I would like to ask someone experienced for a piece of advice. A translation agency is looking for tranlators of literature for a publishing house. They have sent me a sample (nr 2)of about 2500 words. It should be done for free, of course. I have some experience in literary translations, but the stories I translated were Russian. Anyway, they did not seem to be interested in my background at all. What do you think about such a situation? Maybe I am too suspicious...

that's not a sample... Mar 2, 2002

2500 words is a translation job and it should be payed.

Maybe you should give details about this \"sample\", like name of the file, how it begins and how it ends, etc.

Somebody told in these forums of a whole play sent in batches to different translators as \"translation tests\"; it seems probable that they are trying to have this translation done for free.

You are not too suspicious; there are a lot of \"horror stories\" of translators being taken advantage of.

Best regards,

There has been too much abuse by these agencies. You can never be too cautious.

As for tests, they should never exceed 150 to 200 words.

Good luck.

Don't do it. Mar 9, 2002

This question has come up in the past.

For tests, do 100 words, 200 words, maybe. Almost no experienced translator will recommend you do anything much longer. 2500 words is far to long for assessment purposes.
