저는 과거에는 웹사이트를 제작하던 웹 에이전시로 출발을 했지만 다양한 기술 미디어 기술이 출현하며 우리가 살고 있는 공간의 디지털 미디어와 콘텐츠를 결합하는 방향으로 사업을 확장해 왔습니다.
지금 보시는 작품은 많은 사람들에게 디스트릭트라는 이름을 알리게 되었던 퍼블릭 미디어 아트 작품 ‘웨이브’입니다.
웨이브는 삼성동 코엑스에 설치된 대형 옥외 전광판에 많은 사람들이 향유할 수 있는 매력적인 공공 미술 작품을 선보임으로써 많은 분들께 사랑을 받았습니다.
특히 엘자로 꺾여 있는 평면의 전광판 화면에 아나모픽 일루전이라는 3D 영상 제작 기법을 통해 입체적인 작품을 선보임으로써 전 세계적으로 이러한 방식의 3D 영상들이 새롭게 등장하게 된 계기가 되기도 했죠.
저희는 2021년 여름에는 뉴욕 타임스퀘어에서도 또 다른 두 번의 공공 미술 프로젝트를 순차적으로 진행했습니다.
지금 보시는 워터풀 엔와이시는 타임스퀘어에서 세로로 가장 긴 높이 102 미터에 육박하는 옥외 전광판에서 가상의 폭포가 입체적으로 쏟아지는 모습을 표현한 공공 미술 작품입니다.
그리고 지금 보시는 웨일2는 타임스퀘어에서 가로로 가장 큰 전광판에서 물로 만들어진 고래가 거침없이 몰아치는 파도의 움직임에 맞춰 물 위에서 춤을 추는 모습을 표현한 공공 미술 작품입니다.
저희는 도심 한가운데에 위치한 대형 옥외 전광판은 그 주위를 지나다니는 사람들에게 비자발적으로 노출될 수밖에 없는 공공재적 성격이 있다고 판단했고 이러한 옥외 전광판의 공공재적 성격을 고려할 때 사람들이 보고 싶어할 만한 작품들이 노출되는 것이 좋겠다고 생각했습니다.
그리고 그 소재를 자연에서 찾아 보여줌으로써 도심 한가운데에서 많은 사람들이 안식과 위안을 얻어가길 바랐습니다.
팬더믹으로 인해서 이동의 제약이 있고 많이 지쳐있던 도심 속 사람들에게 저희의 이 세 번의 공공 미술 프로젝트는 많은 울림과 안식을 가져다주며 전 세계인으로부터 사랑을 받았습니다.
이런 옥외 전광판을 활용한 공공 미술 프로젝트들 이외에 저희는 저희가 만든 미디어 아트 작품을 활용해 전시관을 운영하는 사업도 진행을 하고 있는데요, 지금 보시고 계시는 몰입형 미디어 아트 전시관, 아르떼 뮤지엄이 바로 그것입니다.
이터널 네이처라는 콘셉트 하에 자연 속의 소재와 공간을 미디어로 재해석한 다양한 작품들이 전시되어 있는 공간이고요, 현재 제주, 여수, 강릉 세 곳에 전시관을 운영하고 있습니다.
감사하게도 아르떼 뮤지엄 역시 많은 관객들에게 사랑받고 있는데, 2020년 9월 말 처음 개관한 제주 아르떼 뮤지엄은 지금까지 벌써 백십만 명이 넘는 관객들이 다녀가셨고, 강릉, 여수 또한 하루에 수천 명씩 관객들이 방문해 주시며 해당 지역을 대표하는 핫 플레이스로 자리 잡아가고 있습니다.
지금까지 보셨던 저희 회사의 작품들은 실감 콘텐츠라는 기술로 구현된 작품들입니다.
실감 콘텐츠는 다른 말로는 실감 미디어 기술을 기반으로 만들어진 콘텐츠라고 설명을 할 수 있는데요, 실감 미디어 기술은 현실 세계를 가장 근접하게 재현하고자 하는 차세대 미디어로서 현재 사용하고 있는 미디어 기술보다 월등히 나은 표현과 표현력, 현실감 등을 제공하는 기술이라고 정의되고 있습니다.
좀 더 쉽고 직관적으로 말해서 사람들에게 보다 현실감 있는 가상의 경험을 제공해 줄 수 있는 미디어 기술이라고도 설명을 할 수 있는데요, 이런 실감 콘텐츠는 흔히 기술과 예술을 융합할 수 있는 도구로서 많은 주목을 받고 있습니다.
저희 디스트릭트도 저희 회사를 ‘아트 테크 팩토리’라고 또 다르게 정의를 하고 있는데요, 바로 이러한 실감 미디어 기술을 이용해 흔히 ‘미디어 아트’라고 불리는 일종의 예술 작품을 만드는 일을 하고 있다 보니까 기술과 예술을 융합하는 집단이라는 의미에서 이렇게 부르고 있는 거죠.
그런데 흔히 아트라고 하는 예술은 전통적인 회화나 조소와 같은 형태의 작품들로 많이들 인지하고 계실 텐데 이런 실감 미디어를 기반으로 한 미디어 아트 작품들을 과연 예술의 하나의 장르로 이야기할 수 있을까요? 즉, 미디어 아트도 예술이라고 할 수 있을까요?
이를 설명하기 위해서 우선 과거의 기술의 발전이 예술에 어떠한 변화를 만들어왔는지 사례들을 한번 살펴보겠습니다.
보통 예술은 그 시대를 살아가는 사람들의 생각과 사회의 변화에 영향을 많이 받습니다.
그리고 사람들의 생각과 사회의 변화는 기술의 발전에 영향을 받기 마련입니다.
그러다 보니까 기술의 발전은 예술에도 영향을 미치게 됩니다.
한국 사람들이 가장 좋아하는 서양 미술사의 사조가 인상주의라고 해요.
이런 인상주의는 새로운 기술의 발전으로 등장하게 됐다고 합니다.
원래 화가들은 채색을 위해서 필요한 물감이 너무 빨리 마르는 문제로 인해서 이 물감을 가지고 야외로 나가서 그림을 그리지 못하고 주로 실내에서 그림을 그릴 수밖에 없었다고 해요.
그런데 어느 날 이러한 물감이 마르지 않도록 튜브에 넣어서 보관할 수 있는 기술이 생겨나면서 그리고 산업 혁명으로 인해서 열차라는 새로운 교통 수단이 등장하면서 실내에서만 그림을 그릴 수 있었던 화가들이 이제 열차를 타고 교외로 나가 마르지 않는 튜브 물감을 이용해 광활한 자연의 풍경을 화폭에 담아낼 수 있게 되었다고 합니다.
사진의 발명도 기술의 발전이 예술의 변화를 가져온 대표적인 사례라고 하는데요, 사진이 발명되기 이전의 화가들은 눈에 보이는 장면을 잘 표현하는, 일종의 기능공의 역할을 가지고 있었다고 해요.
그런데 눈에 보이는 장면을 제 아무리 정밀하게 표현하는 화가라 하더라도 사진이 담아내는 정확한 모습을 따라가기에는 어려움이 있었겠죠.
그러다 보니까 사진이 발명된 이후부터는 사실적인 시각 표현을 추구하던 미술의 양식이 작가로서의 생각과 감정을 담아내면서 조금 더 추상적인 작품을 제작하는 것으로 변하게 됩니다.
19세기 후반에 입체파, 야수파, 초현실주의 등의 근대 미술의 등장과 20세기 현대 미술의 시작은 바로 이러한 사진의 발명이라는 기술의 변화가 예술에 영향을 미치는 또 하나의 대표적인 사례라고 설명할 수 있습니다.
이처럼 새로운 기술이 출현하며 기존의 기술이 사라질 때마다 사람들의 생각과 사회의 생활 방식에 있어서 많은 새로운 변화들이 촉발되고 예술 또한 새로운 향을 피우며 사람들에게 다가오게 됩니다.
저는 이런 의미에서 최근 새롭게 출현한 실감 콘텐츠 기술 또한 우리가 살아가고 있는 시대의 예술에 영향을 미치는 또 하나의 새로운 기술이 되지 않을까 생각합니다.
저는 실감 미디어 기술은 마치 인류가 사진이라는 새로운 시각 표현의 도구를 발견한 것처럼 우리 인류가 또 다른 시간 표현의 조작 도구를 발명한 것만큼의 가치가 있다고 보고 있습니다.
지금 영상으로 나오고 있는 작품을 한번 보시죠. 저희 디스트릭트가 아르떼 뮤지엄에서 전시하고 있는 ‘오로라’라는 작품입니다. 이 작품은 오로라가 밝게 빛나는 북유럽의 밤바다에 내가 와 있는 듯한 경험을 전달하는 작품입니다.
즉, 실감 콘텐츠는 그 어떤 예술의 표현 방식보다 사람들에게 직관적인 경험을 전달하게 해주는 좋은 수단이라고 보고 있고 이러한 특성 때문에 시각 예술을 보다 많은 대중이 쉽게 향유할 수 있도록 해주는 새로운 표현의 방식이라고 생각하고 있습니다.
따라서 이러한 실감 미디어 기술을 통해 탄생한 미디어 아트 역시 아마 빠른 시일 내에 동시대 미술을 대표하는 새로운 장르로 많은 사람들에게 사랑을 받을 것으로 보고 있습니다.
그리고 아마 앞으로 몇 년 정도 더 지나면 이런 실감 미디어 기술을 통한 표현 또한 더욱 발전할 것입니다.
그럼 아마 지금 보셨던 영상보다 더욱 더 현실감 높은 표현과 체험이 가능해 질 것이고, 이제 사람들은 현실 경험과 가상의 경험을 거의 무차별하게 느끼는 순간도 오게 될 것입니다.
그리고 이건 조금 전에 보셨던 이런 오프라인 공간에 구현된 몇 가지 사례에 그치는 게 아니라 가상 현실이나 증강 현실과 같이 이런 디바이스를 통해 체험하는 온라인에서의 경험에서도 더욱 고도화되게 될 것입니다.
그럼 이제 사람들은 집 안에 앉아서도 어떠한 가상의 경험도 실제 경험과 동일한 수준으로 향유할 수 있는 시대가 오게 되겠죠.
이미 최근에 메타버스라고 불리는 가상 공간에서 현실 세계에서의 생활과 동일한 방식의 사회적 관계를 형성하고 상거래를 하는 사례들까지 등장을 하고 있는데 이 또한 지금의 픽사 같은 수준으로 표현되는 이질적인 공간이 아니라 실제 우리가 살고 있는 세계와 시각적으로 거의 동일한 수준으로 구현될 날이 머지않았다고 보고 있습니다.
그리고 이 모든 것을 가능하게 하는 가장 근간이 되는 기술이 바로 실감 미디어 기술 혹은 실감 콘텐츠입니다.
지금까지 실감 콘텐츠 기술이 가지는 의미와 저희 회사에서 이러한 실감 콘텐츠를 활용해 선보였던 대표적인 작품들을 소개 드렸습니다.
감사하게도 최근에 저희 회사의 활동이 많은 분들께 주목을 받으면서 저희 디스트릭트를 마치 혜성같이 등장한 능력있는 디자인 회사인 것처럼 생각하시는 분들도 많이 계시는 것 같아요.
지금부터는 저와 저희 회사가 지금 이 순간까지 걸어오게 된 여정에 대해서 말씀드리려고 합니다.
제가 지금 강연을 하고 있는 이 TEDx의 주제가 사르다입니다.
사르다라는 단어는 직접적으로는 불에 태워 없애버리다라는 뜻이지만 어떤 것을 남김없이 없애버리다라는 이면의 뜻도 담고 있습니다.
저는 지금까지 저와 디스트릭트라는 회사가 걸어온 여정이 이 사르다라는 단어와 맞닿아 있는 지점이 많이 있다고 생각하는데요, 지금부터 그 얘기를 드려볼까 합니다.
저희 디스트릭트는 2004년에 창업된 회사예요.
창업 초기에는 주로 대기업들의 웹사이트를 디자인하며 매년 30%이상씩 성장하며 웹 에이전시로서는 가장 유명한 회사 중 하나로 자리매김했었죠.
그리고 저는 2007년 병역 특례 제도 중의 하나인 산업 기능 요원으로 이곳 디스트릭트에 입사하게 됩니다.
원래 학부에서 경제학을 전공하고 경영학과 대학원 시절에 공인 회계사 시험에 합격했던 저는 회계 법인에서 회계사로서 첫 사회 생활을 시작을 하고 우연한 기회에 군복무를 마치기 위해 이곳 디스트릭트에 입사하게 된 거죠.
사실 디자인의 디자도 모르던 비전공자였고 군복무를 위해 온 직장이었기 때문에 처음에는 당연히 의무 복무를 마치면 다시 회계 법인으로 돌아가려고 했어요.
그런데 2009년 6월 군복무를 마치던 시점에 같이 일하던 동료들이 일을 대하는 자세와 앞으로 더 커질 것만 같은 이러한 디지털 콘텐츠 시장에 대한 막연한 기대감을 안고 저는 회계 법인으로 돌아가지 않고 디스트릭트에 남아 새로운 커리어에 대한 도전을 해보기로 결정합니다.
그리고 제가 회사에 계속 남기로 결정했던 2009년부터 디스트릭트는 조금 전 설명 드렸던 실감 미디어 기술을 활용한 콘텐츠를 제작하는 것으로 사업의 방향을 변경하게 됩니다.
실감 콘텐츠라는 단어가 일반 대중에게 언급되기 거의 십 년 전부터였죠.
저희는 갈수록 새롭게 출현하는 디지털 미디어 기술의 변화와 이러한 디지털 미디어 기술에 접목할 수 있는 콘텐츠 제작 역량을 믿고 기존에 안정적으로 수익을 창출하던 웹 에이전시 사업을 과감히 버리고 새로운 도전을 시작하게 됩니다.
그리고 그땐 몰랐지만 그 시작이 그로부터 십 년의 어려운 시기를 맞이하게 된 발단이 되었습니다.
지금 보시는 영상은 디스트릭트가 2011년 세계 최초로 선보였던 디지털 미디어 파크인 라이브 파크의 모습입니다.
지금의 아르떼 뮤지엄을 포함한 전 세계적으로 많은 실내용 미디어 엔터테인먼트 시설이 나타나게 된 계기가 됐죠.
라이브 파크는 당시만 해도 너무나 혁신적인 시도로 높은 평가를 받으며 수많은 어워드를 수상하기도 했습니다.
하지만 이러한 실감 미디어의 개념이 일반 대중들에게는 너무 생소하던 시기였고 지금처럼 SNS를 통한 마케팅의 도움도 받지 못하면서 결과적으로 디스트릭트는 이 사업을 통해서 백억 원의 적자를 발생시키며 급격히 회사가 어려워지게 됩니다.
갑자기 회사가 어려운 상황이 됐지만 저희는 포기하지 않은 채 2015년에는 플레이 케이팝이라는 이름의 두 번째 미디어 엔터테인먼트 시설을 오픈하게 됩니다.
플레이 케이팝은 케이팝 스타들의 홀로그램 공연, 증강 현실을 활용한 체험 시설 등으로 구성된 실감형 엔터테인먼트 시설이었고 내국인보다는 제주에 많이 방문하는 중국인 관광객들을 타겟으로 오픈했던 시설이었어요.
그런데 이 상황 역시 2017년 중국과의 사드 문제로 중국인 관광객들이 더 이상 제주를 방문하지 못하면서 결국은 많은 손실을 남긴 채 2019년 문을 닫아야 했습니다.
그리고 이러한 두 번의 큰 투자의 실패를 극복하기 위해 2017년부터는 중국에 지사를 설립해서 본격적으로 중국 현지 사업을 진행했습니다만 이 역시 중국 고객사로부터 약속된 계약 대금을 제대로 회수하지 못하며 회사는 더욱더 어려운 상황에 놓이게 되죠.
저는 창업주들의 부탁으로 2016년 하반기부터 대표 이사에 취임하여 디스트릭트를 이끌기 시작했는데 아마 이때가 제 개인의 인생에서도 그리고 디스트릭트의 역사에서도 가장 어려웠던 몇 년의 시절이 아니었던가 싶습니다.
하지만 이런 어려운 상황에도 불구하고 저희 디스트릭트는 신념을 가지고 2019년 하반기부터 또 한 번의 새로운 도전을 진행하게 됩니다.
바로 앞서 설명드린 웨이브 아르떼 뮤지엄 프로젝트죠.
그리고 너무나 감사하게도 드디어 저희 디스트릭트의 결과물이 국내뿐만이 아니라 세계적으로도 인정받는 순간을 맞이하게 됩니다.
이로 인해 어려웠던 회사의 재정 상황이 2020년 하반기부터 급속도로 정상화되기 시작했고 작년부터는 아주 큰 성장 가도를 달리고 있습니다.
이런 지난 십여 년의 저희가 걸어온 길들이 어쩌면 사르다라는 단어가 가장 잘 어울리는 시간들이지 않았나 싶습니다.
저희는 개념조차 생소하던 2009년부터 실감 미디어 기술을 활용한 혁신적인 시도들을 계속 해 왔고 그 과정에서 정말 도망가고 싶을 만큼 큰 실패의 순간들도 몇 번 경험했지만 포기하지 않고 끝까지 한 길을 걸어갔던 것 같아요.
끝이 보이지 않는 컴컴한 터널 속을 손을 더듬으며 걷는 것 같은 기분이 든 적이 많았었는데 정말 우리의 가능성을 등불 삼아 우리가 가고자 하는 길을 묵묵히 걸어왔던 이 과정들이 남김없이 없애버릴 만큼 저의 시간과 노력을 사라왔던 여정이었던 것 같습니다.
그리고 지금 보시는 아르떼 뮤지엄에 전시된 또 다른 파도 작품에서도 이 파도 앞에 서 있는 저 사람의 모습이 우리와 너무 닮아있는 것 같다는 것을 어느 날 깨닫게 됐어요.
저 파도와 나 사이를 가로막고 있는 것은 얇은 유리막 하나인데 우리는 우리의 신념에 해당하는 이 얇은 유리막 하나를 믿고 오랜 시간 도망가지 않고 버텨 드디어 유리벽에 닿아 꿈을 부숴뜨릴 기회가 생겼죠.
무언가 한 분야에서 남들에게 두각을 나타내기까지는 남들이 모르는 무수히 많은 사름의 시간이 뒷받침되어야 하는 것입니다.
그리고 그 사름의 시간 동안 포기하지 않고 의연히 버티기 위해서는 본인이 하고자 하는 일에 대한 신념과 이 신념을 믿고 버틸 수 있는 용기가 필요해요.
파도는 부서지기 전이 가장 높다 라는 말이 있어요.
우리는 실감 콘텐츠가 세상을 바꿀 수 있는 충분한 수단이 될 수 있을 거라 믿고 두려웠지만 지난 십 년을 파도가 부서질 것이라 믿은 채 의연히 그 앞에 서 있었습니다.
저희의 이 지난한 여정과 파도 앞에 맞선 경험이 또 다른 빛나는 미래를 위해 꿈을 품고 이뤄갈 수 있는 공감의 메시지로 전해지길 희망합니다.

In the past, we started as a web agency creating websites, as various media technologies emerge, we expanded our business toward combining digital media and content in the spaces we inhabit.
The artwork you are currently viewing is the public media art piece called “Wave” which helped introduce the name “d’strict” to public. “Wave” is an attractive public art located on a large outdoor billboard in Samsung-dong, COEX. Since the art was available for public, it has been well-received by many people. On a flat screen bent like an ‘L’, using a 3D technique called anamorphic illusion, we presented a three-dimensional work. This 3D style gained global attention. It sparked a new wave of 3D videos.
In summer 2021, in NYC’s Times Square, we sequentially conducted two public art projects. You’re seeing Waterfall NYC, on Times Square’s tallest billboard, almost 102 meters high. It’s a public art showing a virtual waterfall. And now, Whale2, on Times Square’s largest horizontal screen, shows a water-made whale dancing on waves. It’s a public art of the whale dancing on water. It’s a public art piece representing this. To the people passing by it was inevitably exposed, giving it a nature of public goods. Considering its public nature, we thought it would be better to expose works that people would want to see. And by showing subjects found in nature, we hoped many citizens find comfort.
Due to the pandemic, exhausted people in the city with movement restrictions, our three public art projects have been resonated deeply and provided solace, gaining love from people worldwide. Besides these outdoor billboard public art projects, we are also using our created media art works in running galleries, like the immersive media art gallery you are seeing now, ARTE Museum, which is exactly that. Under the concept of Eternal Nature, it’s a space where various works that reinterpret materials and spaces in nature through media are exhibited, We currently operate three galleries: in Jeju, Yeosu, and Gangneung. Thankfully, ARTE Museum is also receiving a lot of love from the audience, since its opening in late September 2020, Jeju Arte Museum has already welcomed over 1.1 million visitors, and thousands of visitors come daily to Gangneung and Yeosu, turning them into representative hot spots of their regions.
The works of our company shown so far are realized through immersive content technology. Immersive content can be described as, content based on immersive media technology. Immersive media technology aims to reproduce real world as closely as possible, a next-generation media offering much superior expression and realism than current technologies. To put it more simply and intuitively, it’s a media technology that can offer people more realistic virtual experiences, such immersive content is commonly seen as a tool for merging technology and art, and is receiving a lot of attention. Our District also defines our company differently as ‘Art Tech Factory’, as we make a kind of art known as media art using immersive media technology making us a group that merges technology and art.
But the art commonly known as ‘Art’ is often perceived as traditional paintings and sculptures, can media art works based on immersive media be considered a genre of art? In other words, can media art be called art? To explain this, let’s first look at how past technological advancements have transformed art. Generally, art is heavily influenced by the thoughts of people living in that era and the changes in society. And the changes in thoughts and society are invariably influenced by technological advancements. Therefore, the advancement of technology inevitably impacts art. The most beloved Western art movement among Koreans is Impressionism. This Impressionism emerged with new technological developments. This Impressionism emerged with new technological developments.
Originally, painters faced the problem of their paints drying too quickly for coloring, preventing them from taking these paints outdoors for painting, and were mostly confined to painting indoors. But then, technology that allowed paint to be stored in tubes without drying emerged and with the Industrial Revolution, a new transportation, the train, appeared, enabling painters who were restricted to indoor painting to now take trains to the suburbs and use these non-drying tube paints to capture the vast landscapes of nature on their canvases. The invention of photography is also a prime example of how technological progress has brought changes in art. Before photography, painters were seen as craftsmen who could well represent scenes visible to the eye. But even the most precisely depicting painters couldn’t match the exactness captured by photographs. Thus, after the invention of photography, the style of art, which sought realistic visual representation, transformed into more abstract creations, embedding the artist’s thoughts and emotions.
The emergence of modern art movements like Cubism, Fauvism, and Surrealism in late 19th century, and the beginning of contemporary art in the 20th century, can also be seen as examples of technological changes influence art. like the example of picture. Each time a new technology emerges and old ones vanish, it triggers changes in people’s thoughts and societal lifestyles, bringing new transformations and, thus, art evolves and reaches people in new ways. In this context, I believe the emerging immersive content technology, is also influencing the art of our times, representing another new technological advancement. I view immersive media technology as, akin to humanity discovering photography as a new visual tool, a discovery of another tool for manipulating time representation, holding as much significance as the invention of photography.
Let’s take a look at a work currently being shown, an artwork named ‘Aurora’ exhibited by District at Arte Museum. This piece gives the experience of being in, a brightly shining Aurora in the night seas of Northern Europe, make feel as if one is actually there. Thus, immersive content is a means, that delivers more direct experiences to people, than any other form of artistic expression. Because of these features, it makes visual arts, more accessible and enjoyable for a broader audience, representing a new form of expression. Therefore, media art created through immersive media technology, may soon become a new genre representing contemporary art, loved by many people worldwide. And perhaps in a few more years, expressions through immersive media technology will develop even further, leading to even more realistic expressions and experiences, than what we’ve seen in the current videos.
People will soon be able to experience, virtual and real experiences almost indistinguishably. And this is not limited to a few offline examples you saw earlier, but will be further advanced in online experiences, through devices like virtual and augmented reality. Thus, people will be able to enjoy virtual experiences, at the same level as real ones, even sitting at home. Recently, in virtual spaces known as the metaverse, people are forming social relationships and conducting commerce, in ways similar to real-world interactions. This too is not a distant reality, where spaces are expressed at Pixar-like levels, but rather, a time is near when they will be rendered, almost indistinguishably from our real world. And the technology enabling all this, is none other than immersive media technology or immersive content.
I’ve introduced the significance of immersive content technology, and some of our company’s prominent works using it. Thankfully, our company’s recent activities, have been receiving attention from many people. Some see d’strict as a exceptional design company emerged like a comet. Now, I’d like to talk about the journey, my company and I have taken up to this point. The theme of this TEDx where I am currently speaking is “Sareuda”, which directly means to burn and eliminate, but also implies completely get rid of something. I feel the journey of my company, d’strict and I have taken, has many intersections with the word “Sareuda”. Let me share that story with you.
d’strict was founded in 2004, initially, d’strict designed websites for large corporations, and grown by more than 30% annually, became one of the most famous web agencies. in 2007, as an industrial trainee under a special military service program. I joined d’strict. Originally majoring in economics, passing the CPA exam during grad school, I started my first job as an accountant, and joined d’strict to complete my military service. Being a non-designer and joining the company for military service, I initially planned to return to the accounting firm after completing my duty. However, in June 2009, when my service ended, impressed by my colleagues’ work attitude and the potential growth of the digital content market, I decided not go back to accounting firm, and to stay at d’strict and explore a new career.
Since 2009, when I decided to stay, District shifted its business direction, to creating content using immersive media technology. it was ten years before public noticed the presence of term “immersive contents” We trusted our ability to create content, that could be integrated with the evolving digital media technologies, and boldly abandoned our stable web agency business an start a fresh challenge. We didn’t knew at that point, and that was the beginning of a challenging decade.
The video you are currently watching is of Live Park, the world’s first digital media park, introduced by d’strict in 2011. Including the current Arte Museum, it led to the emergence of many indoor media entertainment facilities worldwide. At the time, Live Park was an incredibly innovative venture, earning high praise and numerous awards. However, the concept of immersive media was too novel for the general public at that time, and without the help of SNS marketing like today, d’strict incurred a loss of 10bn won, leading to rapid financial difficulties. Despite these challenges, in 2015, we opened our second media entertainment facility, named Play K-Pop, featuring K-Pop stars’ hologram performances and augmented reality experiences.
This immersive entertainment facility was not targeting domestic tourist, but Chinese tourists who frequently visited Jeju. However, this also faced challenges due to the 2017 THAAD issue with China, and Chinese tourist didn’t visit Jeju as much any more. It leads to significant losses and facility was closed in 2019. To overcome these two major investment failures, we established a branch in China in 2017 to start local operations there, but we struggled to recollect promised payments from Chinese clients, worsening the company’s situation.
Followed by the founders’ request, I became the CEO in late 2016, leading d’strict through what were probably the most difficult years in both my life and the company’s history. Despite these hardships, d’strict, with its strong conviction, started another new venture from the second half of 2019, the Wave Arte Museum project I mentioned earlier.
Thankfully, our efforts finally paid off, with our creations receiving recognition not just domestically but internationally. This helped improve our financial situation recovering rapidly from the second half of 2020, and we have been on a significant growth trajectory since last year. The past decade or so of our journey seems to fit perfectly with the word ‘Sareuda’. Since 2009, when immersive media was still a novel concept, we have continually attempted innovative projects using this technology, often feeling like running away during major failures.
However, we persevered and stayed the course, often feeling like we were walking through a dark tunnel, guided only by the light of our potential. We spent (“Sareuda”) enormous amount of effort and time in order to go through the path and goal we wanted.
And also, the other wave artwork exhibited at Arte Museum we see now, reminds me of us, standing in front of this wave, I realized that we closely resemble the person standing before this wave. Between this wave and me, there’s only a thin glass barrier, in which we’ve placed our faith, representing our beliefs, we’ve stood our ground, not running away, for a long time, finally reaching the glass wall, we’ve found a chance to reach our dream.
To stand out in any field requires countless hours of hard work (“Sareuda”). And during those hours of hard work, in order one to persist confidently without giving up, one needs faith in what you do, and the courage to believe and persevere.
There’s a saying, ‘The wave is highest just before it breaks.’ We believed immersive content could be a powerful tool to change the world, despite our fears, we’ve stood steadfastly for the past decade, believing in the imminent breaking of the wave.
Our difficult journey and experiences facing the waves, I hope will resonate as a message of empathy, to nurture dreams for a brighter future.
