Why not? It’s more stressful when you don’t speak the local language. I suppose It can become a very frustrating experience…

Can I what? Jul 18

Perplexed by the question in the title. My Gosh, can I relax? I’ll come back later to reread the title to make sure I’m not dreaming, hah.

Well... Jul 18

I like vacationing where broken English is spoken. Than i say to me "My English is better."

I reckon I'd mainly only have problems relaxing in countries where e.g. Russian, Hebrew, US English are spoken, though only one of those is among my source languages.

But my main source language is German - and absolutely no problems there.

Degrees of 'un-relaxation' 00:39

It certainly does help when you can directly read or listen to the local language.

But there are degrees of 'un-relaxation' a local language can create for you.

For me Serbian / French / English are 'home turf', no problems.

Outside of that, languages from the same families or using Latin or Cyrillic scripts are not too bad - at least I can recognise names or reproduce the text and look for a translation.

But an unknown language using a script I don't know - that becomes a royal pain in the neck!

Having said that, the ease or difficulty in using the local language is ONLY ONE OF MANY factors that would 'relax/un-relax you', and probably not one that should be seen as that important.

There was one case when I had no problem at all with the local language, but still had good reasons to be 'un-relaxed'. I had a free afternoon and wanted to take a walk in the town. When passing in front of the hotel reception, they asked me 'Where are you going? You don't want to be wandering alone in this town, even in broad daylight'. I still went out, only to have another local asking me the same question right in front of the hotel. When barely a minute later a third local asked me the same question, I decided that staying in the hotel is after all not that boring. When I took a look at a local newspaper I realised it was not empty talk at all. I was not on vacation, but I know people who found themselves in similar situations while on vacation – with or without language barriers.

How about target language? 00:39

I am surprised that so many people chose "It boosts my passion."
I wonder if they feel like reviewing everything they see in countries where their target language is spoken.

I live in the country where my source language is spoken.

And I have no difficulty relaxing (at least, not for that reason).
