It would have been a big mistake accepting this (strange) offer.

I got some suspicions when he accepted me to translate into German after having contacted me to translate into French/Spanish.
We had the following email exchange:

Get the payment address and sign it and cash it at your bank, there is a fee to cashing travelers check, all that is pay by me and not from your money.Then go to western union and transfer the differences, there is charges for that too, i am aware of all the charges so get it down, all charges are from the balance to send. I hopefully await your email when you are done and sometimes you might need to deposit the check for your assurance, that's not a problem just make sure you get back to me whit information.

I don't like to handle so much money.
I should propose you the following:
I cash two of the traveller checks received, which is about 30% of the agreed price and I return you the rest of the traveller checks by registered mail. You can then send me two more traveller checks once half of the work has been done and we shall see for the rest later. Please let me know whether I have to send the unused traveller checks to your address in Italy or to the address in Spain.

from my client that i need to pass to you asap. Please check your post
box or your mail to check if there is Travelers check among the mail
received today.
The Travelers check is an instant money at bank. Please be inform that
the American Express travelers check you will receive is cash able at
the BANKS so go to bank but you must follow the following instructions
before going to the bank.
*** IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS ****
*1*.The travelers check requires your signature on the 1st line...
Sign all the Travelers check upon receipt.
*2* Your full name will be on the second line.
*3* The third line is where you going to sign at the bank before the
cashier... this line is the only line you will attend to at the bank
the other line must be done before Heading for the bank
(countersign... You will have to sign that line at the bank where you
want to cash it, in front of the bank Cashier)
*4*. The forth line is the date. Nov/17/2010 .
NOTE. ALL CHARGES ARE TO BE DEDUCT FROM THE BALANCE, NOT FROM YOUR OWN MONEY.
As soon as you cash the money at bank, deduct your agreed amount which

I have received the same first message 3 days ago. It looked strange and not serious at all but I asked the details.

The sample was a part of a child educational book. Everything looked strange. Who is he? Is he the author of the book ? Is he a freelance translator ? In which language comb... He has a hotmail address in UK and his postal address is in Italy. His English is strange for a English man ... I had many questions and thought that it would be better to check his identity before talking on the price and other conditions. He even sent me a third message to ask me my quote.
