I know there have been a couple of threads on this topic, but they do not seem to have helped me very much... I have just done my first proofreading job in years and I am being offered more. Can anyone recommend a PDF annotation / correction application or programme that would allow me to add in the standard proof-reading marks where necessary in the PDF, both where the mistake is and in the margin, as is the norm. I know about Adobe Acrobat, but it is very expensive and unless I get a lot more work, I cannot justify it.

I would welcome any recommendations!

Latest version of free Reader Jun 26, 2014

Version XI, the latest one, I believe, has it all in there, for free. Just use "comments".

I don't find them very intuitive and I sometimes waste time just doing simple things. I keep meaning to view the tutorials but I always put it off until "mañana". But it works pretty well.

Or are you talking of scanned PDFs specifically?

Acrobat XI Jun 26, 2014

Hi Sheila,

So Acrobat has all the standard (BSI) proof reading marks and a way to put them both into the text and in the margin?

By scanned PDFs do you mean like my scanned in corrections, where it is an image? In which case, I believe the original documents I get are Word documents converted into PDFs, so I would imagine far more 'editable'.

Actual proofreading marks? Jun 26, 2014

I didn't realise you were looking for them. What Acrobat Reader XI does is mirror (to some extent) what's available in MS-Word's "Track Changes" + "Comments" functions. You can select text for deletion, or move and edit it; you can place the cursor and insert additional text; you can highlight text and you can add comments. It creates its own list in the margin that can be shown or hidden, or filtered to show various things. There's also version control etc. I'm not fully up to speed by any mean... See more

I've never thought the old proofreading marks ever applied to electronic texts. But there certainly was a difficult time when you couldn't do anything at all to a PDF; then a bit later all you could do was stick "post-its" close to the error. Now it seems much more powerful and my clients seem happy. I marked up over 200 pages a while back, with many thousands of changes/comments. I'm not entirely sure what happened at their end, but they didn't complain so I imagine they were able to simply accept most of them very quickly.

Sorry, edited to answer your question: I believe all of this only works when you can actually select the PDF text i.e. not when it is in fact nothing more than an image.
