Hi everyone,
This is Prerna and I have recently moved to Australia from India. As an accredited Interpreter I was wondering how much I should charge per hour for both telephone and on-site interpreting for freelance work. Any relevant comparisons with other developed countries would be useful. I interpret between EnglishHindi/urdu/Punjabi but average rates for any languages would be helpful.

Hi Prerna, I am not an interpreter and I do hope some interpreters reply to your query, but I think you will find that a lot of interpreting work in Australia is for government agencies, hospitals, centrelink etc. and generally there is not much variation in rates, i.e. the agency or customer will tell you what they are going to pay you. Thanks for your reply. I agree with you. I was wondering what might be the average rate whether for telephone interpreting or onsite interpreting, as i was recently contacted by this private agency and they asked for my best rate and since I am new to this profession, I was wondering what do normally NAATI accredited Interpreters charge in Australia.
Any figure would be helpful.

I would like to add a few comments to Patricia's message.
Government agencies and Centrelink work is available only for Australia permanent residents and Australian citizens. If you have just arrived, this might not be your case yet. If you are eligible to work with Centerlink, I know the pay is not very high and depends on your level of accreditation (64 AUD/hour for Professional Interpreters).

However, if you are not a permanent resident or Oz citizen you can register with Interpreting agencies. Agencies focusing on Community Interpreting will offer you the same missions as Centerlink in hospitals, Courts etc...you will just earn less (around 50 AUD/hour), because they act as an intermediate. Depending on where you live, you might find agencies focusing on a more business type of Interpreting, where the pay is generally better.
The best thing I suppose (in terms of pay) is to find your own direct clients, if you have enough time and energy to look for them.
I couldn't really find information about the rates, but maybe someone will!

An established and reputable agency usually tells you how much it pays interpreters instead of asking for your best rate.
If you are approached by a private client, then you can use this agency's rates as a guide as well.
