Hi,
it's been a long time that I'm searching for news about this topic and I thought to post something here. I'm sure someone will be able to help me in my search.
I graduated about three years ago in Finno-ugristic and, although I have a job now,my dream has always been to do a Phd in the same subject or in Linguistics, studying the processes of birth and death of languages.

Do you know how could I find a University supporting me in this dream and, better, something that I could do at home so that if , for example, the U is in the US, I can really do it?
I speak and write fluently Italian (NS), English, German and Finnish

Hi. In the US there's a linguistics department in many universities. With your undergradute degree you may apply for graduate study in linguistics, there are various forms of financial aid: scholarships, fellowships, teaching assistant (TA), research assistant (RA), etc, some aids are created for international students.

I don't have more detailed information, but I suggest you have a look at the site of LMU in Munich. Apart from the possibility to do a PhD at the Finno-Ugric department

* working knowledge in European academic languages (ideally three, at least two, one of them must be German; the knowledge of a non-European academic language is considered an advantage)

With your background in Finno-Ugritic languages and assuming you want to develop that background into a doctorate program, you might well try the
o Indiana University at Bloomington (IU reportedly has good-sized departments in Finno-Ugritic and Ural-Altaic languages)
o Univerity of Michigan at Ann Arbor
IU and UMI have strong and diverse/flexible faculties in those languages and major fields of linguistics.

Thank you all for your suggestions, it's been great to see that maybe I will be able to realize this project...
Maybe I haven't cleraly pointed out in my post that I'm looking for a program that I can do/follow as part-time and in distance learning mode. I'm living and working full-time in Brussels..so I don't want to leave the job and move to other countries...
