This thread is part of the Translator playground: a place for translators to have fun, to network, to learn, and to hone their translation or linguistic skills. See the announcement here.

Need a quick break from work? In this area translators and language professionals can play games and share material which do not fit in other categories within the Translator playground.

This article reports on the results of a survey to determine trends in pet ownership as it relates to certain professions, annual salaries, and level of job satisfaction. Here are some experts:

The survey polled a limited sampling of 2,300 full-time employees in the U.S. who are also pet owners.

Survey results indicate that:

Employees in top level positions (CEOs or senior vice presidents) are primarily dog owners.

Snake and other reptile owners are among the highest paid workers, earning six figure salaries.

Bird owners are most likely to be satisfied with their jobs.

When it comes to career choices, the survey revealed some interesting trends:

Entertainers, IT professionals, those in the military, nurses and professors are more likely dog owners.

Doctors, lab techs, machine operators, personal caretakers and realtors tend to have cats as pets.

People working in the financial field, hotel and leisure industry, in farming/fishing/forestry careers, human resources and transportation are more likely to own fish.

Editors and writers, engineers, marketing and PR professionals, law enforcement officers and social workers prefer reptiles as pets.

Bird owners are found in administrative jobs, advertising, construction and sales.

I wonder in which category translators/interpreters would be? Would we be in the "reptiles" trend the same as editors and writers? I don't think so...

It would be fun to find out if there is a kind of pet most commonly owned by language service providers... any ideas?

CATs would be a sound guess, right?

Why not? Mox and his turtle Mina spring to mind. But he does have a CAT, too. (http://mox.ingenierotraductor.com/p/characters.html)

no reptiles, but turtles are ok, and seeing an occasional lizard (they eat bugs) Jun 11, 2015

First of all, I thought this was going to be about what your pets say/think about you, or rather, what we think that they think about us!

No indoor animals.

I've enjoyed having dogs, cats (good mousers in the barn), chickens, Muskogee ducks, goats, and lambs. I was also given two geese (Fred and Barney) because the previous owners didn't like them having loud arguments at night under their bedroom window! Ha!

I've enjoyed having dogs, cats (good mousers in the barn), chickens, Muskogee ducks, goats, and lambs. I was also given two geese (Fred and Barney) because the previous owners didn't like them having loud arguments at night under their bedroom window! Ha!

One of the ducks (Snowy) would lightly peck at two of the wethers (neutered goats). I don't know if he was catching invisible bugs (he didn't even hardly touch their fur) or if he was playing. The goats would back up and sort of buck and head-butt at him. I don't know if they were annoyed or just playing.

One of the wethers (Coco) was wearing a dog collar when I received him, so I just left it on for convenience. But one day while inside I heard a ruckus. All the hens were cackling, the roosters crowing, the ducks quacking, the dogs barking, and the goats baahing (really, more like a Maa-aah). I ran to the door to see what was going on. Apparently during a pecking-butting "event," Snowy got one of his feet caught in Coco's collar. Coco was running back and forth across the field, and Snowy was flapping his wings, both of them trying to get loose from the other. It was quite a scene.

As I rushed to go rescue them, they managed to disengage. Nobody was injured, but I did remove the collar immediately.

It was scary at the moment, but after seeing that they were ok, it's funny.

Animals and their antics are fun and relaxing to watch. It's wonderful when they let you love them, too.

but I always have my buddies beside me, whether it be the now deceased and much missed lab mixes or the current mutt that we now have, another rescue dog that could not be rejected, smartest dog I've ever had actually

Rabbit-minder Sep 12, 2015

Now, that my kids are on holidays, I am a rabbit- and cats-minder.
If it were for my own choice, it would be definitely a snake or a python.
But at the time, my mom told: it's me or the snake. Thus, my 6-figure earnings prospect was destroyed.
