Except for my long-standing customer: I have been translating for him user manuals for professional styling tools and kitchen utensils and occasionally the job consists of just adding one or two new sentences to an old text. As he is a very regular client (almost every month) and always pays the day after receiving my invoice, I do it gladly and may not charge at all. | | |

Had to vote other because the answer is sometimes, neither rarely nor often. Mostly for websites, which of course are often a work in constant progress. Or a press release gets a couple of minor alterations. | |

I almost voted 'often', but that is not really true. The client reads the translation and their own text and thinks of a detail that is missing or needs to be clarified. Something may have happened after the original text was sent, which requires a comment. There can be may reasons. The strange thing is that they seem to come in bunches, even though the different clients have no connection with each other. Several times, when I have been really busy already... Several times, when I have been really busy already, three clients came one after the other with a request for 'just another 100 words, please, ASAP, because we needed them yesterday!' It is hard to say no, because it will take time to find another translator and send the whole story, which I already know, but it interrupts my workflow and takes a little time to set up the job, check the details, and deliver it... Some clients resend a 20 page-text translated 3 weeks before, with 10 words changed in 6 different pages and expect no to vbe charged (or to be charged only for these 10 words!!) Two days ago they queried a sentence that made no sense when translated literally, so I assembled it in a different way so that it did make sense. The end user queried the absence of a particular phrase, saying that without that phrase, the translation "had no meaning". Out of sheer bloodymindedness I translated it literally. The result was an English sentence that made no sense, and that nobody would understand. I sent it off, and there were no more complaints. It's very annoying when somebody at the other end, who has no real command of English, takes it upon themselves to make corrections to the work of a native English speaker.
