Aafter having replied to proz.com job posting http://www.proz.com/job/749450, a certain Nicola Amoruso asked me to translate a 6,000 words doc about cancer and immediately accepted my price and offered to pay by cheque. He claimed to have cancer too...
Here's what he wrote me after I asked for advance payment:

Here's what he wrote me after I asked for advance payment:
"Hello Sabine,
How are you doing and thank you for your understanding and kindness. I am happy to have you as my translator. The text is not in any way official but just for learning. I want you to start the translation, your full payment check will be send to you this week. You will deliver the translated text upon receipt of your payment check in order to meet up with the deadline .Kindly provide your information to issue out your payment.
Here is my information for the invoice
Name. AMORUSO NICOLA
Via S. Francesco Da Paola 67B
80058 Torre Annunziata
Italy
Kindly confirml your information to issue out your check payment.

This is a typical over-payment scam. Not only is payment by check suspicious from an unknown person, but the fact that he does or does not have cancer is completely irrelevant. Hopefully you sent it straight into File 13.

I saw a job posting here on proZ about a translation from German to English. It was not by the man whose name appears in the title of this thread but some guy from Sweden. I tried to verify his adress and found out that it does exist and apparently there is someone with that name registered under that adress in a small Swedish village.
So, how is this connected to the previous posts? The wording of your quoted email struck me. This is what I got:

The text he sent was a scientific paper in German. The text did not have major mistakes. I could not find the text via google, so I assume, this text in fact is a "real" scientific paper. Source unknown.

I had the Cape Town surgery thing too! You'd better forget about it. I guess they pick real addresses, as simple as that.
Yesterday I told them that they should refrain from contacting me and that I reported them to proz.com. Since then, no more answer...

The cancer surgery in Cape Town already should make everyone forget about starting a translation job. If that guy really lived in a country with a presumably good health care system, there would be no need to fly to South Africa for surgery.
Now that I am warned, I wonder if there is any way to find out the real identity of who is behind that or at least get some hint to that. But I guess, it rarely occurs that such scammers make a mistake pointing out who they are.
The IP address the email was sent from points to Russia, could be a proxy server but still, it's not from Sweden.
