My degree is in Economics and when I started translating part-time (I went full-time some years later) there were no translation courses in Portugal (the country where my target language is spoken) so I just jumped into it and started practicing and that’s what I have been doing since. I lived from 1985 till 2016 in Belgium (the country where one of my source languages is spoken). I have been in Portugal since 2016 and I have no intention of leaving again.

Started at university, and a translation professor gave me extra mentoring there. What I learned while preparing for the certification exam was valuable.

I receive instructions by an email from PJ managers, or those instructions are provided by platforms such as Coach following each project.

We had translation tests at university as part of the degree in Modern Languages.
After that, you did whatever you wanted with your degree, most went into teaching.
I went to teach English in Italy where the school often had requests for translations.
I left teaching when my son was born, but kept up the translating work, gradually acquiring clients.
Rather than receiving "instruction" I was thrown in at the deep end and had to get on with it.

I have a business and IT degree and I simply started translating after decades in the IT business where I had to deal with English texts anyway on a daily basis.

A If you mean "where did I study translation?" this was at the University of Life.

"translation instruction" means "an instruction to translate",
So whoever posed the question is not well-instructed in translation.

... have gone on to study, not only just about every aspect of the 4 foreign languages I work from, including translation, but other fields, at something like 8 colleges and universities. which is good for developing the specialty areas one is interested in, too.

Only after reading the poll discussion I understood what was the question about.

Like others, I found it difficult to answer this question because my education was only tangentially related to translation. I majored in languages starting in high school and ended up studying linguistics in graduate school. My education in languages and linguistics has been the foundation of my career, but I only had one course in translation as such.

When I studied languages at school, we had to translate short passages both to and from English. The same when I studied for my degree in modern languages at university (French and Russian). Funnily enough, I only studied Spanish in a beginner class as a 'filler' in my final year, but now it is my main working source language. Apart from that, I have had no formal translation instruction.
