - for about 2,000 Indian Rupees (of which I got Rs 1,200 for the monitor and Rs 800 for the CPU which was then about 8 years old) - cost of my new desktop + LCD screen + Windows Vista was about 40,000 Indian Rupees.
One of the reasons which compelled me to do so was that the old mahine ran on Windows 98 - and while one can keep upgrading hardware and software, there is a limit beyond which it is neither cost - effective nor even practical. Most of the software one needs to use - latest CAT tools included - require newer operating systems.

.. my last present I got was a small and beautiful mini- laptop. Very useful for interpreting jobs!
The computer I mostly use is a 3,5 year old laptop, the best investment ever as I am every day working with it.

I have two houses, my main residence and a house at the beach in Guarujá, São Paulo. Since I have to be able to work at both houses I need reliable computers at both places. Therefore I have an investment plan to buy a new computer every two to three years. The new one stays at my main residence and I take the "old" one to my beach house. The computer I have at my main residence is now just a little over 2 yrs old. When I bought it Windows Vista hadn't been launched yet and so here in Brazil m... I bought one with 1Gb of memory and everybody thought I was crazy. Three months later Windows Vista was launched and the minimum amount of memory automatically jumped to 1Gb. Now my computer at my beach house (with 512Kb of memory) is sooo slow that I am looking to replace it. The new one that I am looking at is a quad core with 4 Gb of Ram. So in the end, my dual core with 1Gb of Ram will soon be too slow.

While it's a shame that we dispose of things so cavalierly, I think a lot of the fault resides with the computer manufacturers. As someone already mentioned, software always seems to need the most recent operating systems to function well. In the case of my computer purchase, my old laptop was 5 years old and had slowed down a lot (even though I don't run many programs at at all on it). So, when the screen gave out and I was told that it would probably cost $300-$350 to fix it, I didn't think it was worth investing that much in a computer that probably wouldn't last much longer anyway. So, even though it was a difficult time for me to spend the money, I went out and bought a new computer. How come my parents' dishwasher worked from the time they bought their house until the house was sold 33 years later, but Gateway can't make a laptop screen that will last more than 5 years?
