Hi

I am about to apply for the assessment of my Russian University degree in Interpreting and Translation Studies. Does anyone know what NAATI criteria are? I've checked their website, and it does not give any clear indication, only general facts. It would be very helpful if they at least provided the number of hours required and types of subjects.

Thank you in advance for your help!!

Daria

NAATI Assessment of Overseas Qualifications Jul 31, 2009

Hello Daria,

I think you will find that it is quite difficult to get overseas qualifications recognised by NAATI as they do not recognise a lot of courses unless the content and structure is almost identical to the very few courses that they approve in Australia. So perhaps you should look at what courses they approve at tertiary level in Australia and see if the content is similar to your course.

Despite the fact that your tertiary qualifications are superior to the level demanded in the NAATI test you may find that you would still be required to do the test. As you have tertiary qualifications in T&I I don't think you would find the test difficult at all but it is annoying to have to pay the money for it when you are perfectly well qualified already. You should be aware that NAATI accreditation is mainly required for the translation of documents for the authorities here (govt. depts., immigration, courts etc.) but is not necessary in order to translate documents in the business and private sector. Agencies here may prefer you to have it but if you have good qualifications and experience they will generally take that into account too. You will no doubt get some advice from other colleagues who have gone through the same experience but I have heard of a great many cases where very highly qualified people with degrees from overseas universities have not had their qualifications recognised by NAATI and have had to pay and sit the test. You have to ask yourself whether it is worth it in the long run. If you work mainly for overseas customers you wouldn't necessarily need it, but if you want to get a lot of local work (translating immigration documents, for example), it would be worth pursuing.
Hope this helps.
Patricia

PS. I see you are in Adelaide. Have you met up with the local branch of AUSIT there - a great bunch of people. Contact me privately if you want some contact details.

Thank you, Patricia Jul 31, 2009

Thank you so much. That is the most indepth answer I've received so far!
Extremely helpful!
I do wish to work for immigration authorities in the nearest future, so I think I should apply. I'll give the NAATI office a call and ask them what Australian courses they approve.

Warm regards,

Daria

List of acceptable os qualifications Jul 31, 2009

NAATI used to have a list of acceptable OS qualifications. I am not sure if they still have it today. The good news (if you can call it) is that you can now sit for NAATI test at anytime from 1 July.

list Jul 31, 2009

At some point, there used to be a list on the NAATI website of foreign institutions whose degrees were automatically recognised by NAATI...and there were not many of them. In fact I was surprised to see how few French programs were recognised.

I couldn't find the list today, but many things have disapeared from the NAATI website recently...

Good luck!

It's still there, if you Google. Aug 1, 2009

For Overseas Qualifications Information (2007) see: http://www.naati.com.au/pdf/publications/Manual%20for%20Candidates%202007%20text.pdf 2.4.2 p34 (List of approved qualifications by country)

Just wanted to thank everyone who responded to my SOS.

It sounds like sitting the test will be a lot less time-consuming, and cheaper, of course. The reason I want to have my degree assessed in Australia, is to find out what it is worth here. I've been told that there is a separate organisation that conducts assessment of any overseas qualifications, it's called VETASSESS.
I will most probably be going there, but after the test.

My previous contact with NAATI regarding my degree wasn't very satisfying. About a year ago I asked them if I could apply for the assessment with an incomplete degree, but 4 years of studying which was more than the standard Bachelor degree here, and they said yes. When I posted my application to them, and had paid a lot of money to have my uni transcripts translated into English, they sent it back to me, saying that I was inelligible due to incomplete degree...

Your answers have helped me revise my strategy. Thank you

Hi again Daria, it's not VETASSESS you need, I think that's just for vocational qualifiations, you probably need to go to NOOSR at the following link:

Hope this helps and good luck whatever you decide to do. I think it would be best to try and get some information from NAATI about whether they are likely to recognise your degree before you go to the bother and expense of submitting an application. You have to be persistent!
