More holidays, but work goes along as well. Plan in the same way as when I am at home because I am fortunate that all my relatives live in holiday destinations which makes everything easier.

I'd say about the same, but in a different way.
In France, the legal holiday for employees is 5 weeks per year. When I was an employée, I would typically take 3 weeks + 2 x 1 week in the year.
Now over a bit more than 2 years freelancing, I took 2 x 3 weeks, 1 x 1 week, 1 x 10 days, plus a couple of days off here and there.So I think the result is about the same.

My husband, working as an employee, is granted 30 vacation days per year, the same amount I used to be allowed back in the days when I was employed. Since I do not fancy the idea of going anywhere alone, I adapt my time off to my husband's vacation.

... some less. Always to go somewhere, and never taking any work along. The highest total was 2005 with 67 days, but not all at once. The lowest total was 2008 with 22 days. But I do work nearly every week-end.

As I never work fulltime in any company, I am start being freelance since I was a University student in the UK, yet always takes days off to there and then for at least every three months a trip (1-3 weeks off). However, I usually take my Laptop with me every time and everywhere I go. So, Sometime, I accept jobs during the vacation too, but rarely as I'm tring to tell my clients that I'm away and willonly take an urgent job, which it usually work. I take more holidays, but my workdays are longer. I regularly work evenings and sometimes weekends to compensate for my time off during the year. A great way to spend more time with my children during their holidays!

Holidays are just one day for us in the USA (such as the 4th of July), but vacation... now, that's a different story. Yes, being a freelancer I take advantage of being the owner of my time and on a number of occasions I have absented myself for periods of up to six weeks at a time. However, I always accept work while I am away. If a client needs something, they get it. I usually tell clients I will be traveling so I might not be as fast as normal, and they are aware that I sometimes come and go.
On the other hand, when a lot of work comes in I do marathon sessions to get it out. I consider myself semi-retired with all the privileges thereunto appertaining, and I can make a good income from this work while actually working no more than half-time. ▲ Collapse

I think i take about the same amount of vacation time as when I was employed. In Finland you get 5 weeks off per year and I would say I take roughly the same amount now when I work for myself.
The difference is that when I was employed I would take 4 weeks in summer and 1 week in winter but now I spread the times more evenly throughout the year which also means I travel more.

In the UK military and then police, I always had generous holiday time, remunerated in full, and flexibility over when to take it. Actually Sussex Police let me take a year off, which was how I ended up living in Brazil, another story..........
I taught at an English school here for 5 years so had to go on holiday at fixed times, with the rest of the country - crowded places, tripled prices etc.
Now with a bit of time management I can slip away off-season - travel for ... I am basically a teacher of English, have been translating part-time since 1987, for banks,
universities, etc. It really doesn't make any change for me, it's not my main source of income.

I voted more, as I think I go away more often since being a freelancer. I do sometimes take work with me, however, so it kind of balances out. I'm also still part-time employed, so I'm not a typical freelancer and to go away for more than a long weekend I'm limited by my company's holiday policy.
