Well, I think I read all the posts about pricing and I'm still confused. If we're talking about translation only, what's better? Per minute? Per word? Per subtitle? And what's the going rate?

For you, as a translator, it's per subtitle. Because it's really proportional to the amount of work. I don't think you would be paid per word. There no such thing as a general rate in our field. Depends on clients, types of program and... countries. | | | Michal Panner (X) Spojené státy americké Local time: 23:43 angličtina -> hebrejština + ... AUTOR TÉMATU

Why do you think "for me as a translator" it's per subtitle and that I wouldn't be paid per word? Do you know something about my pay I don't? | | | Niina Lahokoski Finsko Local time: 06:43 Člen (2008) angličtina -> finština + ... Per subtitle | Feb 15, 2007 |
I think Sylvano meant, that for you (as a translator) it would be better to charge by subtitle than per minute, because the amount of text can vary very much. In subtitling a per word rate is generally not used, or so I have understood. The rates offered are in my experience quite ridiculous. I was just offered less than 3 euros per program minute for subtitling (and 4 cents per source word for regular translation). I no longer wonder why the DVD subtitles in my language seem to be ... It's better to be paid per subtitle. To Niina : yes, less than 3 USD per minute is... appalling. If you ask me, 5 USD is not very good either, though I know it seems to be a very common rate in the US. We seldom go that low in France. For the time being, mind you... | | | Michal Panner (X) Spojené státy americké Local time: 23:43 angličtina -> hebrejština + ... AUTOR TÉMATU
sorry for misunderstanding you, sylvano. and thank you both for the info | | | Flora Perez Španělsko Local time: 05:43 angličtina -> španělština + ... SUBITLING "FAIR" RATES | Sep 1, 2007 |
Hi all, It SHOULD be minimun: TRANSLATION: - 4€/minute - 0,25-0,30 per subtitle. Editing and cueing: Same rate, so that if you do both, it's 8€/minute or 0,50-0,60/subtitle. Pero subtitle is the fairest. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » [Subtitling Rates] Translation for Subtitling: Pricing.
