I would add early education in mother-tongue schooling. During the colonial period, some indigenous languages managed to survive despite the imposition of the dominant language and, in a relatively recent case that I am familiar with in Cape Verde, the ban on pupils at a Portuguese school of speaking Creole (Kabuverdianu) even during break time.

I live in an Italian region where the main 'indigenous' language is an Austrian-Bavarian dialect with dozens of variants. If this language were not spoken in everyday life, it would die out, as all languages do when no one speaks them anymore. You can preserve part of a language through registrations and written documents, but this will never preserve the entire living language with its rich world of words and sounds. IMO, even teaching it at school is only helpful when it were also spoken outside of institutions, but it also implies the risk of preserving only one - the taught - variant.Collapse

Keeping them alive Aug 30

On most reservations of the American indigenous nations classes are being held for the adults and for any guests who might be interested in learning more about them. Their native language is also being taught in schools. So are their legends and traditions. All it takes to prevent the extinction of anything native is to simply live it.

Preserve, or save? Aug 31

I don't think the question setter really meant "preserve". These flies are "preserved", but they've been dead for over 40 million years.

The best way of preserving indigenous languages in that sense is probably by immortalising them in digital archives, as some of the alternative answers suggest.

But if nobody speaks a language any more, that language is dead.
