This thread is part of the Translator playground: a place for translators to have fun, to network, to learn, and to hone their translation or linguistic skills. See the announcement here.

Need a quick break from work? In this forum translators and language professionals can share quotes about translation, tongue twisters and word plays, translation challenges, etc.

All are welcome to participate and to add new items to this and the other areas of the Translator playground; have fun with it! If you need help or would like to propose an addition to the Translator playground, contact site staff through the online support system.

But surely wrong - I myself am extremely intolerant if I lack toast in the morning!

This is one of the best features of Google - it's so robust because it learns from the millions of typos it gets asked just the same as the real queries.

I've been missing toast the way we make it back home - with an overhead grill. These things are scarce as hen's teeth here in Spain...

Natural language development Oct 18, 2013

That is the way languages have been developing since the beginning of communication - but through the internet this process is amplified and accelerated to a point where those who still know orthography might have to start thinking about how those who don't might spell something, otherwise they won't find anything on the net anymore. I had to think a while about the lack of toast to find out what it meant. Scary...especially when doing research for translations. Imagine not only having to find the source language expression for a tiny, rather unknown technical component of any obscure machine and then to have to search it in 30 different spelling variants, hoping that one of them would fit the creative inventiveness of the overworked, underpaid orthographically challenged technical writer that has produced some source language material about it.Collapse

I didn't even have to type this.

I just typed "I didn......" and the computer knew what I was going to say.

What you are reading was written without any human intervention. So if there are any mistooks, don't blame me.

And this morning I had two slices of toasted organic wholemeal bread with butter. Mm-hmm !

Google knows a lot Oct 18, 2013

Just another day a local TV news reporter sent a gmail to the one sitting next to his desk, saying "I feel like having some Chinese food tonight". And sure enough, an ad for a local Chinese resaurant popped up. Google reads your emails!

Can lack toast and tolerant people eat eggcorns?

Those ads that keep popping up in on-line dictionaries:

"Have your text translated professionally"

or:

"Learn German in only 10 days"?
