Article 1 (Purpose)

Jeongdong Theater in Seoul on the 6th. The basement performance hall was filled to capacity for the stage production of Omoni, written and directed by Yun-Taek Lee. The 320 or so seats had already been fully reserved the day before, and around thirty playgoers with standing-room tickets found themselves sitting on the stairs. Over eight days since the premiere, around 3,000 people have made it out to Jeongdong Theater, and this includes many eminent members of society, including Chief Presidential Secretary Joon-Gweon Kim and Minister of Education Hae-Chan Lee.
Omoni was written by leading director Yun-Taek Lee, who modeled the story on his own elderly mother. The main character Du-Ri Hwang, who was married off as if she were being sold for three majigi (meaning: a unit of measuring farmland in Korea) of rice field, supported her crippled mother-in-law for her playboy husband and raised one son and two daughters. This illiterate mother earned money going around from place to place reselling clothes she had bought in the market. Hwang watched over her family with a strong will and tenacious vitality. She represents strong Koreans who have not given up hope even in the midst of despair and is a symbol of a traditional mother who displays both sacrifice and patience.
Byeong-Yeon Moon (34 years old, housewife) expressed, “It is a quiet, but moving work. I would like to have my daughter, who is attending middle school, see it.” The crafty performance by Hak-Cheol Kim as the son is also a sight to behold. And when the main character Sook Son (Mother) goes on with her stories, saying, “When I showed up at Dongdaemun Market, even Jeong-Jae Lee, the top fighter at the time, couldn’t mess with me,” there was uproarious laughter.
Director Yun-Taek Lee gets full credit for having elevated this motherly myth that could have been no more than an individual’s emotional story into one that connects with our common humanity. Lee explained, “Nobody believes in the father’s perspective anymore. The sense of millennial despair that the paternal ideology can no longer save humanity has gone full circle back to womb of the mother, which is even more fundamental.”
Forty percent of those attending the play are in their 20s and 30s. Theater Head Sa-Jong Hong shared, “Expectations that the theater would be filled with middle-aged attendees were wrong. We are also getting lots of inquiries from organizations that want to watch as a group.” Min-Sik Joo (28 years old, office worker) said, “I came to the theater one hour early in order to take in an exhibit of illustrated poems based on a ‘mother’ theme. According to definitions by the European Central Bank (ECB), the US Department of the Treasury, and the European Banking Authority, virtual currency is a type of digital currency outside government control that is issued and managed by its developer and used in-common only within a specific virtual community. Under this definition, most cryptocurrencies are digital currencies that are also virtual currencies.
However, Bitcoin is accepted for payment on many online stores—and even offline stores; it is a digital currency but not a virtual currency. Also, from an issuance standpoint, most cryptocurrencies are not issued by a developer; therefore, they are not virtual currencies.
The US Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) uses the term virtual currency to mean “a means of exchange that functions as a currency in some circumstances but does not possess all of the characteristics of a real currency”. Thus, FinCEN does not use the word virtual currency for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, and others, except in cases of electronic gift certificates.
