Since they did not provide sufficient information about themselves and there is not enough information on their website, I asked them politely to send more details about their agency, such as agency name, address, phone, fax, etc., before I could send the test to them.
Here is what they answered this morning:
Dear candidate,
You do not need the details of the company to send us the free tests. The price is related to the big work of 600.000 words, for which we need to proof translators in order to chose the best.
If you are interested in working with us send us the test so that we see your translation level.
Regards,
No words for that.
Regards,

I had a similar experience. A potential \"customer\" send me a document that urgently needed translation. When I asked for more info (basic things like full name of company and address) so that I could prepare a written estimate for their approval (I always either do this or accept a written purchase order if the job is for an agency), they suddenly disappeared. Fortunately I hadn\'t yet started the work!

Regards and happy translating!

I think this is unacceptable for the agency to refuse to provide you with details. Even if it is just one \"broker\" acting alone, you really need to gather some basic details.
Paying or not paying for test translations is another issue, but I would stay clear of anyone who would not provide me with the most basic of details - especially before taking on a large project with them.
Good luck.

I\'d have been very suspicious about this sort of behaviour as well. What reason would they have to refuse to give you details?
We as freelancers have to \'vet\' agencies in the same way as we are vetted by them. An agency which fails to fulfil even these basic criteria should simply fail the vetting procedure!
You may have just had a lucky escape

Dear candidate,
You are kindly invited to work for free for whomever. Please, do not be surprised in the end if you find ourselves vanished with the result of your work and the price being zero, even for 600.000 words, since we are currently trying to figure out those idiots who would be willing to do this job.
If you are interested in working with us put the blame on youself, we couldn\'t care less about your translation level.

I was also contacted by an agency concerning a large automotive translation project, I think they mentioned around 600,000 words.
They sent me a test translation (12 pages!!!; unpaid), which they wanted to be done quickly with Trados. The best thing was the price they offered for the project: Euro 0.02/word (Trados no match).
I had a good laugh.....

Hi Sonja,
Their answer sounds incredibly rude to me.
I wouldn\'t even consider working with someone who treats their freelance translators (or anyone else for that matter) with such an absolute lack of respect.
As already pointed out by others, not wanting to give you their address also sounds very suspicious.
I would just forget about them.
Ciao,
Laura
