I have been working for years for one single client, and all I needed to do my job was a word processor.
Today, I am trying to approach new clients and I realise that the rules have changed. Agency talk about localisation, DTP... I am being asked all the time if I use Trados, Déjà vu...

The first thing I\'d say is: don\'t panic. Not everything that sounds revolutionary actually is really dreadfully, utterly new. Having said that, jumping from \"word processor only\" to computer-assisted tools is quite a bit of a chunk to swallow.
Where to start? The first thing to look at is probably your hardware - although most state-of-the-art tools can run on a 133MHz machine with 32 or 64MB RAM, this gets tedious... 300MHz and 128MB are better to get you going.

As far as standard office software is concerned, I have so far refused to upgrade to Office 2000 (let alone XP...) - my Office97 package seems to do the job just nicely.
Looking at computer-aided tools, you will probably find various legions of fans preferring one or the other - I\'m a Trados addict, so I won\'t comment; have a look at the CAT forum on this site, probably also at translationzone.com (be aware that this \'community\' is operated by Trados - that said, they do not seem to censor critical voices.
Your best bet is probably to get demo versions of Trados, SDLX, Déjà vu, etc. etc. and sit down for a week trying out what you feel most comfortable with. Add some experience by others, and take a decision - IMHO you should not shy away from spending some money on proper training. If there is a trade fair near you, try and get a live demo.
If you give us some more background on what you do (e.g. your area(s) of specialisation, experience, etc.), we could certainly be more specific in pointing out various things. AFAIC I can offer experience in the business/financial segment, DE-EN/EN-DE.
