Thanks for that. Many interesting bits, but this stood out for me:
"Our results show that, among the 517 ChatGPT answers we labeled, 52% of them contain incorrect information, 78% are inconsistent from human answers, 35% lack comprehensiveness, and 77% contain redundant, irrelevant, or unnecessary information."

Stack Overflow is aimed at programmers / software developers.
What's the relevance of Stack Overflow for translators? How many translators write their own software?
Is there any empirically proven correlation between how good or bad is ChatGPT when used by programmers and when used by translators?
If nothing else you would expect ChatGPT to be way better with programming languages, as they have far more rigid rules than human languages.

More to the point, I stumbled few days ago on a interview with one the pioneers in AI. He basically said that currently AI is nothing more than a glorified "autocorrect" on steroids - no real "intelligence" whatsoever, so believing in the marketing hype around AI is just that - "believing". ▲ Collapse

ChatGPT is a huge advantage to :
- write menial, boring and/or repetitive code fast.
- get started with an API/new algorithm with comments, if and only if this API/algorithm is sufficiently documented.
- Find a bug or a logic flaw (you try your luck there, it won't get it always right, but when it does, you saved yourself half an hour).
However :

- Be careful what you wish for. It just will do what you ask it to do, not what's best for your project. When you code, these can be two completely different things.
- It's often wrong. Don't ask something you can't review.

This will never exist. Just like what you see on this forum with every article regarding AI, everybody sees the data the way they fantasize what they wish it was, but not for what it is.
Every project is completely different from one another, and the way one uses ChatGPT or any other tool is also completely different. What LLMs bring to the table depend on both.
ChatGPT could never have pioneered the Quake algorithm, but it sure could have helped implement it.

It really doesn't matter that much actually as far as natual language processors work.

Just like my first point. He's right, he's also not being really thorough and dare I say honest. He's right: AI is just a super clever and fast way to organize a coherent answer from loads of data. Is it intelligence? No it's not, and it won't become self conscient, at least not the way it's implemented today. Is it marketing and hype? No. It's a real progress for anyone who's honest and not rejecting it just because they see their market shrinking and don't know to/don't want to account for the change.
