Yesterday I introduced ProZ.com's new pro bono project. As I pointed out, there are pro bono initiatives within just about every profession. Everyone likes earning money, and to have their work valued. But nevertheless there are often cases in which we feel impelled to offer just a little work without reward.

Yesterday I introduced ProZ.com's new pro bono project. As I pointed out, there are pro bono initiatives within just about every profession. Everyone likes earning money, and to have their work valued. But nevertheless there are often cases in which we feel impelled to offer just a little work without reward.

Of course, the causes we select will be carefully chosen. Non-profits and NGOs doing important work, but without the budget to allocate to translation. Sectors might include the environment, women's rights, health, education, animal welfare, or even financial and legal documents for beneficiaries around the world.

ProZ.com will be taking no money from any of them. The entirely cashless aspect is an important element of this new project.

But why would you want to help, however worthy the cause?

If you're experienced, it might simply be a desire to promote a cause and help an organization spread their message. All our cities today are melting pots, and translation will always be a useful addition to any website of a non-profit cause. Or it might be a question of "giving back" or "paying it forward" (or whatever your phrase of choice is).

Equally, pro bono work also has much to offer professionals who are starting out and want to bolster their portfolio and gain some experience with a real client. Rather than practising on a random website, or copying something from Wikipedia, why not translate a text that will actually be used and benefit a cause at the same time?

And you never know… whether you’re an oldie or a newbie, your contacts with an organization staffed by young volunteers may one day turn into something more lucrative when one of them decides to take up a job at an enterprise. That’s not the reason you do voluntary work of course, but don’t rule out the effects of "positive karma".

Clearly it’s something that some of us will do alongside our commercial work, rather than instead of it. Giving an hour or two here or there, rather than being deluged with texts. That’ll be part of my job as project manager in the first phase of the project – to make sure that no one is overwhelmed.

Of course, some people will be uninterested in volunteering at all. Some will see it as “working for free” and dismiss it out of hand. That’s fine. Those aren’t the people the project it going to try to mobilize.

However, if this strikes a chord with you, and you feel you can help in some capacity, then do write to me at [email protected]. Start by visiting the Pro Bono landing page at https://go.proz.com/probono for a simple introduction to Phase One of the project, where we're gathering our first beneficiaries and volunteer translators…

We've already delivered our first translation this week. More on that soon...
