Hello Colleagues,
Sorry in advance if this subject has been discussed before in Forums.
As we all know that most of us, as against to other professions, have advantage to create our own working atmosphere while we are doing our jobs.
So my question is about those working conditions:
Which conditions help you to increase your productivity, creativeness and to feel yourself more comfortable?

I like it quiet, ideally, but quite often there is noise from all directions, that I do not have any influence over. It used to be a lot quieter in an "official" office in the town.
That apart, I like an insect-free office ideally, but when chafers fly in through the window and land on the photocopier and there are millions of moths fluttering about this year....

My favourite working environment:
Two computers & three monitors (all mine! nobody touch!), a large cup of coffee (no snacks though), a huge bowl of water, a headset, and good music.
My back-up working environment (for when my office gets too crowded):
A nearby coffee shop, my laptop, and a USB modem (mobile internet access).

I like to work in a friendly environment, with well-regulated temperature, and good lighting.
If I'm working with other colleagues then I like to work with people who really love their work but see it as a hobby and a way of making money; that is, they are not obsessed by it.
And, most important, the best atmosphere to work in is where the colleagues are not obsessed about which bar they are going to go to that night and what party they are going to crash on the weeke... I love the flexibility of being a freelance translator!
About twice a week, I take my laptop to my favorite coffee shop and see if there's an armchair available in a back corner of the place (where no one can look over my shoulder and see what I'm working on).

Fortunately, their sound system plays mellow mid-20th century jazz, which isn't distracting. Plus they make a fantastic turkey-and-provolone sandwich.
I lived in that neighborhood for 18 years, so I get to take short breaks when old friends wander through. The shop has free wireless internet, so I can still consult my main online resources. If a project is particularly hard and my brain starts to fry, I can go to the nearby gym to do a half-hour of cardio, and then come back to the project. It works wonders.
I still work here at home three or four days a week. But the only jobs I really prefer doing here are those that require specialized paper dictionaries that are too heavy to carry around.

My clients are conditioned to communicate through e-mail, so they can reach me easily - I only ever get personal calls (with some telemarketing and fake lottery calls mixed in), so I can safely mute the phone.
Also, taking regular breaks away from the desk is a must. First of all, you need to get up and stretch once in a while (and this includes your eyes as well), second, doing something else for five minutes (going to the store to get milk, reading an article in a magazine, playing a bit with the cat, etc.) can refresh your concentration when you sit back down at the desk. ▲ Collapse

Ditto. However, after a while making espresso, I give up - it does take more effort than brown water. But I never touch the brown water. Whoever came up with that? Instead, when I'm too lazy to make espresso, I use instant columbian, which I can mix the way I like it, unlike brown water. If I want something strong, I can make it. And if I feel like super tasty coffee, I put a shot of Bailey's, Grand Marnier or scotch in the cup... mmm-mmm-mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Yes! Without a doubt - the flexibility ... that is the prime and most wonderful thing about this line of work. This morning I was able to go shoping, help my wife with our son who has a cold, wrap up after two days of intense translating, and set the stage for the next batch of intense work.
I should try the WIFI coffeehouse corner bit too; it sounds like a really great way of changing the atmosphere and not being locked in all the time.
