Resolutions or a Business Plan? Dec 29, 2008

NO. Nobody keep a New Year's resolution (do they?).
Now, a business plan ... I haven't done one of these either.
I wonder what the year will bring
Happy New Year to ProZ-ers everywhere.

Better bookkeeping Dec 29, 2008

No more rudimentary Excel spreadsheets. I even downloaded the free version of Quickbooks. I am plain inept number-wise; I need to track my invoices and payments better.

My resolution: get a "round tuit" Dec 29, 2008

I have one constant resolution; it isn’t just for the New Year. I want to get a “round tuit”.

It would actually be quite a handy thing in my professional and personal life. If I got a “round tuit”, I´d do so much more work, and be more constant at studying new areas in my profession, exercising, eating right, etc.

I currently use Wordfast at a simple level and it’s a huge time and work saver, but as soon as I get a “round tuit”, I’m going to learn to

I currently use Wordfast at a simple level and it’s a huge time and work saver, but as soon as I get a “round tuit”, I’m going to learn to use its more advanced features.

I should probably stop writing and get back to work, but I guess I will when I get a “round tuit”.

Happy Holidays

"Work time" management Dec 29, 2008

I am planning on separating my "work time" and my "free time" a little better, this year. Being freelancing at home, I sometimes feel that I am constantly in "work mode".
I will try to have official days off, though it is tempting to use that time to work, if I am running behind on schedule...
I will tell you next year if my resolution worked!

Get ATA certification and improve bookkeeping Dec 29, 2008

I'm planning on taking the ATA test this coming year. It's been in my mind for some time now, and I've finally made the decision.

I'll also start using TO3000, which we bought during 2008 but did not implement yet.

And this is not a resolution, but a constant striving: getting better clients that pay higher rates.

Take care,
Andrés

Housekeeping, Bookkeeping, Exercising ... you name it Dec 29, 2008

Well, I have to 'tidy up' my office, I have to rennovate the garden, I have to improve my accounting, I should do more exercise, I should have a better diet ....
My New Year's Resolution is to do the best I can. Above all, spend more time with my wife.

Happy 2009 to all of you.

Nigel:)

Getting a "round tuit" Dec 29, 2008

I said no, because, ever optimistic, I hope that I will have sorted out my paperwork before the end of 2008. The system of bunging everything into my handbag and thence, once properly crumpled, into a series of plastic carrier bags, just won't do. So today, dear John Cutler, and friends, I would like to point out that I am getting a "round tuit"... Long pause while I polish my halo...

So today, dear John Cutler, and friends, I would like to point out that I am getting a "round tuit"... Long pause while I polish my halo...

Several hours later: Well, I polished my halo for a while, had a stroll up and down the corridor, chatted far longer than was necessary with a supplier (he must think I've undergone a complete character change since I am normally in such a rush), stared at Proz as it froze for a while.... and now it's time to go home, and I'm not even near half way through it. Anyone got a special use for semi-used envelopes, by the way? I find it so difficult to chuck things in the recycling bin when there might be a way of reusing them.

But here is the good news, to encourage us all to get a "round tuit": I found 230€ in one of those envelopes! Hope this is a sign of how life is going to be next year!

Felices fiestas everyone - all the best for 2009.

A tighter rein on late payers Dec 29, 2008

In 2008, business were relatively good, however fraught with just too many clients paying too late. I spent too much time reading/listening to excuses and explanations on why they needed the job finished so quickly, recognition that I delivered well before the deadline, but they could not keep their part of the deal because another client on another job, that had nothing to do with me... had not paid them yet.

The really good ones remained good as always. They'll continue enjoying my promptness.

The others will possibly face a 20% increase in rates... but will also have a 20% discount for payment on time.

"Round tuits" Dec 29, 2008

I admit, I had to google it to understand what you were talking about... then again, it took me a while to get the "Lerts have more fun" joke when I first heard it

Anyhow.. resolutions?? None. Zero. Zilch. I had a couple last year but fate decided to make me it's... plaything (not to use the "b" word) ... so I didn't get around to fulfilling them due to circumstances beyond my grasp. I'll play it by ear this time... See more

As for a business plan? Increasing my rates.

Greetings!!

Andrea

More On MY Terms/Will Say "No" More Often Dec 29, 2008

Last September, I had a medical setback because I was trying to satisfy too many clients, all at the same time. Since I don't want to experience permanent debilitation occasioned by too much stress, and since I have several regular clients who seem to be understandng about such matters, I often say "no" now to PM's who deluge me with one frantic e-mail after another to take on an "urgent" project.

Everything I take on now is based on my way, in my own time. The final product always

Everything I take on now is based on my way, in my own time. The final product always turns out better under those circumstances, anyway.
