Why would they need translators otherwise?

Edit: I was being playful. Does writing mean putting down new concepts/ideas or putting down something that has never been written before?

Having an article published in the parish magazine or the journal of an old comrades' association is a far cry from having one published in the national press or a reputable scientific journal. I have had a few published in the first category but not in the second.

I was a scientist (a miserable one once upon the time, so yes, few of my miserable papers were published.

In a special interest magazine for the advertising, publishing and printing industry.
Mind you - I am not a native speaker. I paid a ghost writer to make it sound fine. The result: Some advertising association contacted me, if I could please speak during a forum at some award ceremony in New York. I declined. I have ghost writers but no ghost speakers.

I got where I am by writing. I used to be a journalist, writer and literary magazine editor, conference proceedings editor, researcher... maybe that's what you'd call "all in a day's work"? (Sigh).

... but I can't remember what the most recent was about, exactly how long ago or where it was published!
However, much earlier, in my university years, when I visited soviet Russia as part of my degree course in 1982, I managed to record interviews with 2 of the country's top rock bands (Machina Vremeni and Gunnar Krapps) and tried to sell the articles to the NME in London on the way home. They said the style was "too touristy" (they were right, I was after all really just chronicling my s... Folks, the original question I submitted was "have you ever been published (NOT translation) in your native language?" For example, an article, fiction etc....
They`ve taken away some of the original alternatives I placed like "working on it", "would like to in the future", etc.
The thrust of my question was to satisfy my curiosity about how many translators are also budding/frustrated writers, like me!
Naughty ProZ, confusing everybody like that.

You are not alone Mark in two counts, here's two points I would like to make.
Point One:
I am a relatively frequent poll suggestor, at least used to.
When mine were "published" here they were, much to my chagrin, frequently altered.
Sometimes it was verbatim, but it appeared here by someone else's name.
Since poll suggestion is, once sent, it evapolates without trace, so I do not have evidence to warrant my claim, but at least that's my perception and experience, if not factual from ProZ viewpoint.
Point two:
I know they cut your original suggestion short, for the reason of space restriction.
I would like to suggest this policy need to change. Relative length for clarification should be permited.
Otherwise, things are just repetitions ---- which is what it is now.
Old questions on same subject over and over again (this may explain what I said earlier, namely my suggestion appeared under someone else's name is actually suggested by that person, and due to the restriction, the editor altered it to wording she/he heard from someone else).
By the way, yes I have published six books and numerous articles on newpaper and magazines (excluding my own website). I am a "frustrated writer" who cannot make living by writing, but I am doing fairly well in translating.

Like many other colleagues (Evonymus, Lucia C, Parrot,...), I am 'also' a translator. I too have had some research papers published; moreover I was the editor of a technical journal and have also published several articles related to my field at that time (metal finishing, electroplating) ... and have also managed to get a few of my 'popular' articles pulished as well.

I am working for a software company and translation is only part of the job, so I am often involved with answering RFIs for customers etc.
What I am proud of is actually having authored an inverview with our customers that was published in an industry magazine. The clients were only too happy to participate as long as they did not have to do any real work. At first I had severe writer's block, but then it was quite exhilirating, because they just about signed off everything I wrote... At first I had severe writer's block, but then it was quite exhilirating, because they just about signed off everything I wrote and the whole exercise was a huge success. And since it had to be signed off by the various non-German head offices, I was editing simultaneously in two versions. And now we are giving every prospect a copy of that article...
We are currently also producing a factsheet on German functionality for one of our systems. I authored it in English (so our product center and markting department in the UK could sign off) and then did the translation to German. The weird thing was, the people involved on the German side signed off the English version and now they are all editing the German translation with new twists and turns so that I'll have to revise the English version after the German factsheet is printed (I'm sure the UK people will not have any objections...). Still quite a good feeling, but not such a high as the first time around.
Bottom line - It is amazing what you can get away with when you submit a full text instead of aksing for input! ▲ Collapse
