Good morning,

I'll be relocating to Australia next year but am planning to keep my UK bank account up and running for my European customers. I'd need to be able to access my UK account from Australia, preferably online, to transfer money to my Australian account on a weekly or at least monthly basis.

Good morning,

I'll be relocating to Australia next year but am planning to keep my UK bank account up and running for my European customers. I'd need to be able to access my UK account from Australia, preferably online, to transfer money to my Australian account on a weekly or at least monthly basis.

According to my bank I would need to appear in my local UK branch in person each time I want to transfer money to Oz, so this is not an option. I found some bank accounts that offer international services but require x amount of savings or an exorbitant annual income to go through the account, so those are not an option either. I could just ask every client to pay me via Paypal, but that's not ideal either, as many prefer bank transfers to a European bank account.

Does anyone have any suggestions, perhaps from personal experience?

Many thanks in advance.

Personal or business account? Jul 13, 2009

Hi Nicole,
Is it a personal or business acount?
I've been doing this with my ordinary personal account (I don't have a UK business account) from France for about the last 10 years, and have never had any problems. I send a signed request by fax or as a scanned document and it always works perfectly.
I have done this with both Natwest and Lloyds TSB.
I'm sure I could set up a facility to transfer money directly on-line if I wanted to (as I do with my French accounts)

It may be that the rules are different with a business account though, I'm afraid I don't have any experience of that. I have noticed though that it's very difficult to set up a standard UK account once you're abroad (I wanted to change banks last year and it was a nightmare!), so I'd definitely advise getting it all set up before you leave.

PayPal Jul 13, 2009

Hi Nicole,
You can set up two PayPal accounts. One connected to bank account in UK and second one connected to bank account in Australia. It is easy to send money from one PayPal account to another.

Maciej

UK bank accounts Jul 13, 2009

Hi Nicole, how are you?

We have online access to our UK Lloyds TSB account but transferring money online to our bank in Australia is not an option. There are forms to fill in that have to be signed by both of us as it is a joint account. Whether they would accept the forms faxed or scanned I don't know, as I haven't tried it yet. An easier option for you would perhaps be just to use your UK debit/credit card to access the money here, either by using it to pay for items in Australia or by withdrawing cash at regular intervals. Not as convenient as online banking of course. I wonder if you could make some sort of standing order, so that they transfer X amount above a certain balance on the first of the month or something. Of course the banks always charge huge amounts for foreign transfers, so you'd need to look into those charges as well.

Best regards
Patricia

not with UK bank Jul 13, 2009

I'm fairly sure you can't make online payments from a UK bank account online. I had to do it once when abroad, and had to send a letter with my signature (I don't think they even accepted fax/scanned documents, although maybe I didn't try). They also charged about 10 GBP or something, so it's not something I would want to do regularly. They might not all charge as much, but I think are money-laundering regulations requiring a signature.

I can however do it with my Spanish bank account, I believe, although I haven't done so, but there is an option in my online transfer section, and I know several other European countries allow this.

Fax mandate/UKForex Jul 13, 2009

Hi,

I relocated from the UK to Australia earlier this year and had the same problem.

When I need to transfer money I can now fax instructions to my UK bank to transfer money from my account to UKForex who in turn will arrange for the transfer to my account here in Australia.

To set up the fax mandate you need to go to your local branch in person and fill in a form but it was straight forward with my bank. The instructions to UKForex are done via web/phone.

Hope this helps,

This may help Jul 13, 2009

Hi Nicole,
I live in Brazil but have kept a bank account in the USA. When I want to transfer money from that account to my Brazilian account, I use Xoom (www.xoom.com). Since I use my bank account rather than PayPal to send the money, they don't even charge me a fee. You might want to check it out.

I believe that Halifax now offers international online transfers.

A card? Jul 13, 2009

How about a simple debit card to withdraw your money from Australia?

Thank you for all your replies. I'll certainly look into some of the options mentioned. Xoom and Halifax look particularly interesting.

Australian Bank Account Jul 13, 2009

I have most of my clients wire money directly into my Australian Bank Account, and I ask those who are reluctant to use Moneybookers, which is cheaper than Paypal.

HSBC? Jul 13, 2009

I've heard that HSBC offer online cross-border transfers originating from the UK. (Although it's possible that this option applies only to their 'premier' accounts. I've been meaning to research this myself, as it's one of my eternal bugbears...)

International banks Jul 24, 2009

I agree with previous postings that international banks might be a good solution. Citibank, for instance does not charge transaction fees for international money transfers from branch to branch. It works between Germany and Australia.

Paypal. Aug 12, 2009

I use paypal mostly to do this, though there is a waiting period for transfer of monies from 3 to 5 working days.

I did ask at my Australian bank (NAB) and they set me up for online international banking. HOWEVER, no matter whether I do the transaction online or in the bank itself, the charge is AUD$30. Irritating really. Still, if you need to, you can do it that way.
